Mercedes Benz W202 C Klasse. Jerk off.

Hey.

Posted this on the eBay thread a fortnight ago and, because it's still there, I went to have a look. It would be with a view to taking the strain off my Avensis on the 100 mile daily commute.

I've never seen one this tidy in recent times. Wheel arches are perfect, paint all there. Just a tiny bit of blistering starting where the aerial is.

Only concern is it jerks when changing gear. Like a shunt from behind.

Obviously we start with the cheap stuff like ATF change but, after that, where next?

It's a nice honest car. Misery spec which needs its diesel badges returning to the boot.

Thoughts?

The old man's w202 did the same, it gradually got worse over the period owned(101k to 165k); I nagged him to get the oil changed but he never did and the box never exploded.

Ooof that's lovely that is

Looks great! Could it be some shunt from the drivetrain? There are a few rubber couplings in and around the propshaft that may be knackered.

Is it 4 or 5 cylinder? 200s and 220s aren't as bad as you'd think; a non turbo 250s no quicker but makes a nicer noise

I had an L reg 190e, this is just 5 months newer being a '94 L.

There are literally no other early diesels for sale to either compare against or to use in negotiations. The transmission felt strong, just the very definite feeling of changing gear every time. Turning circle is as hilarious as the 190 and it's in nice nick.

But the drivers mirror didn't want to move, the trans could be on its way out and selling it again for anywhere near the asking will be tricky.

I may just make an offer - acknowledge it's low - explain why - and ask them to keep my details if it sticks. Who knows.

220 NA Derv.

It was exactly what I was expecting tbh.

I think those early Merc autoboxes are pretty bullet proof. I'm sure an expert will be along in due course to say yay/ nay. Only thing I have had experience of is serious rot where the front lower arms bolt onto. The car in question pulled the bolt through the sub frame

Oh, and the seats are very firm !

I will offer my opinion on these fine old cars. On that year, it will be a 4 speed auto, the 5 speed auto came around 1997/98 on these. These are pretty bullet proof if looked after, they also wear their mileage well.

They drive good & look good aswell, although the C180 was not the fastest. Spec on these was pretty miserly, as per Mercedes at that time (1993,Everything was an option pretty much Apart from Drivers Airbag) But, they are the last properly built Mercedes, as per the W124. & W201 190...Mercedes from 2000 onwards went some what down hill quality wise for Mercedes.

The seats are comfy on long journeys, if it has cruise control, Mercedes Cruise control is excellent to use & easy to use as well, None of this hold a button down & press another button Shit, Just a Simple Stalk.

The Mercedes Foot brake as well, I personally like it once you are used to it.

Body wise, rust on these usually not as bad as it looks, usually it's just surface rust once stripped back. Although, As these are getting on a bit now, it is obviously worth checking it out underneath.

Easy enough to Maintain as well.

Overall, that looks a tidy old thing. Mileage is Super Low for it's age....I say buy it .  :-)

Not sure about that, Mercedes started using their water based paint on W202s, and we all know the results...

MOT history suggests it had a little weld up this year but, as I've got so many cars on atm, I forgot to check the MOT history whilst there and then climb underneath.  From what I gather, the owner lived in Spain during the winter when the car was garaged - then came home in the 'summer' we have and used the car then.  Hence nice condition and low mileage.  It certainly stacks up, but a pisser it's had to have a tickle already.  Hopefully not just plated for MOT.

It's smart, it's not a 190e, but I'm quietly hopeful you now get a better C Class for £1000 than a 190e.

I will think about it over the next day or so.  It ticks a lot of boxes.

Here's a little video walk around. It's smashing eh? The gingercators just make it and red, despite its obviousness, is quite an unusual choice. I've certainly not seen one in anything other than silver, gold or rosewood for ages.

Yeah, many well-thought-out*, green* solutions were introduced by MB in the 1990s. Like their excellent* "bio-degradable wiring".

I haven't seen a C-Class that good since the late 1990s. I'd buy it :)

Aye, all the bad ones rotted out about 10 years ago. Went to view a 250TD Elegance with Old Man to replace his 190E 1.8 that'd HGF'd around that time, and it was a pig. Every body panel had loads of blistering around all the edges on the panels. They all disappeared overnight not long after.
