The £100 WBOD Carina deux, I've got vibrations they're multiplying

In the middle/back edge of the head there is a pipe which is the breather, into the air cleaner.

I haven't had the 'frying pan' off... But there is likely a flame trap/oil catcher in the pipe somewhere...

If that is blocked then the crankcase will be pressurised = blowing oilmist out the filler (when you remove it)??

I'll have a look at this, I've taken oil caps off many times with an engine running but this is the first time it's sprayed over the engine bay and my face

I did give its pipe a good going over earlier, maybe it was repaying the favour

If you google 'Toyota 4A-F PCV faulty' you get loads of hits.

Its a non return valve and can fail....

Mot passed! Need to sort the idle as it's high and a bit lumpy, Goes very well for a 1.6 , not the most involving to drive as the power steering is far too light but it'll do for winter!

top work.

These seem almost extinct now.

..... except in Ireland [the South!]

Even though i moted this a number of weeks ago i was using the rover as it was all legal so i didnt need to spend money on it, now the rover is due an mot ive started using this,

It ran cold when on the move so i replaced the thermostat which didnt go to plan as it never does!

it runs a bit lumpy at idle and overrun but giving it an italian tune up seemed to clear it up a bit, nothing out the exhaust anymore and no more weird smells, i think it just needed used. Got a set of wheels to fit with better tyres as the current ones resemble the tyres on a matchbox car, hard and no grip.

Ah... Tyres!

My LANDSAIL 'chinkkie deathrings' had their first taste of 'frosty/icemulch/salt/greasywet' tarmac over the last few days...

Hmmmmmmm...

I never knew my butt ring had teeth! >> my underkeggs were nibbled :(

Oof! I'm not known for an Ari Vatannen driving style - my car, however, has other ideas..

Steady

Ok I've started using this for work which involves around 15-20miles motorway driving.

I've noticed something odd with the gearbox I think, when sitting still with the clutch in rev the engine and a vibration can be felt through the clutch pedal.

At motorway speeds there is some sort of vibration, let off and it goes away, also when in fifth and lightly push the gear lever forward a tiny bit there is massive vibrations through the gear stick.

Is my gearbox about to implode? Goes into gear fine and pulls well enough??

Posted

I'm not a skilled mechanic, but my advice is;

Don't sit still with the clutch in and rev the engine and when in fifth, don't lightly push the gear lever forward a tiny bit.

barefoot advice + LP opinion + WBOD @£100 = Just drive it!!

*good tyres a top plan...

Normally I would just ignore that stuff but it's absolutely horrible to drive!

Ok thanks for that, I'll have a look at the car once I finish my 12 hour shifts.

Staying under 65 seems to keep it down to a minimum

My uncle once had a Mk1 Cav that used to vibrate horribly between 60 and 75mph.

He tried to use that as an excuse when the plod stopped him for doing 80.

Unsurprisingly, it didn't wash.

Don't be like Ralph...

If it isn't engine specific (crank revs) but through gear range you need to 7k it... Up the box, and push the stick each time to see if you have a rubber bush allowing engine/box twist/knock.

Simple solution is to mot the rover and sell the carina.

Ok ive probably been a bit harsh on this, ive had a look underneath again and can see nothing untoward. Its probably the engine being a bit thrashy, ive got used to it after a few hundred miles using it for work.

Being inside the arctic circle in scotchland its bloody freezing but the heater is like a furnace, have to turn it down.

Some boring photos of underneath, it must have been in a garage earlier in its life.

That 'perforated pretzel' rr susp link is a pair of bars on the Corolla... (dunno if they are swappable).

https://goo.gl/images/RccHA6

Seems a lot of cost to press that when a steel bar is already used next to it??

Engineers rule over BeanCounters for the last time, eh??

Is it a corolla underneath then? Apart from the perforated fritzl susp link

Nope... Celica (T - Platform) ftw ;)
