Gearbox is out, and there is some* obvious damage.

Fuck knows how it made it up the road.

Anyway, the clutch apparently looks decent and recent..

What it shows is that a box designed for 170hp will run in a totally fucked manner for a long time when running 50hp or less through it.

Transmission is often well over engineered for the typical load in order to survive the GLF Crail death blast.

Glad the little beast is getting a chance to run free in the future.

Reckon it might not have been refilled properly after a clutch job?

Potentially, but I never spoke to the previous owner..

All I know is that hole likely explains a lot of the oil in the bottom of the engine bay

I can assure you it's had the full 170bhp a fair bit since I got it:)

And it shall continue to do so;)

I wouldn’t say the jc5 box in the clio is over engineered

As I understand it the 130 in "jc5-130" refers to how often the box is expected to be replaced

That hole looks like it's fractured from the inside out, it's probably consequential damage from loose teeth rattling about rather than the original cause.

Aye it's had a good lamp from something doing many many rpm

After the lack of delivery in the first part of this thread (the aborted blue 172 collection) I feel it is appropriate to provide the added value* of a secondary collection thread..

Step one abandon 320 in work carpark

Step two admire the variety of vehicular shite available for perusal

Initial test drive shows much more health in the power transfer areas.

In short it GLF!

However, the traction control light comes on the first time you brake.

Brake switch is suspected

So I arrived at the top secret Clio Lab-

Looked at the gubbed bits

Looked at the spinning sunflower yellow 172 ph1

And took my car out for a drive.

Upon test driving, two things were notes:

1. It pulls fucking well for what it is - no bangs or thumps

2. The traction control light came on, indicating a fault.

We did some preliminary tests, and proved that the ABS and the brake light switch worked ok.

We rounded it down to the steering wheel angle sensor. Yes, really!

Dropping the subframe can alter the sensors perception of "centred" as the column alters angle

Removing the airbag and wheel allows you to recentre the sensor.

Result was - no t/c light on:)

Extensive* testing revealed the TC worked as intended as did ABS.

Confident in the clio's abilities, I decided to break for home.

It's actually quite a nice steer.

After 39 miles I decided it could be rewarded by getting a tank of fuel

As you can see, I was taking it easy

post-17572-0-30439500-1510349956_thumb.jpg

It managed to do 439 miles since I got it, and returned 35.75 mpg with a superfucked gearbox.

I am home in one piece and pretty pleased

Is the fuel sender broken?

Nup, picture was taken before the refill. It's up at the top now..

Decided to check under it this morning, and wind the guy who fitted the box up;)

Was it a recon box that was fitted? It’ll probably dribble a tiny bit mines always done it. It leaks more from the sump than the box though but considering it’s a subframe off job to change that I prefer the 6 monthly top ups

YA BASS!!

To ease this into fleet duty, I took it a trundle for some light haulage..

Could do with new rear shocks though..
