surely that minor will be saved? Im not usually a fan of them, but thats a nice one, and low mileage too.I cant imagine the Morris Minors club letting this one go, but there is alot of them around, but it is a lovely one.

It has fresh tyres and a new exhaust. But it will only be going as far as the crusher

I wonder if they were fitted to get it through the MOT, solely to qualify for the wasteage scheme.Surely a tidy MOT'd Morris Minor is worth circa £2k anyway.

This is going to create a whole load of problems in the near future'Prospective family need cheap hatchback for children, cant afford anything as its all been scrapped'Also, due to that, there will be so many used cars surplus to demand, no one will be able to afford them, as they just wanted an honest car, sadly scrapped many moons ago. This is creating waaaaaay loads of problems. Im worried about that Nissan Sunny in Old Basing i got a pic of, its prime fodder for this stupid scheme.

That's pretty much what the scheme is for- to take the good old cars off the market. The holy grail for the budget motorist is a car that's been owned by a relatively affluent mature person, well maintained, never thrashed, clean etc. These are exactly the cars that the scrappage scheme is hoovering up.

Hmmm, very green. What a hideous waste it will be if this gets crushed. I'm not a massive fan of the Minor, but that looks a lovely old thing. I imagine after two minutes sat in that anyone would want to save it.

That Minor does look reasonably good. And even if it's not perfect then it must surely be worth £2k? Wonder about the plate - getting transferred onto the new car I wonder?Really seems a shame.

Right. I'm on it. £1 for anyone who can find out which dealer sent it in for scrapping! (I'm awaiting a call-back from the scrapyard...)

Good luck Mr Wobbler, Knight of the Scrappage Crusades!

What 'punishment' do you have in mind for the dealer?

Shame it’s been publicised so widely, otherwise a constructive bit of reshelling might have been the answer...Richard’s post above succinctly describes the cars I choose to buy. Due to all their nonsensical technology I’m fearful of moving onto newer stuff (plus there are other things I’d rather spend my money on), so where that leaves me in the future I’m not sure.

The Republic of Ireland did this scheme well before us. Why do you think so many early 80s classics are bought to go over the water? Cos there's none left there. Same thing will be happening here soon (5-10 years) but there won't be anywhere for us to get cheap classic from!

Oh what a day. A reader has tipped us off about an immaculate 1961 Mini that's been submitted for scrappage! Can't save 'em all but maybe we can convince the manufacturers to have a bit of heart...

Why not? I don't mean buy them, but it has to be stopped somehow. Even if they sling em on ebay, they will fetch more than the scrap value, even the grand the dealers might loose in scrappage....

I don't know if its just laziness - owners wants rid of car and it's easier to trade it in as scrappage thus saving the hassle of a private sale or what but you'd think someone who owns the Minor (or indeed the Mini) would have more attachment to it than say a mid '90's Corsa and would want to make sure it survived and had a future.I can understand why a lot of '80's and '90's cars will be getting scrapped - to the owners they are nothing but an old car close to what they consider the end of it's working life. But someone owning a proper 'old' car presumably cares for it a bit more and wouldn't want to see it crushed.

Apparently we (as in us, this site, Autoshite) get a mention in this month's Practical Classics in an article about the scrappage scheme.

Classic and vintage cars were 'just old cars' once. I actually blame the dealers, they don't HAVE to take the car as scrappage, they can just take it as a trade in. At the end of the day their bit of the deal is only a grand, the other grand comes from the government. They could just as well rip up the paperwork and give 2 grand off, then sell the car. Nobody will shoot the salesman for it!

/\ Very true, the dealer *could* do that. But most of them won't. Most of the dealer groups are PLCs and are only interested in making a fast profit. They don't have the infrastructure to sell old cars and won't have any interest in doing so. Unfortunately all they want is to sell new cars, lots of them. Most of the dealers and manufacturers would be overjoyed if the scheme was extended to even newer cars if it was to mean they would be able to sell even more new cars. Sadly few of the people who make the decisions that could help save some of the cars that should be saved are only interested in stock turnover, finance sales and balance sheets. To them an old car is just another trade in to be gotten rid of.I would suspect that those cars that have been saved from scrapage have been traded in to smaller, family owned dealerships where the owner or whoever has some enthusiasm for older cars and is prepared to do something to step in and save them.

yeh autoshite is mentioned in the new PC, apparently the Riley club only knew of that RME after a tip off from this website.PC also says there is only 22 mk 1 Ponys still around.....

New car dealers will take all their non-frontable part exes and stick them in an auction. Am immaculate 1961 Mini (if that's to be believed) would make a couple of grand in any auction. The dealers there would know what it is and what it's worth.I suspect the immaculate 1961 Mini is immaqculate from 10 feet away but is in fact a rotten, pogged up old turd. Even so, it's still a crime.Take comfort with the fact that Mandelson will be out of a job soon. His opportunities for bumming sessions on Russian Millionaires yachts will dry up when he's of no political use.

I've got to say that during my time working in plate glass 'n' chrome dealerships I encountered more car 'ageism' there than anywhere else I've known. When I worked for VW the other salesmen could never work out why I'd go home in trade-in Mk2 Golf GTis instead of my 'demonstrator' Polo. They just couldn't get it, why would someone choose to go home in a five year old car instead of a current reg one? Same when I worked for Nissan, my 'demo' Almera did less miles in 3 months than the other demos did in a fortnight. Because I only used it to go to and from work, and I took my Carlton 24v at the weekends. "But that old Vauxhall is 9 years old, the Almera is new". Eventually the General Manager told me I was going to be fired if I didn't use the Almera more, or if I brought the Carlton instead again, so I left. No way I was going to do more miles in that Almera than I absolutely had to. They were even trying to get me to lease it. Fuck 'em. £150 a month (by the time tax etc has come out) to drive a hateful heap of shite that I didn't want in the first place? Oh, I hate Almeras. 1.4 Audition or something like that. 5 door. Blue with trim so foul even Mitsubishi wouldn't have used it in the Carisma. Noisy, crap on fuel, orrible seats, lousy ride quality and gutless. Did handle rather well though.

Given that one of the red top tabloid rags was saying that the government should extend the scrappage scheme and obviously the industry would be in favour of ever more subsidies, you might want to have a little vote on this poll -

Might as well make the most of it, eh!All the rat-faced tracksuited skinks who frequent there obviously get well looked after, you know £100 a week JSA, £500 a month housing benefit, council tax benefit, income support etc, all of which just gets spunked on drugs, cider and Richmond King Size, but if you have actually worked at all ever, forget it!Because if you have paid tax & NI, then you are entitled to LESS than those who haven't, and are also made ineligable for most other benefits, and you can't get HB if you have a mortgage... it's incredible really and you can see why this nation has a problem with generation after generation of nasty little peasants who will always get more from the system than they can hope for from working. And don't start me off on the 'Jobcentre', which is a complete misnomer, it should be the 'don't want a jobcentre' as they are there only to make sure that you HAVEN'T worked, rubber stamp your doler book and send you away... they do f*ck all to get folk into work from what I saw. It's a very unpleasant experience and one I would not wish on anyone.... a few weeks was more than enough for me.

spot on buddy - I was on "the brew" for 2 months 2 years ago and NEVER again. I would rather do anything. The most unpleasant experience and you are right, it is aimed against those who do take personal reponsibility. The real tradgedy of this banking crisis is the human cost of unemployment, fiscal worry and the awful certainty that you have to every morning look at your family feeing that you are letting them down.I completely and utterly detest the modern generation of politicians most of whom have never had to hold down a proper job, run a business etc and yet seem to think they are qualified to interfere with our lives with their criminal misuse of public funds. They suck and the whole fucking system sucks....cuntsyeah!
