Looking good so far!!!.....

Just been round to the garage to drop off a wiring diagram (green books), mechanic has tested binnacle and it continuity tests fine - the old one didnt at all.

Fingers crossed this end! I'm sure it'll be fine...

Should know soon!

He did say something like dont use the DRL's... I think hes undone the circuit for them on the switch, being to get the binnacle working with backlights he's bypassed something or rewiring something and it was complicated to do it so it works with the DRL's... Nee bother. They didn't work quite right anyway.

Volvo Sit:Rep

New clocks are in, backlights are working splendidly BUT, Rev counter keeps dropping off and fluctuating and then doesnt work at all and then comes back to life! Speedo doesnt work at all - Using a gps one on my phone for now!

Fuel gauge still broken, Temp gauge couldnt be more perfect though!!

We now have a full MOT.

Smart phone and free GPS speedo app?

Thats what I'm using at the mo, though I'm likely to forget to put it on hence why I want something solid in the car that comes on with the key!

Plus the battery on my phone, is, shite!

Lol

Theres a good app called Speedomoeter would you believe but the ads are annoying - not sure how much it is to buy!

Plus its killing my phones battery.

Ooh, very nice. Good luck finding the bits of trim though!

There's a breaker on the North bound carriageway of the A1 near St Neots who has a ton of volvos :)

We've got Volvo Jim up here, near Slamannan. He's a bit of a cunt though, allegedly*, so maybe a camping trip to Cambs might be in order.

All done costs squared away.

Grand Total: £200.

Not bad since they spent most of the day messing about with wiring etc.

It's easy on these, almost as easy as a Ford Pinto engine! I need to get it done really, and fit my new undertray/splash shield thingy at the same time.

Next dry day I get...

Mine was missing since I got the car, all the screws to attach it have sheared off too. Should make fitting the new one even more fun*.

Do you find you get a lot of wind under the front of the car without it?

My car feels like all the air rushing under the car, worse on motorways, gets trapped under the front end which feels like it's trying to lift the front end up! It's not dangerous but it feels odd like that's what's happening.

I'm sure it's the undertray missing that's doing it, stopping the air flow deflecting away under the car.

The garage had a spot of bother with mine: apparently the marks didn't want to line up to start with, but they got it eventually. Not helped that it's the one tight space in that engine bay, it being a/c and turbo with the separate gearbox oil cooler.

Glad this is progressing.

As for interior plastics, I was horrified when I got my first Volvo, a 740 2.3 GLE estate. The interior plastics made Kinder Egg toys look like Brunel had designed them. Flaky as hell, and this coming from a Citroen owner! I've never encountered interior plastics that brittle. It rattled like snails in a washing machine as you drove along. Awful. Seemed to totally go against the otherwise robust feel of the car. I presume they made the speedo clock gears out of the same plastic.

They are a nightmare for plastic. You've got to be so so careful taking the interiors apart in these as the slightest knock or prising etc will just shatter the plastic. Mines been a ball ache as I've had to take it apart a few times so far. I think old age has made them worse for it tbh but god knows what sort of plastic it is, I've never known anything else like it.

Even the shittiest motorbike fairings aren't as obviously brittle as this stuff. Sure it's got the recycling code for ABS, and acronitrile butadeine styrene is well known for it. Makes nice rigid mouldings, doesn't last.

My excuse for the constant rattles and buzzes is TADTS, there's nothing else to say. Later plastics on the P80s onwards did get better.

Must admit, mine doesn't rattle much at all. It's dead quiet inside really for such an old car. Mind you the mileage is low on mine so maybe it's still fairly 'tight' and solid?

The plastics though, I'm half tempted to wear some safety glasses or goggles next time I work on the interior incase it shatters and pebble dashes my face in shards of sharp plastic!
