As Opel is now under Peugeot control, what are the odds that they tell GM Aussieland to FRO?

I don't think they can.  The german plant making the latest Insignia is geared-up to export to Oz.  Its not a coincidence the new Insignia is out and Holden are, er.. out on their ear.

Quite! Plus the current discussions about gay marriage reveal that a lot of Aussies have no tolerance at all. The treatment of the indigenous people is utterly shocking but fine, applaud them for being a bunch of nasty arseholes just because they say nasty things without a care.

Who was it who said we should replace 'political correctness' with 'being respectful?'. They were right. 'This is being respectful gone mad.'

All of which is fair comment - but having worked with a few Aussies, I have also found some of them to be the most decent honest hardworking tolerant inclusive and respectful folks - like folk from the US, a lot of Aussies are horrified by the redneck racists in their midst.

Thinking about this, the only other countries that completely lost their car manufacturing industry i know of are Switzerland and Dahomey (yes, they assembled 2CV there in the seventies, seen the factory myself).

Is there any other nation that can be proud to say "we have lost our car industry"?

Who knows? It won't be a Chevrolet product anyway.

Conversely with the Caprice/SS being Holdens, what are Chevrolet going to have as a police car offering, Malibus?

Once the Caprice stock dries up it's unmarked Impalas only I think. Or trucks.   Not exactly inspiring is it?

Ireland?

Died in 1973 when Ireland joined the EU; everything was made here in CKD kits; Ford Cork was their first manufacturing base outside the US, Beetles made on the Naas Rd, Booth Poole seemed to assemble quite a few different models

The way Malaysia is heading, it could well end up being one of the fatalities. I think car manufacturers are in for a very tough time ahead.

The Australian car industry is dead. There are officially no cars being produced in Australia.

People who say the British car industry is dead can shove it right up their arse.

- Acceptance

People who say the British car industry is dead have generally not the faintest idea of what's going on, but still are allowed to vote.

The Australian car industry died decades ago, but GM and Ford held a weak government to ransom, when the government finally had balls to stand up to them, they all took their bats & balls home. The car manufacturers had billions in subsidies and this had to stop, it was like pouring money in to 3 black holes.

Interesting but ultimately useless fact. The Holden company was started in 1856 as a saddlery business in South Australia by James Alexander Holden who was born in Walsall (then rightly in Staffordshire) before developing into carts and ultimately cars. Sadly after 161 years it is now all (effectively) history.

(Thanks to my wife for gleanibg this from the 'Walsall Past and Present' Facebook group)

Related to Holdens Brewery by any chance??

I can't find any connection, the original Australian Holden was the son of Edward Holden, who founded ET Holden. The name rang a bell then I remembered the site of the factory is now the site of the Saddlers Centre (shops) in Walsall. The Brewery  was founded by Edwin Holden, who came from Netherton, near Dudley. There appears to be no link, but I feel that a visit to the Holden's Brewery Tap is essential to confirm this ;)

Going slightly off topic here, when I was in Singapore I noticed that some of the manhole covers were made in Walsall
