yeah, well I think its a shame that the old Astra aint gonna roll no more, I've never particularly cared for Vauxhalls of any age although am warming to the 70s and 80s stuff nowadays, its managed nearly a quarter of a century which most cars fail to by a long shot, someone must have loved it once.

There is a similar one at my local Vauxhall dealer. However the car in question is a 5 door Corsa and quite frankly I wouldn't give a fuck if every single one was crushed

My mK2 Astra is 20yo this year and the bugger refuses to die. 1.6 auto, reliable and economical, never (no seriously) NEVER let me down in 6 years ownership and never failed an mot until this years and had to have £50 worth of welding, couldnt get another car for 50 sovs so has stayed another year, even had people coming up me drive offering cash for it  like I say its payed for, bash it and I won't cry, even cleaned the moss off it with a plastic scouring pad, added a bit of "patina"........Do I want to go into debt for a new car and worry if I will still have a job to go to over the next few years??????????? Do I bo£$&%£S

Dealers don't have to SORN stuff, or indeed register it in their name.

You and your mate absolutely fucking terrify me.

Not many cars out there I dislike to the level of the Astra to be honest. Most cars I'm upset to see them die, but the Astra is a definate exception. I will celebrate when the world is down to its last 10 Astras. I may even throw a party, so if anyone would like to let me know when they're all gone I'd appreciate it.Hateful things.
In your opinion. I thought that up Liverpool way, the Astra was the 'scally's' weapon of choice! Certainly was when I lived up in Wallasey.

Hmm... Autoshite anti-scrappage stickers/slogans anyone?Such as for my 1991 BX which is a Prime Candidate for the scheme:"Citroen will pay £2000 for this car? No Thanks.""SAY NO TO THE SCRAPPAGE SCHEME""LOVE YOUR OLD FAITHFUL"Let's have a shitter on display in prominent locations with "Save me from the scrapman :( The scrappage scheme is a pointless waste"I think Autoshite gatherings are in order, or organised convoys of defiance (a bit like Drive It Day). Mark.

The local Ford dealer to me has a Skoda Favorit as their 'Scrappage Billboard'The ironic thing is they have clamped it to stop someone nicking it.. why?

When I get the Stanza on the road, I'm going to drive over to the Nissan dealership in its current state (half-painted door bottoms and a primered-up rear arch) and wait for a salesman to pounce and look interested as they explain all the benefits of their scrappage scheme and how I could trade in my old clunker and get a nice new Micra instead. Then I'll abruptly become disinterested and go "Sorry, are you on parts? I was just wanting a grille retaining clip."Think of it as a salesman scrappage scheme, they trade in 20 minutes of their time and receive the chance to be really angry and go for a smoke.

i was thinking of taking advantage of the scrapage thingy as my (crappy) bmw just failed it's MOT :( , catalytic conterter req'd, also front flexi's, a couple of bulbs and a new set of number plates :? (apparently illegal digits  )

must say, it's been a bag of shite while i've owned it and it's broken down more than any other car that i've owned

problems include-

blown head gasket due to siezed water pump, new pump, thermostat and head gasket replaced, cost £400..

two rear bushes collapsed (at different times) cost for job done £80 each side...

rear wheel bearing gone (+ new brake pipe etc) £60...

clutch* went soon after i bought the car, cost £200..

there has been other stuff but i'm getting old and the old cabbage just aint what it used to be :oops:

here's the offending pile...

actually, i was expecting it failing the test on much more so i'm not too upset :D:D

*- when i viewed the car there was 133,000 on the clock and the service book was stamped up to 129,000, that was on the sunday, i collected the car the following friday and suddenly there was 136,500 on the clock :shock: - three and a half fecking thousand miles added in five bleeding days, i don't do that in a bollocking year

It needs to have a current MOT to be eligable for the scrappage deal, so if you are going to do that you'll need to spend the money on it anyway...

it's actually still in test (runs out on the 18th..)

also, i didn't realise that i'd only had it for ten months (seems much, much longer  )

oh well, it's gonna cost a few quid so i may as well run it 'til next year then look at scrapping it (unless it dies before  )

I bet spending more than £20k on an equivalent new car will work out much more cost-effective

SAR CHASM.I would get shut and get another E36 if that's your thing. It sounds like a bit of a liability.

All other things being equal, and assuming that spending £500 to fix your BMW would allow it to run reliably for the next 12 months, it's still going to cost you a fraction of the first-year depreciation on ANY new car. Especially seeing as the scrap incentive has bumped up list prices and buggered values of nearly-new stuff.

I agree, disposable motoring, sack it off and get another! Easy.

Fortunately for me, my opinion is the only one I've got

I thought that up Liverpool way, the Astra was the 'scally's' weapon of choice! Certainly was when I lived up in Wallasey.

That's one of the reasons why I despise 'em so. There was a spate in the early to mid 90s when every gobshite and his dog was running around here in Mk2 GTE 16vs. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, on average, two or three GTE valves to be seen buried into things a week.. Not other cars, they didn't seem to hit other cars, but lamp-posts, trees, railings, walls etc. There was a pub in Tuebrook that was hit twice by different Astra GTEs. Admittedly it always seemed that the crashes were caused by a surfeit of power over handling combined with scally drivers. Saw loads and loads of them. I'm pretty sure that's what happened to most of them, they've all been crashed into stationary objects!

Interestingly, the Nissan stealership's Megane Scenic thingy says "if your car is over 8 years old" - i will try and get a picture tomorrow as Im off in to work later (have to go to the IT dept to pick up a new SIM after some pond life stole my mobie yesterday yesterday ) so the trafic wont be as bad - will also try and picture that dinted rover 218

The local Pug Palace seem to be offering an even better scrappage deal on one of their pointless people carriers than a Megan that has lost its wheeltrims  :

That can't be scrappage, it must be their version of it, but the government won't give sod all for the cars. The good news is they won't have to be scrapped wither.... marketing ploy to get part ex's?

Someone has to rescue that Civic!

The Civic is utter bollocks. The garage were given the car some years ago, and have spent lots of money keeping it nice. They're just using it to make a point.Similarly, there's a Montego being used by a dealer down south somewhere and while they say "we paid £2000 for this" it's utter crap as they'd happily sell it for a few hundred if someone really wanted it.

May be worth a word in the local trading standards' ear re. the Civic, since it clearly states 'We've just paid £2000 for this car":roll::roll:

I worked for Trading Standards a few years ago, and funnily enough, that very road is on the 'juristiction' between two counties, so not sure whether it would be Wirral Council or Cheshire County Council.TS wouldn't really pursue something like that as there's no money to be recovered for their costs. An officer might be sent out, don't think anything would be done tbh.

Ah, that's good to read. Silly using it for this purpose though.
