Spotted a saloon in a carpark yesterday. Like a Vectra C it looked identical but stretched at the rear. I use to prefer saloons over hatches (carina e/avensis, cav, sierra etc) but nowadays it looks odd. Is that just me?

I used to in almost every car, but it’s a rare thing these days and is very pointless, really.

I think they look odd because the batches tend to have a longer boot, and can look very saloon like, anyway?

These are becoming prime sub £1500 chord these days. Good buy so long as you sling it when it starts giving diesel related trouble.

You get very little trouble from these. They’re no mk3.

The mk3 diesel could be a right nightmare when it got a few years on its back. It was almost as if that flashing glow plug light meant it was a sign to scrap the fucker immediately.

Yeah. Plus failing DMF’s and starter motors. Fun*

My FL Ghia X was a great car, mind!

For every one of those there’s a hatch Insignia, Mondeo etc imo

2008, I think. I was considering one about 2 years ago, but they were already too old for me ( 6 years, initial plate)

The newest one on Autotrader at the moment was registered September 2008, so might just slip in to areas with a 10 year limit.

Edited to add: that 2011 posted by Aston Martin is actually a hatch, about half of the "saloons" advertised are in fact hatchbacks !

That's tasty! Pity I'm not allowed rear privacy glass. LPG petrol would be the best of both worlds.

I was talking to a bloke last week who had to spend £1500 swapping the windows in a Vito thing, because of that rule- thanks John Worboys and the Rochdale massive.

Although that Mondeo is probably just film. ( but not a saloon)

Random facts, the Mk4 saloon is actually the longest of the three body styles. Also the Mk5 Hybrid is the only saloon you can buy now, as it's really a US Fusion model.

So the wheels are meant to be diamond cut on the triangles at the end of the spokes, but mine had been refurbished before in 100% silver powder coat.

Turns out I couldn’t have mine re-machined, due to there not being enough material to play with.

So after looking into prices, I bought four new wheels from Ford and have sold the originals.

Had my Rainsport 3’s transferred over, this afternoon.

A subtle difference, but they match well with the roof rails, window surrounds, exhausts etc and class the joint up a bit IMO, now it is looking as it should.

Well, this weekend was the first weekend out using it what I bought it for, towing the caravan. And I’m happy to report that it is bloody brilliant at it. So much more stable and composed than any other tow cars I’ve had (mk3 Mondeo and a mk3 Granada mainly). The caravan doesn’t wag the back of the car around anywhere near as much as the Granada in particular.

Despite only being the 2.0 140bhp derv it handled it effortlesssly, my caravan is 17ft and 1400kg (probably significantly more when It’s loaded with a weekends worth of booze for 3 adults but sshh, don’t tell vosa) so it’s no featherweight, but the trusty Mondeo was completely unphased and still averaged nearly 30mpg.

Could not be happier with it.

The pre 2010 2.0 HDi based unit has quite a lot more low end grunt than the revvy replacement fitted from 2010 onwards in the Mk4b.

Random Mondeo post;

I was sitting next to a 66 plate Vignale estate this morning and the wheels were fucked. Proper scabby, lifting laquer and white powdery bits. Haven't seen a Ford alloy looking that bad for years, although admittedly the rest of the car didn't look as if it had ever been cleaned, but 2 years is a bit soon.

Posted

I don't know what the wheel style on the vignale but Ford need to drop their obsession with 'diamond cut' finishes, because they're all fucked after 5 minutes.

Also its probably spent its life being cleaned at hand car washes, using the strongest acid known to man for cleaning them.

Decided to try some spacers. 25mm all round, just to get the wheels sitting flush in the arches.

I like it, but it now looks like it could do with a little drop.

Just picked it up from the remappers, also. Very pleased, drives great, with a nice power curve and more torque than expected.

The tuner said it was very willing and gave those numbers without them needing to push it.

I said I wouldn’t modify this much, but a little bit here and there never hurts...

Dayum, dems some nice tork gains

I am off with the caravan again this weekend to Classic Ford at Santa Pod.  I was gonna tow it there with the Mk2 Granada, cos y'know, get involved in the proceedings n that....but sod it.  I'm taking the Mk4 Mondeo because its just that good at towing, and has a better stereo, and uses 1/2 as much fuel, and is more comfortable, and....why do I fuck around with old cars again?

Aye, happy with that result.

I know what you mean about messing on with old stuff lol. But we do it anyway!

MLF’s you reckon? Haha

That's one handsome car.

Ford really nailed it with the mk4.

Not sure about spacing the wheels out nearer the curb though.

Still I'm sure you are careful with it.
