Zimmer Golden Spirit (Zimmer Motorcars Corporation was founded in 1978).

By coincidence, the Rollator, a wheeled version of the Zimmer frame (see what I've done there?), was invented in 1978 by the Swede Aina Wifalk.

Edit - found a picture of Aina and her Rollator taken in 1978 -

Fiat Ritmo / Strada

Was almost launched with the name Fiat 138, but they thankfully saw sense by letting buyers put a name to the face. And what a distinctive face it was. Strada translates as road whereas Ritmo to rhythm.  A fanfare of publicity declaring it built by robots, but rusted and fell to bits just the same.  Typically fun Fiat of the era: light, agile, fragile and fun to drive.

I've had 4 Strada Cabrio's in the past, does that make me insane?????

Somehow the Saab looks much more modern than all the others.

That because the one pictured is the 1987 facelift, here’s an older one:

1978, eh?   Year the Motor Show moved to the NEC and hence dropped off my planet.

I remember these being new then, though....

Visa is a great car and the C15 vans are great to use. I have a C15. Loads and loads of C15's about in France and some in Spain too.

..... A fanfare of publicity declaring it built by robots...

That advert slogan led to a plethora of car stickers along the lines of:

"Designed by computers, built by robots, driven by morons."

Which looks just as out of place alongside those clunkers (bar the Monza and RX7) on the last page.

Worth mentioning the 1978 900 was nowt but a 99 with longer nose and tail, which was a 1967 car. Great design transcends time - this is a good example.

To have a Turbo at the end of the 70s or early 80s was not only to have something better made and built than almost anything else, but I'd argue more deeply satisfying to own than any other non-sports car.

A friend's Dad had a good job and had a string of them from 1979 until the 9000 arrived, the early ones were like an iron fist in a velvet glove and hugely characterful (including that odd gearchange). As the years wore on, the other-worldliness vanished a little but most qualities remained. When they were replaced by the GM car in 1993 some journalist remarked the 99/900 had lasted 5 years longer than the Citroën DS.

1978 was the year of the last new Holden Torana, the UC
