Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD. Any good?

Just thought I'd ask you all about the Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD. Reason being there a tatty estate [ SW] for sale at the top of my road for £225 at a local garage.

It's been there for about 3 months now and doesn't look like it's had any interest so been checking online with the DVLA and it's got a Mot till August this year.

It had a 145,000 at the last Mot on a 53 plate in silver with dents in most panels but as I don't have much luck on that score I didn't think it matter but I'm sure it could be easily tidied up with a bit of scrap yard surgery etc If you wanted too.

I know Stilo's can suffer with electrical issues and none working speedometer plus subframes can rot out but I'm not too clued up on 'modern' Fiats or cars after 2000 mostly.

Is there anything else to look out for or should this just be avoided?

I may not bother yet but was just considering it as a possability depend how my cash flow is over the next few weeks etc but wanted to see what people of AS think.

A Diesel Estate tested for almost 7 months for less than the cost of a single PCP payment on a VW Polo?

Can't really see a lose lose; situation tbh, might be a bit naïve but can't see a local garage with presumably a reputation to keep intentionally selling a car they know to be duff for £225, I've had many a sub £300 motor from local establishments and always found that anyone who gave a toss about their reputation found it uneconomical to sell anything they knew to be shite for not much cash.

Runs and drives? Buy it. This is all.

I like the look of them. Friend at work had one and she loved it.

Do it.

£225? The engine alone is worth that. If it starts and runs fine then buy it. At that money though don't get drawn into ideas of 'restoration'. Spend the minimum to keep it going and bail at the sign of serious trouble.

Engine is a cracker . Bosch engine management the usual bah of wank . Loads of silly leccy issues but not many show stoppers .

I know someone who had two of these long term, no major problems with them. No worse than a Golf, maybe better.

I know someone with a 1.6 petrol which was flipping awful electrically wise. They have a bit of a reputation in this department.

However at £225 it's so cheap it's worth going for! Just if it starts giving any trouble, sack it off.

My OH had one for 2-3 years, I thought it was a great comfy car. We had some electrical problems, the air bag sensor mat in the passenger seat failed, found a guide on the fiat forum on how to replace it with a network of resistors so it always thinks someone is sitting in the seat. I also had to solder the airbag connector under the driver's seat. The boot release thought the boot was open all the time, I sorted this by fitting a tilt switch off a Pug 206. The rear axle bushes went and were a bit of a PITA to change. I fabricated a tool to draw them through after turning them down slightly on a lathe. (you're suppose to remove the axle and use a 12 ton press).

You can get a free copy of fiatecuscan to read any fault codes including airbag.

There was no rust of it, body or chassis whereas the 156 I had at the same time looked like an old tug boat underneath.

JTD is a great engine, my wife has a 147jtd. Cambelt is easy with good access and no special tools required except some RIBE spline bits.

Only issue in about a year has been a crank sensor - chucked a code, which I cleared, then it cut out once so I replaced the sensor, about £12 and easily accessible.

The £5 blue VAGCOM leads on eBay will work with multiecuscan for basic engine diagnostics.

We had a 3dr JTD a few years back. Engine was great, however loads of electircal faults, airbag light was always on & foiled me and an auto electrician, rear axle bushes went & were a dear do to sort out, interior not great...but for £225 I would.

Had a punto with the 1.9 jtd it just has a smaller turbo bolted and slightly different manafold.

Only problems I had were ,

An egr valve that clogged up/failed not sure how it was driven like a small italian car everyday

An injector that occasionally leaked derv, this pooled and smoked badly.

Dont know if the stilo has the same plumbing, but watch for metal coolant pipes at the front of the engine that rot from the outside.

Other than that, it was a good motor.

New member here , been lurking for a while but have just bought one of these for £325 seems ok so far, had it around a week. Mine needs a few little bits and bobs doing which i suppose is par for the course at this price and age range .

Thanks everyone for all your input and opinion's so far much appreciated !

Checked out the garage selling it online and they don't have the best reputiation so will need to be on my guard.

Hopefully I'll take a look next week as my brother just sold one of his cars which should hopefully be collected Saturday to make room before I commit to looking / buying any more as space is really tight for us.

I miss the days when I had four motors on my parents drive + with room to spare as it was easy to buy another motor when I saw a cheapy I liked. I think all four owed me less than £500 and the best bit was they were all legal. :-D

Had 5 at one point. My Talbot Samba Style 1st car. Fiat Uno 45s 2nd car. Fiat Uno 45 5dr. Renault 19 gtd hatch which I had free but had to have a new head. An a Renault extra 1.6 diesel which was brilliant, should have kept that one but sadly my parents divorce forced me to sell it along with the rest in time.
