Junkman's Irish Climate Improvement Mission A Full Success! - Caution: P6 Series 1 V8 Porn!

If there aren't any ugly holes behind the pod made from the same stuff Harold Wilson's Herbert Wehner's pipes were fashined from

and the mod is easily reversible, I say you get the clock and I'll put it in.

However, as far as I know Rover's brainwindings meanwhile, they left off the stainless side capping off the instrument binnacle and borked the wood.

Also, once the interior is the correct colour, I want to put one of those original black steering wheels in it, PAS or not.

Although I'm not at all adverse to the facelift models, the G-planness of the Series 1s is delightful.

We all know that the P6 launch in 1963 was a sensation. It immediately went on to become Europe's first COTY of evah.

All P6s are great, but the Series 1 has a wonderful minimalist and timeless elegance. David Bache, I salute you!

This is flawless:

I have encouraged JM to remove the rev counter and install the 'floating' clock as above.

Definitely. It is a thing of beauty, the dash like that.

The man was a genuine genius. Too bad his tremendous talent was wasted at BL.

He was right up there with the best of Italy.

This is what he had in mind for a P6 facelift in 1970:

Lovley as S1 dashes are, they lack one feature that is fitted to the last of the Rover marque,my 75, which probably would be just as at home in a P6.

Along with Tom Karen and Bill Towns, David Bache has to be one of the best British-based industrial designers of the 20th Century. Too bad that he lost his job at BL over the positioning of the Series 2 Rover SD1's rear wiper.

Mike-Lewis-David-Bache-Spen-King-and-Gor

The men behind the P6 (and yes, the SD1, deliberately in brackets).

L to R Mike Lewis, David Bache, Spen King and Gordon Bashford.

Mike was the scientist of the bunch. A true intellectual of British proportions and probably the only one of the bunch Spen King looked up to.

David was the artist. Allegedly he had a quite colourful personality, a bit on the eccentric side.

Spen was the engineer. Few people know that he was an avid cyclist in his spare time. He was eventually killed in a freak cycling accident

when he was well into his 90s. I once found myself in a bidding frenzy over one of his bikes. Of course I lost in the end. I just can't win.

Apart from that, Spen was also a driving force behind Rover's turbine programme.

Gordon, his middle name was Cool, how cool is that? was the engineer who translated David's and Spen's spleens into doable designs.

After all, it only makes sense to design something, that can actually be produced.

These four men were able to create the P6 on a budget other car companies spent on their postal stamps!

Mark Gray, purveyor of fine P6 spares (if he is so inclined) in the Midlands, is the current curator of countless internal

documents and memorandi between the four, as well as their protocols of pitching the idea to the Wilkes brothers.

This makes for more interesting and funny reading than the latest Grisham novel.

How could they possibly push this through? Well, all of them were somehow related to the Wilkes brothers.

Quick question Mr Junkman, which i hope will settle my mind. I've been told by someone who knows my P6 from years ago that when it was restored the base frame was too far gone so they used his 1973 brown 2000 base frame instead and swapped all the parts over from my car.

Now all the chassis numbers match up under the bonnet and on the V5 and on the old original paperwork and everything looks legit, I've seen the reg of the donor car and thats been untaxed since 1995. Should i be concerned at all and would this put people off it or is that a pretty standard thing on these?

Despite I might come across like a bit of a shifty type, I have no experience in ringing cars.

Also, I don't quite understand what exactly you are asking.

The chassis number provides information about what type of Rover P6 it is.

If it matches the spec of the car, there is nothing to worry about.

If you provide me with your chassis number, I can look up what car it is supposed to be.

Sorry, that wasn't what i was implying, you seem to have a lot more experience with these cars than me so i thought you might have come across this before.

From what you're saying Trigger, I can't see why there'd be an issue, especially after this long.

Reshelling P6es is nothing new.

As I said, if the chassis number on the inner wing reflects the car you have, there is nothing to worry about.

As Junkman says I wouldn't think there is a problem! Loads of P6's have different shells. It could be a classic tax evasion scheme but it really doesn't matter now as all 73 cars are now tax exempt!

Wouldn't be easy to tell the difference between a 71 and 73 car??

There are 2 hidden number locations if you want to dig a bit deeper, one under the rear decker (chassis) and another on the boot lip (shell).

Info can be found here https://classicroverforum.net/index.php?threads/find-your-p6s-base-unit-number.31244/

Hope Jman doesn't ex communicate me for linking to his favourite forum on his thread!!

I seem to be the only one who prefers the series 2 cars, I think the plastic black grill is much better looking than the chrome.

Either way P6 ownage is for winners which ever car you have, enjoy the new car.

+ 1 for this. The dash on the series 2 is far better.

I'm still miffed that Gladys didn't see production:

I know there was the Zagato 2000, TCZ, P6BS, the P8, P9 and P10, but Gladys was the car.  A fastback coupe V8 on the P6 base unit.  Even now, 50 years later, just shut up and take my money.

The GGG® decided that Climate Improvement© activities shall be extened to an island west of England.

No, not this one:

Cuba-PeopletoPeople-Havana-masthead-6762

Absolutely no climate improvement required there.

Hence Ireland was selected and it's meanwhile achieved.

The first spottage has been had:

As you can see, The Climate is megashite.
So I did something about it.

That's pretty much all you can do here and let me tell you, it's not done enough.

Oh this thread is seriously firing up my P6 lust once more.

Good to see Gladys again too. When I got a sneaky peek at the new Collections Centre back in November 2015, I may have actually squealed a bit and yelled 'Gladys!' when I saw her. The PR lady looked rather confused...

Of course it's a Matra 530.

I expected anything for first shite spottage in Eire, but not this.

You seem to be not far from Mondello Park, scene of much day-long 2CV-related malarkey in the 90s and early noughties.

Was a hearth an optional extra?

That is a stunning interior - you wouldn't want to get out. The curved wood that goes from the dash into the doors has been shamelessly copied by Jag for the current XJ.

No, why would I use Google when I know my local area?? (and quite a lot of the 32 counties being a lorryist)
