Well winter is on its way, so I am laying up most of the fleet to try and keep the rot at bay as they do use rather a lot of salt on the roads up here. The winter fleet usually comprises the modern Saab 9-3 diesel estate, a 4x4 of some description and a bucket for back up and emergencies. As my P38 range rover appears to be as reliable as expected, the need for a shiter this year increased. The last couple have been a 406 estate and a Saab 9-3, both purchased from another autoshiter.

The requirement for a winter shiter is reasonably large, reliable and have a tow bar, anything else is a bonus. So yesterday I was offered this, which has sat for 4 years unused and unstarted, and I do not have time for another project with so many waiting, and it is 50 miles away. Of course, I said yes and collect it next week!

Excellent! Good spec too being a GLT.

The more old Volvo's on here the better as far as I'm concerned!

Can't wait to see more on this.

Edit,

It's got a bloody good MOT history too! You should be laughing with this!

There is a 4 year gap in MOT history and mileage remained the same for 2 years despite the move from darn sarf to up here. Need to ask the PO about those!

Anybody is welcome to polish any of it, any time!

A penchant for Saabs and Range Rovers - are you me?

Volvo looks ace, I fancy one after having Saabs but don't feel the need for two big estates. Although the talk of roffling the Jersey T5 has me rubbing my thighs..

Bootlid sticker seems to indicate SVM approved

Standard fitment on all Volvo's!

None of my Volvos have ever had one!  Not even the white one that went up there when I sold it!  Have I been missing out?

Looks a lovely old barge though.  Do Not Paint/wash/polish!

Sadly it is not to be icon_sad.gif

Went down to collect the Volvo this morning. Went fully equipped with petrol, compressor and air line, battery and jump leads. Blew up the tyres, and put in a gallon of fresh petrol. Connected the jump leads for the first time in 4 years, turned it over. It eventually started but would only tick over on 2 cylinders and would not rev. Checked the timing, which was out and the distributor loose! Reset it and it started, and ran, revving cleanly but with a very lumpy tick over, which I am sure would be cured with a new set of plugs. All looking good, when I spotted something not quite right by a fuel pipe bracket on the bulkhead.

A quick prod with my finger resulted in a hole icon_evil.gif Further investigation showed the whole top RHS corner of the bulkhead to be rotten. OK, not too bad, a couple of hours fabricating and welding should have it fixed and should be a fairly simple fix, providing it does not extend to the inner wing. However, as the bodywork was so good, I decided a proper look underneath was called for. Starting on the offside, all looked solid but obviously starting to show its age, but when I looked at the nearside, the rear 18inches or so of the inner sill is also rotten.

After careful consideration, I decided to pass on it, which I am sure I will regret later! Nothing is a maor job, but I really need a winter car now and most certainly do not need another proect! So, if anyone wants a basically very good 240 GLT auto estate, which runs well and has nice black leather for 400 quid I am happy to pass on details.

Back to the shed to work on the existing projects.....

Oh bum, that's a shame. I'm slightly more than half looking for another 240 estate, but they are getting harder to find and the nice ones are getting expensive, sadly I'm a non-welder and won't buy project cars any more so not for me.

That's a pity , my dad made 2 volvo 240 estates last from 1978 to 2004-5

A p reg auto and a B reg manual , the B reg had to be de tuned to get it through the emissions test , he said it's only do 25mph , that one is the same colour so it's bought back a memory

Shame.  Have always fancied one of these.  Have owned several classic Saabs, and have always wanted to compare them.  Sadly they've always been too dear for me or turned up when I wasn't looking for one.
