The Epic Austrian owned R16 from Germany doing French things in a Parallel Universe near England Saga

Sadly not all is well.

There are two recurring issues that will need addressing once and for all.

1. If not used for a while, air enters the cooling system. So every time the car is used after a few days of not being used, the system must be bled before the journey commences. Which is annoying, because it's quite a ritual on these. It's also annoying. Which means it's also onerous and inconvenient. And tedious. Also, when I bled it Wednesday to drive to the NPH MKII, one of the plastic bleed valves decided to split after merely 52 years going through a trillionteen warmup and cooling down cycles. Which is seriously shit.

2. The RH headlight keeps playing up. Which means, the car is not legal to drive on public roads. Hitherto any effort to address the issue has only yielded intermittent success. Or failure, depending on your outlook. This kind of behaviour would befit the windscreen wipers, which only know one speed, namely torrential downpour, but not a headlight.  Hence this must be properly addressed once and for all, because I do not wish to become a serial offending bloody migrant soon finding himself on the deportation list.

Bulbs were changed.

A headlight relay was installed.

Connectors were changed.

Wiring was checked.

After each such effort, the headlight works a treat, then does a Lucas, then can only be coaxed into glimmering dimly.

Therefore a concerted GGG repair* effort** is scheduled for tomorrow.

Stay tuned to witness a disaster unfold in this spot shortly.

When are you going to buy proper headlight bulbs?

I wonder what colour bulbs this forum would recommend to a friend of mine. Since there are some, who have the moral high ground here, it really depends on whether one is a yellow bulber, or a white bulber, because they can decide who is a cunt and subsequently should leave the forum. Since I'm obviously a cunt because I'm a yellow bulber, post no original content and shit on stupid competitions this forum was thankfully void of until recently, I'm on the go to Auschwitz list now. God be thanked there are no black bulbs, because that would be controversial. There are, however, blue bulbs, which could offend people who like Avatar, which is likely also my fucking fault.

Besides, when would you, sir, be available for liquid refreshments one of these Months?

I really miss you.

Well, I can't see the pic PShome posted.

Non TX R16s came with two flavours of bulbs, like pretty much any car back then that spanned the period when the industry went from Bilux (P45t) to H4 (P43t).

I asked the question, because many upgraded their Bilux era cars to H4 by fitting later headlights. Only the H4 type have asymmetric dipped beam.

If you have Bilux (P45t), you need these:

Alternatively, if you have the latter, you could use regular H4 bulbs and the covers Asimo posted.

Now, the normal Bilux P45t are non halogen and thus a bit shit. However, halogen upgrades exist and it is these I have in my car.

Since I never post any original content, I take the liberty to continue with my usual unoriginal one.

An expansion bottle was removed from the car. It wasn't appetising.

47112878581_52635994b2_b.jpg

I also finally wanted to tidy up this array of mismatched rocker cover hold down nuts.

47112874621_a2de8da6de_b.jpg

I thus removed the aero filter box.
Not sure whether I made another unoriginal post about the starting from cold problems when the car has been sitting for a few days?
Well, your air filter element apparently being frequently on fire is an indicator that not all is right.

47112870611_da49a7015e_b.jpg

Maybe a choke lever that isn't really connected to anything could remotely have something to do with it?

47112864891_d3279bfe10_b.jpg

So I reattached it and low and behold.

Choke pulled out:

Choke flaps closed:

Choke pushed in:

Choke flaps open:

Again?

Okay.

Back to the cooling system.

In this repost of someone else's for sale thread, I show you how I fixed the split bleed valve.

On top in the following picture you see the broken valve.

Underneath is solution A, the preferred one. It's just a 10mm (for Squire Dawson, that's 0 lea, 0 mi, 0 fur, 0 rod, 0 yd, 0 ft, 25/64 in and no, I can't be arsed to also state it in Royal Barley Grains) brass t piece and my idea is to cut a thread into the top branch and insert a bolt.

Underneath that is plan B, intended if solution A won't work. Yes, it's a bit overengineered, but that's just how unoriginal I am.

Underneath that is plan C, if everything else fails, just sod a bleeding valve altogether and bleed the system by pulling a hose off the straight connector.

Amazingly, solution A works.

A bit of a collar is required to serve as the sealing surface.

47112817501_c71e4f6b7a_b.jpg

It needs a bit of smoothening and you can see the intended bolt and o ring in this pic.

Looks good.

Fits well:

Note reusage of knackered jubilee clips, a hallmark of shitism.

FFS Junkman, a whole post consisting of unoriginal reposted eBay links? HOW COULD YOU!

Anyway, onwards and downwards with this repost of something.

It doesn't help your coolant equilibrium, if the hosepipe inside the expansion bottle is so swollen and limp, that it slides off and losely swims in said bottle.

46389104614_8b3d4df0c5_b.jpg

Now, I consider this a genuine defect, something I find rather confidence inspiring. As opposed to disassembling something, finding nothing, putting it back together and it miraculously works afterwards.

So I replaced the hosepipe with an ex Rover P6 V8 one I had still kicking about.

46198909655_d68efb892c_b.jpg

And yes, I cut it so it is a couple of mm shy of the bottom of the vase, because I'm a cunt, but not stupid.

Then it was time to bleed the bleeding cooling system.

For this, I roughly copied a Renault 16 special tool, because I'm unoriginal.

46198902925_328bda497f_b.jpg

Okay, it doesn't really look anything like the Renault R16 special tool, but still.

This tool is used to squish two hoses during the bleed process.

The air cleaner box was refitted using original Renault items.

47112782011_d5354cd7ca_b.jpg

This was dumped into the coolant without a glimpse at the instructions, because I was instructed to do so.

46389092554_d9ce364fc6_b.jpg

And yes, the system bled like a dream.
