I'd rather it commute and stretch it's legs with you Richard than battle with the Christmas traffic up here. Enjoy away! If you feel the need to fix niggles, please fix away! (I'd find some form of compensation, of course)

The controls are absolutely delightful to use. You get used to the switchgear so quickly - especially as you're mostly panicking about the steering for the first few miles! Would I have another? Only if there was an aftermarket kit to boost the heater fan and if I could somehow have Hydractive suspension.

I agree with Richard though. The OHV engine and auto box is a marvellous combination for a CX. I still rate it as one of the best autos I've ever driven. Who really needs more than three speeds?

A bit late (partly due to some complications at the time) but Mrs red5 and I (mostly me) would like to announce the arrival of red5 junior no.2 - Monday 7th December at 3.23am.

Sam   :-)

I know we spoke about this already but CONGRATULATIONS! Felicitations and Ã˜Â£Ã™â€žÃ™Â مبروك (Mabrook - which is Arabic for Congratulations) on your new arrival.

Also, nice to hear RichardK you've got back behind the wheel of a CX. I had a small drive of it too and it was greatly inspiring, certainly felt more confident in its abilities than I do the Sterling. I still love 800s though.

Fly: SP30 in the Picasso. Bloody Nottingham. 40, with a tiny bit of 30 and a camera, apparently notorious for nabbing people. Hope I get SAC. CX has been driven accordingly paranoid-style.

Think you may get away with speed awareness course, I got one for 48 in a 40 in Notttingham, think the rule is 8mph + 10% or something.

They were quick sending the letter out to me so you should know soon enough.

By niggles, I mean repadding/rebuilding the seats to proper CX standards and repairing that D-pillar joint. That's fairly major niggles to be randomly fixing - though I'm happy for the work to happen here if I can get the 300CE out of the way! I'm absolutely loving it, you have no idea how happy it's making me to be driving a CX!

Letter has hit friend who owns the Egg already - I'm so ashamed, I never knowingly speed in towns and it was a bloody 40 right before and right after - it's one junction on the road from the centre to Stapleford. Apparently notorious for getting people and was much complained about when implemented.

So they've been given the details and I've said they can dawdle for the number of days needed to send the form back ;) It's Christmas. Maybe the camera processing will be a tad overloaded.

Hmmm, for a moment I thought your old White CX was the Stondon one:

Also I really wish I could remember what happened to my rust-free bootlid. I remember saving it, I remember it being around... wonder if it went with the GTi, or if i sold it, or if it's lurking in a shed in the Borders, long forgotten.

If it is the latter (highly unlikely) I know where it's going.

No - my last one is seen there in 1999, maybe 2001. Can't actually remember! Wish I had pics of my Croisette, Safari and S1 Turbo. Plus that Stondon one has a trip computer. Envy.

I prefer S1 interior overall. S2 door cards are better, some bits of trim are nicer, but ergonomically the S1 interior just works astoundingly well.

I don't see the attraction of the CX myself. I had one years ago to see how I got on with the hydraulics as I always wanted an SM. After the CX I decided they were nothing special and didn't bother getting an SM as all the complexity didn't make it a better car in my opinion. I went out and bought a Maserati spyder instead which was so much better.

thats the joy of old motors- you can try AND buy :)

I would rather have a CX than an SM. That is based on never having owned an SM, but the complexity puts me off - the CX is, to my mind, absolute perfection in concept. Execution... it would be lovely to sit and use modern advances on that basic design. Better engines, gearboxes, rustproofing, panel engineering, wind-noise suppression/seals, electronics - but without changing a single element of the environment or exterior appearance. Ditch the torque spring for struts & carbonfibre complex-skinned bonnet instead of metal to get rid of that bulge/crack risk. Audi C3/NSU style window runners and flush frames. Flush front glass. Improved underbody airflow (already good, though). Dynamat floor/boot panelling.

The steering, ride & handling are top notch when they're in perfect order. Maybe more body movement than a sportier driver likes, but then I'd just buy a different car for that role.

And if the 3-speed slushbox is good, imagine what the best FWD advanced autobox would be like with one. They do exist, even if not used by PSA - even a Chrysler 4-speed from 3/4th Gen Voyager would suit the 2.5 well and has torque lockup and adaptive shifting.

Congratulations dude. I'm due mine in a few weeks (if not sooner if it ends out coming out the sunroof) so I'll soon know how your feeling!

I do have a spare set of cloth Pallas seats....

No! I like the used look, although that D pillar does worry me a bit on what's going on underneath.

Not the tops. The tops are LOVELY. Just hogrings, springs and foams. You're supposed to be enveloped by a CX seat, not eaten.

The D-pillar concerns me. I want to remove the gutter trim and window surround, needlescale the filled area, and take a look at the join with the camera underneath too. One to save for when the MOT expires maybe, or if you have to go on an extended engineering adventure around the world.

You need to come up to Scotland and play on a full size CX..

are you any good at door swaps?

Posted

Christ, it's been 16 years. IIRC those door clips don't make it easy but I vaguely remember unbolting from the inside of the door on my Croisette, leaving hinges on body and in that regard, the best help I can offer is the same as anyone else - a pair of arms to support the door and help align it. If the check strap setup is broken then I can't now remember what I did to fix mine - I did one and learned to live with it on subsequent cars so suspect it was "fun".

Where in Scotland? I'm up seeing family for a while, $mysterygirl is up to Aberdeen for a couple of days without me (roads. Sod that. Plus existing plans before we met), so I'll have a little time to kill.

Still debating what my heart wants to do (pinching the CX to Scotland) vs. logic (driving that Egg up there), rust-laden roads and many miles on the older car seems very unfair. But, going to help fix CXs, in a CX, has an appeal. And flashbacks of 1990s.

Based just north of Glasgow and have a good knowledge of the CX you currently Pilot..

Assuming I can get coolant leak sorted I can get the CX somewhere dry no bother. Drop me a pm with your plans/dates.. FPB7'S CX knows where to go!

It's got inbuilt auto guidance to Neil's gaff! (I'm not helping, am I Richard?)

My cunning plan is to nick the 5spd out it so I can rifle bolt 2nd to 3rd in mine:)

There is an MX5 auto for sale not far away from me. MK1 in silver. I am very tempted but space to keep it, money to buy it....

Posted

Park it in the bentley boot-can use it to cover the master battery switch - stop the temptation to fiddle!

Posted

I have the correct brake slider for the XM. Now I just need a spell of dry weather (ha!) and some time to get the stoppers overhauled. New slider, discs and pads up front, new pads at the rear.

Posted

Just been out and waxoyled the heap! Took all the boot trims out and did inside where the wheel arches go and stuff. all under the bonnet, wheel arches, door jambs etc.

I feel quite proud of myself but two minor points....

I am filthy!

I am utterly fucked!

I'm not sure it's fair to inflict Leics - Kelso - Edinburgh - Kelso - Glasgow - Kelso - Edinburgh - Whitby - and back on your car with all the risks of holiday traffic, drivers and salted roads, but at the same time, CX to Scotland and "returning to my roots", plus showing a certain someone CXs and all my favourite places has a massive draw for me...

If you're really well behaved there may be scope for a pie shoap visit...

Just done my Christmas shopping.

In fact I did it in less time than it took the SAS to storm the Iranian embassy.
