The Epic Austrian owned R16 from Germany doing French things in a Parallel Universe near England Saga

No, I'm just not willing to do it for the smaller pack.

This is exactly the conversation I’ve been having with a lass at work this week re her contract renewal.

KNOW YOUR WORTH.

Guys, it's very noticeable that you don't live in the parallel Universe of R16 ownership.

Not only are those shims highly sophisticated, no, there are also early and late types.

Mine sure enough requires the early type, with the large inner diameter, which are very delicate.

In less hotel related news, the new fanbelt actually makes the entire car run smoother, who would have thought?

Another side effect is that the water now actually gets pumped around, which means the heater is even better.

Yes, an R16 can serve as an impromptu sauna.

On the down side, I'm afraid the tension is too high, due to lack of shims, which btw. aren't available anywhere.

I only hope it will survive the 200 mile trip home tomorrow.

Could you get a pile of M8 flat washers to temporarily space out the pulley sections? Just a suggestion... heck of a pull on the water pump bearings otherwise.

M6 more likely and yes, it crossed my mind.

You do realise how quickly these temporary solutions become permanent?

There's no fanbelt there as there is no fan driven by that v-belt  :-P

I see it is the camshaft to waterpump belt, rather than the waterpump to dynamo/alternator

Blah, blah, blah.

drawing says 5 inside, 1 outside. Two part numbers 06 07 970 200 / 06 08 160 200, probably 1 thick, 1 thin. Arrange the stack as necessary.

Later cars have fixed pulley and "normal" tensioning mech?

So question is: How thick? Buy slab of beer. Tin snips and punch and keep drinking cans until sufficient shims made.

Yep, that's pretty much the result of my research as well.

Real World says as many inside that the fanbelt is snug, rest go outside.

Sadly this can't be rigged up tomorrow between when I finish work and me jumping into my car to drive home,

since I can't wait to leave a trail of dust between here and Oop Narf.

Oh, and I keep calling it a fanbelt just to piss you off.

...... you've still got that one Green Flag call out left before they cancel your membership.

Uh uh. I know what you're thinking. Did he call us out six times or only five? Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself...... you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?"

Home achieverated. WGC to Civilisation in 6.5 hours with not a foot of motorway.

2 hours just to get out of that shithole Darn Sarf. All well and good past Beddfedd.

Kettering void of signposts, except for some to such metropoles as Oakham, Rockingham,

and some other dreary dumps I've never heard of, thus some lost gettage was had.

Car still runs fine, but has developed an intermittent knocking sound from the upper front of the engine.

Not good news. Something's fucked.

Will investigate tomorrow and report.

I've killed fuck all and you are a meringue.

Just one washer on each stud to space the two discs was enough to make everything perfect.

The car is running beautifully and all untoward noises went away.

I have conclusively proven on many occasions that 50 year old cars are perfectly suitable as everyday drivers.

I must try something older next.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Driving, or anything for that matter, south of the North is shit.

Now when are you buying a Riley RM?

Posted

There's one for sale in Lytham, with Rover 2000TC running gear...

Last owner bought this car over 50 years ago and being a highly qualified Engineer upgraded and modified it for reliable long-distance touring.

That's the exact opposite of what I'm looking for.

Hmmmm...

For the second time, it refused to start without a jump yesterday after NPH steakage.

We did some ad hoc measurage with a DVM and there were a measly 12.2 Volts.

On the way home, everything was rather dim, the indicators worked not at all, or with a ten second interval

and the ciggy lighter took ages to get hot.

So I tried to investigate today. I wiggled all the wires to see whther there is a bad contact - no fault found.

Hit the alternator with a hammer for good measure.

The car again needed a jump start, but it's charging 13.9V on tickover and close to 15V when revved a bit.

Wotz Rong?

Nothing is wrong. French car, just wait for self healing process to complete and do not interfere by attempting to fix it.

  1. Check earths - especially engine.

Check battery terminals.

Check alternator connections.

Check alternator bulb lights.

Possibly regulator pack.

Battermary is borked.

Can't find anything wrong with the charging system, every reading is according to spec.

Car restarts immediately after being shut off for a minute or so.

Car won't restart if sat for half an hour.

It does sound like the battery is knackered.
