ruffgeezer Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I can bring the one from work just in case if you like. We have the rad protection plate, engine stand and possibly other bits we may need. Is anyone attending who is parting with a mig welder or any angle grinders?
dollywobbler Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 Torque wrench might be an idea too. Shows positive thinking! Six-cylinder 1
Six-cylinder Posted September 1, 2017 Author Posted September 1, 2017 Torque wrench might be an idea too. Shows positive thinking! Good point my Torque wrench fell apart and I have never trusted it since.
beko1987 Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I have a silverline one I bought to do the meriva cambelt with and never used if you want me to bring it? Or we could just guess which is prob all it will do...
richardmorris Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I have a torque wrench. Will probably come up Saturday for the day.

We have the rad protection plate, engine stand and possibly other bits we may need. Is anyone attending who is parting with a mig welder or any angle grinders? If you can return the parts to work without a fuss then anything you bring might speed the job along thanks. Looking at the LNA engine it looks very much that the timing chest gasket is in the head set? The rad was out of the LNA when I bought it so we put it in later. I have an engine stand but no mounting bolts spacers etc.

Is anyone attending who is parting with a mig welder or any angle grinders?Got a spare angle grinder sitting in shed doing nothing. Do you want it RG?
Six-cylinder Posted September 1, 2017 Author Posted September 1, 2017 primary Shaft bush if we can find one. Sorry I am still not sure what I am looking for, please can you help me identify it?
Stanky Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I have a torque wrench I'm happy to bring along. I think its a decent one, though I've never used it in anger. It was given to me but isn't very old. Any other tools needed?
dollywobbler Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 BORING POST. Can I suggest someone project manages this? I've seen people come together to do this sort of thing before, but it really needs one or two to people to focus on it and keep it ticking along, while other people get distracted, dash off, drive tractors etc. Just needs one or two folk to gently chivy along and request folk muck in where needed. Clearly, you can't have too many people involved at any one time anyway, especially while the engine is still in. I'm happy to do some chivying myself on the Sunday. Can I further suggest lots of containers for bolts and things? Possibly some masking tape and a marker pen for making notes. If folk are all mucking in, it means the person putting something back together might not be the one who took it apart. Maybe bits of cardboard box that bolts can be shoved in and labelled up? Given that the work is taking place in a field, a magnet might not be a bad idea... oldcars, Six-cylinder, John F and 1 other 4
richardmorris Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I have loads of plastic boxes I can bring from work. Plus cardboard boxes if needed. Someone say now, and I'll start saving them up this week. Oh, do any gardeners amongst you need any vermiculite for potting up? I have about 1 cubic metres at the moment to get rid of.
Uncle Jimmy Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 I'd like to attend a meet some day; when the aquatic Saab is on the road but temperamental. Joloke 1
ruffgeezer Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Got a spare angle grinder sitting in shed doing nothing. Do you want it RG?That'd be great thanks!

However I was not going to give him a posh tittle like "project manager", in case he wanted a fat salary and a company car!
beko1987 Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 I can card up bolts if you like? I do it with every vacuum project, so am used to it! Will need a flat packed box, I can probably bring one Six-cylinder 1
ruffgeezer Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 I have never done a headgasket on one of these, and it is no small task, through work I have access to a lot of information through work. I thought if necessary we could whip the lump out and I'd take it to work and do the headgasket there. The concern is this from JohnK; re head gasket failureIn hindsight I think it was using water when I got it from hairnet as there were water bottles in the car, he's probably been on top of levels and kept it at bayNegligence on my part (I didn't use it loads) has allowed the water level to get too low and it started puffing out shitloads of white smoke one day. Once stopped it really struggled to re-startChecking expansion bottle it was all emulsified and has obviously leaked through the expansion cap as there were stains down the expansion bottle, with cap off the water/oil mix was right to the top of the expansion bottle It really depends on if it has warped the head... I was rather hoping ruffgeezer would lead the job as he has the knowledge and experience I lack. However I was not going to give him a posh tittle like "project manager", in case he wanted a fat salary and a company car! I'd settle for a company car from the 6cyl fleet The stand I refer to is specific for this sort of engine, so hopefully it will help. Also I went for a recce of the visa in my local breakers today, it's reg B558awl and it has most of the engine in it, notable missing bits were the oil filter and the fuel pump. I did notice that the bootlid is in reasonable nick on it though. Six-cylinder 1
ruffgeezer Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 We got a roll call for this then? Are we actually going to attempt this? Chris I presume we look after ourselves foodwise? Should I be packing my camping stove etc? beko1987 1
beko1987 Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 I was going to bring my stove, kettle etc, swing by tesco on the way over. Anyone bringing a BBQ or something? Roll call? 1 - Ruffgeezer2 - Beko1987 (Fri Sat and sun)
dollywobbler Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Sorry, having looked at logistics for next weekend, we are going to have to pull out. Annoying, but sensible.
Six-cylinder Posted September 4, 2017 Author Posted September 4, 2017 Chris I presume we look after ourselves foodwise? Should I be packing my camping stove etc? We have a small gas stove for the kettle and have tea and coffee, sugar and milk. Food wise it is provide your own, Tesco 3 miles away, Chinese, Indian and fish & Chips 3 miles away. McDonald, KFC 7 1/2 miles. Nothing in walking distance but every restaurant you can think of in Milton Keynes less than 10 miles away. beko1987 1

Talbot Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Having not sat in a field and talked shite with likeminded petrolheads for many years now, I am desperately trying to work out how I can wangle even half-a-day away from home to pop in for this. If it happens at all, it will most likely be friday. what's a 200 mile round trip to sit in a field and hit things with hammers? Sounds like bliss. mat_the_cat 1
beko1987 Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 As I'm quite local so don't have to drag shit around the country, want me to bring my jack and axle stands so we have spares? I'll bring my Mish mash of tools too if you want, and my collection of carpet tiles for kneeling on! It'll all have to be turfed out of my car for me to sleep in it though, but I'm sure Chris has a few dry sheds I can pop them in... Heidel_Kakao 1

I would prefer not to be the only person sleeping in a field however irrational that sounds lol, though I will have the dogs to keep me company in any event.

dollywobbler Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I can confirm that it's a remarkably pleasant field in which to sleep on your own. Just don't get stuck... chaseracer, Heidel_Kakao and Six-cylinder 3
