Youngsod Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 ...so it's the 3 door, 1.3L base model for you: Do better this year and we'll upgrade you to 5 doors and 1.6L Conrad D. Conelrad, davocano, JeeExEll and 24 others 27
Squire_Dawson Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I'd take a 2-door L any day. Larger engine would be nicer though. I have no aspirations. mercrocker, JeeExEll and Tamworthbay 3
tommotech Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Not many ‘tina (edit ) 2 doors in that shape around, not that many were built though.
catsinthewelder Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I don't think there were any, all the estates were 5 door. I'd love that beige 2 door but if I parked it here I'd be able to hear it fizzing away.
JeeExEll Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 ^^ A very original Taunus 2-door Ghia from ebay last year. You could have a Taunus 2.3S or Mk5 GLS (Recaros) in 2-door flavour. Tamworthbay, Shep Shepherd, catsinthewelder and 7 others 10
wuvvum Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 That beige one was rather lovely though. And the little Kent didn't look as lost under the bonnet as I'd expected it to.
sierraman Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 In the UK the 2 door was offered mainly through notability in 1.6 auto I think.
Shep Shepherd Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 The blue 4-door looks like new. Bet it went for a silly amount of money. oldcars 1
Bren Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 My mate had a four door 1.3.It made my 2000 SD1 feel like a veyron. Crispian_J_Hotson, AMC Rebel, danthecapriman and 4 others 7
Felly Magic Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 That Tina buttery biscuit base would be seriously fit on standard steels, my mum learnt to drive in a navy blue mk5 1.3
AlabamaShrimp Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I sense the future... A future lower, with crap wheels and an engine that 'keeps up with modern traffic' and a respray.... Tbh I hate the colour but it's the Cortina for me if I had to have a one. Look can I swap it for a Sierra?
cort16 Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 My 2 dr mk4 was originally a beige base with a 1.3.
adw1977 Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 All two door Mark 4 and 5 Cortinas were 1.3 (base or L) apart from the disability cars mentioned above.
bunglebus Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I must be alone in preferring the look of the 4 door Tincorner. Mind you that two door Ghia gave me want face for rarity value! My 3 door Sierra was cool, in 1.6L spec was AFAIK the highest trim level available in the UK, unlike our European counterparts who could have almost anything as a 3 door. The Reverend Bluejeans 1
cort16 Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Going to try to mot it this week. Gulp. It shows will be mot exempt this year if I can get it through its mot. HillmanImp, Sudsprint, Rave and 11 others 14
oldcars Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 That blue four door is class. My grandfather had one on a X plate, same colour and door decals. Sure it was a carousel.

My ideal spec would be a 2.0 auto! I've driven a 1300 mk3 Cortina and a 1300 Capri mk3. Both were slow, even compared to the 1600 which wasn't particularly quick. Mind you, I'd still happily have one in 1300 flavour. My 1600 Capri isn't fast either but it's about good enough for normal use, if you drive too fast nobody can see how cool you look in it!! Bren Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 We had a blue one similar to one in pics but it had crusader stripes despite being a 1.6L. I remember the boot floor disappearing on three sides. Cortina's definately knew how to rot.

I remember the boot floor disappearing on three sides. Cortina's definately knew how to rot.I think they all did then. My Capri was pretty fucked too! Piss poor rust proofing, shoddy build quality on some, owners who didn't clean them...Ford must have been one of the last car makes to bother upping their game with rust protection too given the state many much more modern Fords still dissolve! danthecapriman Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I keep thinking of going back to the garage that service my company van and buying the Cortina they've got at the moment. It's a 72 mk3 1600GXL 4 door. Been in a garage for years but it's owner dragged it out and dumped it it at this garage to sort it for an MOT but he can't afford to do it so it's just sitting around most of the time.Apparently he wants about £5k for it though! It's got no MOT, needs the sill ends welding, needs servicing and brakes sorting (seized), the paints ok but could do with a repaint longer term and the vinyl roof is pretty poor. Still want it though!

Dick Cheeseburger Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 That 2 door mk5 is a thing of relative beauty. I assume it went for silly money?
JeeExEll Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I can vaguely remember the Mk5 Cortina Estates being offered with a "Business Pack" around 1980 / 81. It was in the Ford Cars brochures near the "S-Pack" page. From memory the Business Pack was based on the 1.6L Estate and had heavy duty springs, etc. A sort of "travelling-sales-rep's special", a bit like the Mk2 Granada "Taxi Pack" saloons. The option may have been available on GL and Ghia estates too, I don't remember. Had a quick look on t'net for more detailed spec but not found it yet.Bet most of those were run into the ground by around 1987 and must be really rare / extinct now. All with 4-speed manual boxes too. ^^ "Dad, can I borrow the car?". egg, Dick Cheeseburger, ProgRocker and 1 other 4

I still remember the reg numbers yet I can't even remember my own phone number, nearly all the Cortinas were locally registered and almost all from the same dealership. Checked DVLA and not even one of them survives, last one was taxed 1998.Had 3 Cortinas myself over the years but never kept them very long. One, a Mk4 2000S, TSE 777R, went on fire. danthecapriman 1
fordperv Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 overrun and wuvvum beat me to it with sierras
adw1977 Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 My 3 door Sierra was cool, in 1.6L spec was AFAIK the highest trim level available in the UK, unlike our European counterparts who could have almost anything as a 3 door. Although (as pointed out already) there were 3 door sporty models like the XR4i, it's true that 1.6L was as high as you could go otherwise, there were no 3 door GL or Ghia models. European markets got facelift 3 door Sierras, as well as a bigger range of trim levels.
danthecapriman Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Europe got the Granada mk1 and 2 in 2 door saloon flavour too which we didn't. Annoyingly as I think they look great, the mk1 in particular. Any pics?My whole family (dad's generation) had loads of Cortinas when they were nearly new, mostly Mk2 onwards, all the models, too many to bore people with a list. One, a Mk4 2000S, TSE 777R, went on fire.I don't have any of it. It's local though so I'll go round and see if it's still there.I'd love to have it. It's one of those ones where it's a low owners car that's been sat in a garage for yonks, probably taken off the road in the 80's or 90's. It looks bloody good over all, just needs tidying up.A mk3 saloon has got to be the ideal Cortina imho! Fantastic looking car, pure 70's! JeeExEll 1
AlabamaShrimp Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 How hard would it be to convert one of those Granadas to right and drive? I know you'd need the parts and dash I assume the holes and stuff are already molded into the bodywork for either side drive.
JeeExEll Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 ^^ Dan.Would make a good future project. Check with owner first if you can take pics. We had PSO 520L, a daytona 1600GXL with black cloth interior, from early 1975 till late summer 77. For some reason which we can't remember a 2000cc was swapped into it in 1976, still with the 1600 diff. It would have been a major engine failure of some kind rather than just an upgrade.Replaced in 77 with a purple velvet met 2000E saloon, manual with black interior, Aberdeen-registered BAV 895N.
