Whoever thought up that wet belt needs flogging with all the broken ones!

Such a stupid idea.

Don't forget,it probably saved £3 over the chain arrangement. That's the way the corporate world works.

Maybe, but it cost a lot money to redesign a perfectly good reliable system into a shit unreliable one!

That is something I cannot comprehend.

Although I don't think that engine should have been fitted to the mk4 in the first place.

I had some Convers+ mods installed yesterday. https://www.conversmod.de/index.php?page=conversmod

For those unaware, Convers+ is the instrument cluster in some Fords, and a clever Russian fella wrote some new code and all that, to introduce previously unavailable features.

He now works for Ford, so safe to say I am not the only one impressed by the seamless and undetectable integration.

You purchase and install (or have a ‘team member’ do that for you - as I did) the Base Pack, first.

Consisting of;

Visual PDC (very handy and should have been standard, as it is on most cars)

PTC heater display

Gear indication and gearbox oil temp - if you own an auto.

On top of that, I opted for;

TPMS

Digispeed

Boost indicator

DPF regen indicator

Auto activation of PDC at low speed

Additional gauges

Colour themes

Alternative logo

So mine never came with TPMS, but I have learnt it is fairly reliable, and this patch version is better again, and does not require the additional aerials fitting.

So I’ll have the valves changed when I need tyres - for now I have 4 errror messages every time I start the car.

Digispeed is a great feature in VAG stuff that I have driven (I guess most stuff has it), and now so do I.

I have only done around 80 miles since install, but it is very good and is better positioned that the speedometer.

It is also more accurate, according to GPS. Surely it doesn’t get a GPS signal?

The boost gauge is just cos, really. It flashes red and pegs at 2 BAR.

DPF regen is just to give me a better idea when the car is doing what it does, as IMO it seems to regen a lot.

I bet I don’t notice some of it. I’d like to keep an eye on that. Why not?

Auto PDC is handy, as I often find myself turning the PDC on when squeezing through small gaps and the like.

Supposedly newer stuff does this, anyway.

Additional gauges are just battery voltage - mine is not long for this world - and engine temp.

They were required to have the boost gauge.

The colour themes, I thought I’d get them to see if there is anything I prefer more than the standard ‘Dark’.

There isn’t. So they won’t be seeing much action.

Alternative logo just replaces the Ford Convers+ start up/standby screen.

I wasn’t going to bother changing it, but I saw they had a FL TXS Lunar Sky estate with even the earlier roof rails like I fitted, so I thought I may as well.

It was from the free gallery.

The first pic is how the Convers+ looked before the mod was installed.

The second is the start up/standby screen, you can see the battery voltage and coolant temp along the bottom.

The third shows the PDC display. I like how after the audible tone goes steady, the display lets you keep going, and then warns you with an exclamation mark when you are a few inches away, as opposed to like a foot.

The fourth shows the TPMS (with no sensors) and the boost gauge replacing the factory coolant temp gauge (now found along the bottom, replacing the full, half empty info below the fuel gauge).

As well as the digispeed.

In the fifth, you can see the ‘drivers door open etc’ message is now replaced by a more Mondeoy looking car display, and the actual doors open now.

Plus the factory temperature gauge is back.

The sixth shows one of the four warning messages I currently have.

The seventh shows the new ‘Advanced’ menu found in the factory Settings menu.

All of this stuff can be toggled on/off via the menu, and if you didn’t know it wasn’t meant to be there you would be none the wiser.

Just how I like it, and I reckon most of these will be worthy additions.

Gave my mk4 a brake service this week.

New discs and pads all round.

Old ones were clearly past their best.

Nice shiney new ones came from a local motorfactors,Comline brand.

Hope they are of decent enough quality.

A look online suggests they are.

Time will tell.

I put the Comline ones on the back of my old one and the front of my dads one.

They’re ideal. Nice coating to stop them rusting, also.

That's good to know,I guessed they would be of a reasonable quality.

Thanks.

I haven't them fully bedded in yet.

Not putting so many miles on it at the moment.

Planning a trip to the UK next month though,so that was a deciding factor to replace them, before the old pads were fully worn out.

Two new tyres needed next, then hopefully we are good to go.

Have I just seen a Mk4 in the latest Travelodge advert?

Not much to report from my mk4,

I've just returned from a two week jaunt to the north Norfolk coast,I live in the mid-west region of southern Ireland,so quite a reasonable distance, the Mondeo took it all in it's stride, despite being well loaded and 3 up.

It did the journey using just a smidge over a half tank of diesel.

Very pleased with that.

I had noticed a bit of distortion from one of the front speakers,so a trip to my mates scrap yard got me a pair of upgraded ones from a titanium x.

They have made an improvement.

Old and new,

Replacement is the shiny one.

Next job, will be an oil and filter change.

Fancy one of these, they seem a solid old beast compared to the Mk3. Think I’ll make the jump when they’re sub thousand quid. Seen a few 1.6 but I think it would be much in the flavour of the old Sierra 1.3. The 1.6 is plenty powerful enough in the Focus but I think it’d struggle in the Mondeo.

Not many petrols about, thinking on I’d probably get the 1.8TD. I’ve heard it’s more reliable than the 2.0 if a little agricultural.

I got the same speakers from a Fiesta ST for my Mazda 2. Much better though I think the head unit is heavily equalised for the awful stock speakers.

You heard wrong, the 2.0 is leagues ahead.

Have a look through this guys videos,

He's talking out of his arse. Yes the 1.8 does eat DMFs but you can change them to solid if the car has a 5 speed box.

Changing the wet belt to chain is a straightforward job.

The engine he's showing in the video IS NOT the Peugeot HDi engine, it's the later, smoother unit that has the inherent sensor and DPF issues.

10,000 miles is shit for front pads.

The ECU is in a plastic box, mine was run without an arch liner with no fucking problems.

Lower arm bushes DON'T last forever!

Oohhh! 300,000 miles! Fucking low mileage.

I'd still be running a Mk4 Mondeo if I hadn't gambled on the wet belt being changed.

I would agree that the 2.0 is the best diesel, but that man is so irritating I couldn't get past the first minute of his video.

Which 2.0 diesel? The 07 to 59 plate Peugeot or the later 60 to 64 plate? They're totally different engines.

The Peugeot.

A rough but durable unit.

In my experience, some are quicker than others though.

I thought that at first too,but there is some interesting content one you get beyond that.

The Econetic ones only gave 115hp,as opposed to 140 for the standard ones.

2.0 TDCi 140 would be my recommendation. They’re rock solid IME.
I put about 45K on one, and my father still has one that he has added about 30K to. Both without issue.
(I had to jetwash the DPF out on mine and Mr Muscle the turbo when the vanes got stuck, and both have had the DPF sensor pipes replaced.)

I bought this 2.2 TDCi 200 BHP on 97K, and 8 months later it’s on 107K, but if it ever comes up in conversation, people are surprised.

The mk4 and in particular the 4.5 wears miles and age extremely well IMO.

The MPG has increased a load, too. It was averaging 32/33, but now is usually 40/41.

I still recommend the 2.0 though, if you don’t care about extra oomph the 2.2 offers.

Mk4's/5's don't do it for me generally.

But by fuck, a well specced estate changes things somewhat.

Forgot to say, both the 2.0’s in question were already high mileage. Mine was 136K or so and his about 120.

Added new oil and we're ready to go.

Ford says it should be 5.5 litres, but 5 brings it up to the full mark on the dipstick!

The first time I did an oil change I did put in the recommended amount and it was way over the full mark.

So 5 it's been for the rest and it's been absolutely fine.

Hopefully we will be good to go for another few thousand miles.

It's great to have a car you can just sling the 5 litres in without any messing about measuring it out.

So I need to pick the autoshite hive mind, I’ve been to look at a Mk4 Mondeo today, a 2.2 TDCi, the car is in really beautiful condition and it’s cheap, however, despite the seller describing it as 'drives perfectly' when I got there he was quite immediately upfront about the fact if you go over 3k rpm it goes into limp mode. That and the radio doesn’t work, less worried about the radio.

Sure enough he took me out on a test drive and like clockwork, go above 3k, engine malfunction comes on the dash and it goes into limp mode. He was fairly certain it’s the EGR valve but what say ye?

It also, despite having full ford history didn’t appear to have any invoices for the cam belt being done and it’s on 156k miles. Nor any receipts for a clutch or flywheel.

My head is saying give it a miss, but my heart really, really likes the condition it’s in. I’ve never seen one this good and I’ve looked at quite a few dogs with less mileage.

Could it be chain driven?

I'd give it a swerve with that limp home issue, especially if they described it as 'drives perfectly'.
