That needs to be done and then parked outside a few select dealerships  :

These are the 'Scrappage' victims at our local Vauxhall dealer (not the Astra)...

Posted Image

None of these cars (except the Fiesta) looked ready for scrapping but the Mondeo and the well-specced Ka looked like they could put in another 10 years with ease. What a waste...

Who'se scrapped that Micra? That's prime 'provincial village garage £1995' fodder...

Saw this yesterday, which made me a little sad. Still a few of these knocking around but I suspect this shape Astra will become obsolete very soon. I think I'm right in assuming this is a very early mk2.

It is indeed, there is a G-reg one of those in daily use around here which i'm hoping to snap along with a superb Alfa 166 V6 8)

Your 10 year old car could be worth up to £8400 off a new car? Presumably it has to be an Aston Martin DB7 or something. What a load of toss.

Posted

Get with the programme Hirst man, most of the DB7's produced are 'eligable' for scrappage...

Posted

Yup.There'll be some mad rush to scrap your perfectly-good family car between now and May 2010 when it ends. Then everyone that wants a new car will have one, but the factories will still be churning them out. They'll sit at the docks for a while, factories onto 3 day weeks, massive discounts at the dealers and car firms begging for more help and unable to pay back government loans.I saw a very tidy 740 Estate up on ramps outside some dealer in Nottingham last night. Complete with dealer-induced dents to every panel, twats. I think it was a Citroen dealer too, like Citroen produce anything new that compares with a 740 in any way. "Hello, I'd like a large reliable estate car with a big engine to swap my Volvo for please""Oh dear Sir, I'm sorry. We only sell Citroens".

Surely the numberplate on that purple Fiesta is worth a few quid?A20 WEB?

I was thinking that but It's most likely been transfered across to the new car and the old plates have still just been left on the Festa.

The Astra is a depressing sight, not just because it`s probably one of the very first, but because it`s sort of being "humiliated" instead of just packed off to the scrappers.I suppose dealers displaying obscure old cars as if they were used johnnies fished out of the urinals of Heckmondwike`s most notorious gent`s bogs would be an insult to people like us if we cared what prospective Nissan Note pilots thought, but I`m sure we don`t.The Ford Ka may be okay, it looks like a Ka3 judging by the wheels, if it is, and its in one piece it`s probably worth slightly more to the trade - now that the dealers in older 2nd hand cars will be losing out on a lot of good stock - than the grand they`ll get off the government, also the trade won`t require a 50 page form filling in.

Speaking as someone who really despises Mk2 Astras, I think it's absolutely friggin' brilliant and should be displayed on a hyuuuuuge telly when it is finally destroyed. I'd buy the DVD, and I'd watch it too.I wouldn't give a toss if it was the first Astra to 'fade to pink', I still want it to die. I want it to die in as shameful a manner as possible. I would have preferred a motorway pile-up with that Astra and a load of X5s (drivers after their usual coke frenzy) but I can't win. It's just going to be crushed. One less Vauxhall. I can't even manage to force a grimace, it makes me happy. Actually reminds me of a friend years ago who had a quite new Mk2 Astra on finance and despised it. He despised it so much he asked me to meet him by his local scrap metal place one afternoon, he said he needed a lift. I sat in my car on the main road and was somewhat surprised to see my mates Astra taking the turn into the scrap yard. I sat there waiting. Two minutes later I saw his 4 year old Astra being loaded into the crusher, which was amusing. 10 minutes later matey comes wandering out of the scrap yard and goes to get into my car - at which point a plain clothes cop wanders up, shows his ID and says "I do hope you're not planning on claiming on the insurance for that Astra" to my mate. Matey denied it, as you would, but I think it somewhat scuppered his plans to finally escape the Astra. Took him another couple of years to finish paying for it, but as he has maintained to this day "Paying £100 a month for two years to NOT drive that Astra was a bargain".

V reg is six months from September 1999 on.So that Ka above is not actually a scrappage scheme vehicle, unless it is a Nissan dealership.

The Ka may be too young like you said as this is at a Vauxhall, not Nissan, Dealer. It's been here as long as the mondeo and the escort (about two/three weeks followed by the micra. The fiesta only came in this week). While the Mondeo, Micra and Escort had 'Scrappage' written on their windscreens, the Ka had 'Eco' written on it's :? . Anyone know what that means and will it mean the Ka gets to drive another day..?

Ah, it'll be the EcoFlex scheme then probably. Still means crushage AFAIK.

So the 'EcoFlex' scheme does not require a car to be 10 years old then, as I think we have all decided that the Ka is too young for the 'Scrappage' scheme..?(I've only just seen it in the photo I took... that Mondeo had alloys on it when it was first traded in... )

Somebody in Cortinadave's street scrapped a mint, low mileage, 51 plate Focua Ghia Saloon last year under Vauxhall's scheme.

They chopped in a Focus for a Vauxhall??? They surely deserve a good drubbing for such a mindless act of stupidity...

Can you do one about me cutting my C4 in half with a gas axe and loading the pieces into my Amazon to take and throw off a cliff?

Not many cars out there I dislike to the level of the Astra to be honest. Most cars I'm upset to see them die, but the Astra is a definate exception. I will celebrate when the world is down to its last 10 Astras. I may even throw a party, so if anyone would like to let me know when they're all gone I'd appreciate it.Hateful things.
