Seats wanted.... With reasons why now added. 😊

Am looking to replace the front seats in the Oldsmobile. Currently a strange set up (for the UK) of two independent seats that resemble a bench seat with seating for three across the front... Drivers seat being bigger and kinda spreads across.

Only two seat mountings.

Both are a tad manky and am looking to change to two independent bucket type seats. Preferably in black velour or leather. Manual adjustment only. If anyone is breaking a car that may have suitable seats then am interested!

Ta!

Replace Oldsmobile seats?????????

Have you lost ALL your marbles man?  What can you possibly replace them with, except more Oldsmobile seats?  Do you WANT to reduce your comfort level that much?  Just fling a blanket over them, job done.

A Mexican blanket, of course. Go full hot rod, get some moondiscs too.

When I had my Chrysler 300, I desperately wanted a bench seat and column mounted gear selector, no idea why. Probably the same reason I used to put it into park too soon , so as to make the car rock as I got out, just like Frank Cannon, Steve McGarret and Dirty Harry did with their 70's barges.

To throw away a bench ( or semi bench setup) is worse than painting it matt black, but if you must, what about some red leather 156 seats, nice contrast to the black.

Most yanks I've seen have come from the factory looking like they had an old velour chesterfield chopped up to fit in, so why not do that?

I know I know....

The truth is that the original seats are no longer very comfortable at all. Gone baggy and the springs/foam inside has collapsed somehow. You sort of sit leaning to the left! Would bring on sciatica and or backache in no time.

Even with a Mexican blanket!

Excuses excuses!

Still, I suppose Omega seats kind of keep it within the GM family.

You may remember me mentioning that I used to have a Chevy Lumina, which is basically the same car as the Cutlass.  That was very comfy indeed.  Have you joined the AACNW yet?  Someone there might be breaking something suitable.

Excuses indeed Eddy....

No, I haven't joined the AACNW as yet.. I may never do actually. Though have considered it. I am fairly rubbish when it comes to owners clubs. Have joined a couple of them in the past, but never actually enjoyed going! Just couldn't get into the scene somehow. Almost always wanting to leave within an hour of getting to any event or meet. Maybe I am just wierd!

I enjoy repairing/restoring/modifying my cars at home. Using this place for support and general enjoyment of my hobby really. Not into ride outs/meets for whatever reason!

The Oldsmobile is being restored/repaired on a budget (as am skint!) and the RetroRides approach is alluring. Done on a budget, my own take on the outcome, but keeping the Olds useable and tasteful as far as possible. Plenty of older tatty original USA cars over here so am kinda hoping to create something a bit different, but clearly American with personal touches....

If that makes sense?

Went that route with the Mercury. A full on restoration would have cost way more than it would ever be worth. Hence turning it into a NYPD cop car replica. It sold easily as such, got invited to take part in last years Lytham club day vehicle parade and is now in a museum devoted to emergency vehicles! So a good outcome IMHO. As a standard car none of the above would have occurred.

The Oldsmobile won't be a cop car replica. It doesn't suit it. However when finished it will hopefully be very 'different' from the £100 shonker it started out as when it got here! 😄

Gratuitous pic of the Mercury in the parade...

I'm very much the same Btb. I very rarely go to shows or events, I've never shown any of my cars and probably never will. It just doesn't appeal for some reason. I just like working on the cars and driving them for my own enjoyment.

Is it worth asking for seats on ovalchat? There's bound to be some old yanks being broken for racing over there.

I agree that a tatty '90s American car over here doesn't really have any presence, unless it's a land barge like a Cadillac, or a Caprice/Roadmaster. For what it is, it blends in slightly too well.

They just look boring and sort of unassuming, whereas a bit of satin black (and maybe a red scallop hehehe) just adds a little something. I see the appeal of having it both ways though - your decision at the end of the day!

Indeed so..

They just look meh in standard tatty format. The Mercury was the same. Just a tatty old car originally. Once Copped up (sic) it attracted attention. I took it out last summer and left it parked up on the beach car park whilst we took the dog a walk. When we got back the car park had turned into a car show, unbeknownst to me, it was planned, but I genuinely didn't know!

The Mercury had more people standing round it than the shiny MGB's and Porsche 911's that had rocked up meanwhile.

I was embarrassed, but secretly proud.

Have you even thought about an automotive trimmers? They can often breathe fresh life into even the most fubar of seats

Yes. I have thought about it and had quotes. Too expensive and not worth the cost really!

As mentioned, restoring a 1991 borked Oldsmobile Cutlass to original is not financially viable. Wouldn't be worth much after all the effort and cost. The headlining is also droopy and unsightly. A re trim on the interior would cost £££££s.

Hence the plan*

All things considered this car was only really fit for scrap when I bought it unseen. All very well folks saying it would be a crime to dump the seats/spray it black etc. In a way I agree, but in this case it was an unwanted and badly neglected car. Bought for £100. It will live again, albeit modified with a different interior and paintwork, but it will live.

It deserves it.

Edit. I also deserve one of Eddyramrods meat n tater pies.. Can collect or postage included? I need the inspiration. Lol.
