With cars over a certain age, it's worth whatever anyone's willing to pay. It looks like a clean usable car that, with a spot of remedial work done now, will easily outlast many much newer secondhand cars going for six times that price. Certainly it's dearer than most Mk 2 Monds on Gumtree etc, but as the trader said, "find me another". It's locally registered with known backstory (and yes, that kind of thing would sway me too) and it looks capable of regular use (even if said pal isn't actually going to use it). Sounds like everyone's broadly happy with this transaction.

Late '90s cars seem to be vanishing rapidly from the roads - it'd be good to see this one survive rather than being flogged for £300 to Mr Fixit to throw all his painting and decorating gear in for eighteen months, until it needs a set of tyres for the MOT but instead gets weighed in.

The local thing would sway me. I’m waiting for a numberplate to be issued by the dvla after removing an Irish plate and I put a note in the letter saying I really hoped it could be a •AB plate (with six characters- the holy grail). And most of my friends say most of my cars aren’t worth the money I pay for them, if they’re £300 or £1500. I don’t think their £12000 second focus or similar is good value either.

Your mate sounds like a right card. Is there any chance of photos of the rest of the fleet? Only yesterday I was watching an old plaxton paramount which has appeared on a route nearby and wondering if I had storage would I buy it despite the fact I have no licence.

A chap who buys prime shite fodder just to gaze lovingly at them on his driveway because he cannot drive them sounds absolutely sodding perfect for this place.

Get him online pronto.

I think what's seen a lot of these off apart from the rust is a clutch going. You are probably looking £400 minimum to fit a clutch to one. Its not a driveway job unless you are an absolute masochist.

Eventually that will see mine off. But hopefully that's a long while yet.

I think hes applied to join the forum, once hes on im sure he would be more than willing to put up a post with his fleet, which he does have photos of on flickr but I will let him do it himself.

The fleet stands at:

1958 Ford Thames Trader truck which was his late fathers which was disposed of when he passed away and was tracked down in a breakers years later and bought back

1999 V Ford Transit 2.5 DI 80 SWB, rare in medium atlantic blue, twin glazed rear doors, factory option central locking, electric windows and mirrors, same local owner for 14 years, my mate acquired it from guys who were going to break it for spares for their ice cream vans.

1998 R Ford Escort 1.6 Finesse in Amparo Blue, was one of the local Ford dealers demonstrator, bought by an elderly gent who passed away and the car was stored in a garage for 10 years before it was sold on by the guys wife to friends of hers, my mate saw it outside a local garage and asked the garage to pass his number onto the owners and said he would buy the car if they ever wanted to sell it.

2004 53 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 Zetec, another local car which has been all over the country which was tracked down to be his daily driver until he decided a diesel Mondeo of this age with nearly 100k probably wasnt going to be a long lasting car reliability wise.

2002 52 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Zetec, as he liked the mk3 he tracked down a local petrol one to replace the diesel.

And now this Mk2 Mondeo.

He also has a 2000 X reg Dennis Dart bus joint owned with another mate of his, and a 1979/80 V reg Leyland Titan double decker bus.

Previous cars include a 2001 Y reg Escort 1.6 Finesse (previously a recorded write off), a 2002 02 Ford Fiesta 1.3 Flight and a 2004 04 BMW 320I SE.

It’s a nice car in nice condition, who gives a monkeys if the trader made £500 or whatever on it? That’s what traders do.

If I was your friend I would protecting my investment* by getting those arches sorted (the very ends of the sills might need checking too) and covering it in Waxoyl/Dynax.

Oh, and don’t use it in a Scottish winter, use a Mk3 for that as they are much more rust resistant.

£950!!! He sounds like a right character your mate!! I say don't get him on here, then we can all have our own image of him in our minds eye

It's worth a cup of cold piss and a Twix.

W reg Mondeos are valued  by a man in Beijing and by the kilo.

Bet the OP wishes he'd never posted up the fupping Mondeo now.

Too true, thought the congregation here would like to see a saveage of a tidy late mk2 Mondeo as its surely prime autoshite made all the sweeter by being a tidy local to us car, thats fell into caring hands rather than thrashed and abused by the typical mk2 Mondeo who would just run into the ground and scrap it when done. Its certainly unusual with the wheels and non standard grille fitted from new, rather than the correct Zetec chicken wire type grille.

You can get a universal key. Its called busting the fucker off with a screwdriver at the roadside following a puncture.

I'd love to find a set of NOS chrome alloys. If only to preserve for future generations to say this is what was the upper echelons of taste in the 1990s. That and that dreadful purple colour all 1997 fleet Mondeo TD LX appeared to be. If I could describe the period 1996 to 1999 in a colour it would be that shade of purple.

I worked at the local ford dealers during the chrome wheel era. The number of claims ford completed on those peeling rims was silly.

They peeled in the showroom!

Looked great on a met red ghia x auto I was given as a staff car until they peeled!

That looks a really tidy Mondeo.

I don't think it was overpriced when you see it's condition and originality and detailed history. Sure, you could find a cheaper one but the fact that this one's not been messed about with would inspire a lot of confidence in it for years to come. A bit like buying an older style "3-year-old" car, but for £950.

I think I'd want to drive it and keep it well maintained and get loads of use out of it though, rather than just look at it. But hey ho, if the guy's happy . . .

Posted

I like it. Been ages since I saw one that tidy, and in five years there won't be very many left and we'll be kicking ourselves for not saving more of them.

Price? Maybe a tad salty but remember the most it can depreciate by is £950. In fact the true figure will probably be less as there will always be parts/scrap value to one of these. So still cheap motoring and I bet it's comfy too.

As Anthony G stated some rust prevention would be a good idea. Who knows, one day this could appreciate quite nicely

I will find out how well it drives in the summer, mate wants to tax and insure her, and go runs on dry sunny days, been years since I’ve driven a mk2, and what strikes me sitting in it is how light and airy the cabin is, and how spacious having been used to modern bigger cars, my fathers mk4.5 has loads of room as that shape is cavernous inside but the mk2 just feels less claustrophobic to sit in with its lower window ledges, feel closer to the windscreen due to smaller dash, and the interior honestly is like new, the steering wheel and gear knob have almost no wear, carpets like new, even the Ford rubber mats are like new.

It’s clearly been a very original and pampered car in its time, full Ford history, original keys, key rings, book packs, owner of the dealerships business card, plates, sticker etc and has had the Ghia type grille and Scorpio wheels from new.

What I can’t work out is what the Zetec spec is supposed to be based on, seems like a GLX but with alloys, front fogs, spoiler etc but has additional stuff like 3rd rear head rest, centre rear armrest etc and seems to have more toys than an Si spec but for some reason is missing the colour coded door handles and leather steering wheel from an Si, seems Zetec is a bit of a hybrid of a trim level.

I was impressed with some of the features it has for a 2000 registered mid range spec, having some stuff even brand new cars don’t have in mid range spec, but missing other bits and pieces. Quickclear heated screen and washer jets, air con, 3 headrests in the back, front and rear armrests, electric heated mirrors, CD player, ABS, electric height adjustable drivers seat, but no leather wheel, no trip computer, windy windows in the back, and not even a mirror on the drivers sunvisor, really odd spec.

It does also have a Matt silver dash trim around the speedo binnacle and air vents which I never knew was a thing on mk2s, thought they were all black with the exception of a Ghia etc which maybe had wood effect.

Last Zetec trims all had silver dash surrounds came with fog lamps, being 2.0 should have rear discs. Mirror on drivers was Ghia only, as was rear elec windows and the trip computer. No idea about grill as the Zetec had mesh job.

The rear head rest was an option when new.

All except base and LX had rear arm rest.

I sound like you here Hendry with my knowledge of specs. By the time it was run out the line up was usually Verona (LX) Zetec (GLX) and Ghia etc. A few made it to 51 plates but these are mostly a cancelled fleet order for the Police of ST200's in white, which got touted off at silly prices.

Seemingly 3 rear head rests was standard on Zetec.

Noticed most W and X plate Verona’s are registered as that but have LX tailgate badges, poor form from Ford that I think.

Can remember these nearly new on forecourts where a year old 1.8 Verona was £8995.

Saw a brochure for the 1995 mk1 Verona where it’s £12,995 new, with inflation that’s £23,200 in today’s money which is more than the list price on a mk5 Titanium spec 2.0 TDCi 150bhp, so clearly these weren’t cheap cars when new!

I can't remember the last time I saw a Mk2 mundano on the road, let alone in a scrapyard.

Nice example, hope it gets kept on the road for a few years to come.

I'm hoping prices skyrocket, I've a genuinely rust free example on the drive albeit in the least desirable spec. Originally I bought it as as a stop gap while waiting on Mk2 Focus prices to come to what I'd class as reasonable.

Its a good car I've had 3 Mk2s now, I'll keep it going for as long as it lasts, probably a clutch failure will see it out but who knows.

Every single mk2 Mondeo I've had though has pissed water in during rainfall. As they get older it seems to come in through the bulkhead and inner wing seams. I just drilled a hole in the floor to avoid this.

I have owned two mondos

M925 UJO Mk1 1.8 LX I bought at a year old for 9 bags and sold 3 years later because mrs thestag wanted a newer car for some inexplicable reason.

R363 RJH Mk2 1.8 LX bought at 6 months old with 3k miles on the clock for 8bags..

Couldnt give either away when it came to selling despite full service history and low mileage.

Both seemed to live until about 10 years old before being recorded as untaxed.

I liked both, light airy, reliable and comfortable

Although this one is a tidy car, thats probably due to the low mileage, I reckon if it had done high mileage it would be rotten, and thats a bit rubbish, they arent really usable cars because they rust so so bad.

My mate actually said to me the other day although my car is scruffy and has some surface rust through stone chips and being a mk5 Golf descendant which for some reason rust terribly for a modern car (although not usually any more than surface corrosion to look unsightly) it has done 155,000 miles and a mk2 Mondeo or any other 90s Ford with that sort of mileage would have more holes in it than a sieve. Thats actually appalling, probably about the only thing Vauxhall did better in the 90s was rustproofing.

Posted

I'd beg to differ on the rust front, I've seen plenty of low mileage rusty ones. Waxoyl it and you should be OK.

Aye my point was if it had done high mileage it would be utterly rotten given how bad 90s Fords rust even if low mileage.

Luckily this one is tidy except the arches on the back and wee minor bits, really is very clean for one thats not done 3000 miles and been garaged its whole life.

Thats a nice looker mate, like the saloon Mondeos! had it since it was 3 years old and near enough new then? Didnt realise the boot floors could get as bad as this on them!!

Thought I'd give mine a wash today. I've decided to photograph it though laying horizontally 5ft off the ground.
