Truxx Factor and RWYB - Santa Pod

Went to this today, it was good to see a mix of cars out including some older stuff, and whoever was pairing stuff up was doing a good job of mixing old and new head to head - with some interesting results, given that little of the older stuff was standard.

This was quite amusing, it went up against a few things like new Golf GTIs and Subaru WRXOMGSTI. And killed them all, I think I saw it run 11.35. Why so quick?

Aaah right. Apparently he uses it for the shopping run, but "doesn't usually turn the nitrous on for that"

This was wonderful, I'm not sure you can get any more Autoshite Racing than a brown Sierra Estate with mismatched wheels. It got paired up with a new Dodge Challenger... commentator was like "Oh, this isn't really fair, I mean Challengers are pretty quick up the strip.."

The Sierra got there first. WORD TO YA MUTHA.

This was even quicker, with some sort of Toyota engine slung in the back. Saw it against a BMW M135i or something and it just murdered it. Here it is with a Mustang....

Which it beat with a 11.2 run

Here's the same Mustang up against a 205GTI

The Peugeot crossed the line about 2 seconds in the lead. I can only imagine Mustang-man went home in a proper mood and refused to talk about his day.

This was fun looking too

Sadly it popped a tyre on launch and just pootled up the track. Twin turbo apparently.

Other stuff

There were also tractors (not drag racing)

and trucks

That did race!

How tightly is that Cosworth engine stuffed in that reliant? MEGA

Yeah, but it was seriously well made, and very plush inside - electric windows, decent stereo, nice seats, carpet.

Reliant themselves did something similar with a 90bhp Cortina 1600E engine. They wanted to make a Kitten 1600 GT to complement the Scimitar GT and GTE but when management found out that the lads at the factory had been racing the prototype against a Scimitar GT and that it was faster they axed the project. This was in 1968, the MK1 Golf GTi didn't emerge until 1975... Imagine if Reliant had released a hot hatch more than half a decade before Volkswagen.

Great to see the brown Sierra given a new lease of life. It used to live near me, then got sold to someone who ripped the engine out and ended up on ebay in a bit of a sorry state. What's under the bonnet now?

Posted

No idea, there was never anyone around to ask and the bonnet was always down when I went into the pits.

I think people with new Mustangs and M135s forget that they aren't light. Same with those AMG A45s, the electronics might make you look like a driving god, but when you're facing off against something with serious power and light weight, you're gonna get found out.

For the same reasons, that lovely Transconti vs a modern truck down the strip would be interesting!

The Kitten appeared in 1975.

The car of the rumour would have been the Rebel GT.
