question! has anyone ever taken a black cab round one of these courses/this course?

I figured with the 25ft turning circle and all that malarkey it would be quite fun to see how one would do LOL

or a Bond Mini car LOL!

Mini is a great shout. There is a guy who normally campaigns one and it is seriously quick round the course.

It's the cheapest Motorsport day out - don't delay.

Taxi would be shit as it is a) slow b ) very big.

Ideally for autotesting you need a smoll light car with quick off the line acceleration.

Someone was running a turbo car yesterday and he struggled as it kepts getting on and off boost meaning it was a challenge to drive.

I’d probs bring the MX5 (if the PAS fluid will all stay in one place), although once the Yugo is up and running that might be a laugh ???

Do you need a helmet or any equipment or is it just turn up and go for it?

No helmet.

Just car with mot and insurance. Plus a FIA licence - apply online.

I’ll sign up to see when the dates are and potter along!

Yugo would be a good shout!  Small, light, eager engine, you know you want to.  I still want to do it in something ridiculous...

It looks such a brilliant day out!! I was all set to road rally the mini, until my eldest came along but this seems perfect and a little less damaging on the car! Seems cheap too! Can't have a half Decent night out on the lash for less than that these days!!

I've got to have a crack at this at some point

Unfortunately the Snagglepuss K11 seemed much quicker than mine off the line when I had it... not sure why, maybe lighter? I think that one had the earlier K10 gearbox which maybe was geared lower, not sure

Holy Autotest Ressurection ..

Moving north of the border, I have had to join the local club - Saltaire Rally Club.

I have entered the next Autotest on 13th August in Errol.  It is on an airfield so should be a hoot!  If any one fancies coming to have a go it is £35 for a full day days fun!

The next one after this is 11th October

Winner overall was the guy in a G reg Astra.

As normal I didn't trouble the leaderboard in anyway!

I am thinking about having a go at the 3 sisters Autotest in December if anyone fancies that.

I really want to try Autotesting when I have the K11 taxed and insured. I see there is one Ross but do you normally need to be a member of a club or organisation to parktake?

  • The Moog changed the title to Navigation Rallies - shite cars going the speed limit!

Existing in the land where sausage is square, hangover cures are bright orange and it mostly rains, exciting times come in many forms.

I have signed up to my first navigation rally.

What is that I hear you ask ...

Well it is literally a rally (so driving cars, no placards here) where the focus is on the navigation (reading a map, like a paper TomTom.... You know like Waze.... No you can't ask siri) Screenshot_20240317-223531.png.38ad6c7880b210977f1a78add7b5cd89.png

Open to all.

Last night was the navigation rally.

What can I say but what a hoot.

For anyone who hasn't tried it, I highly recommend it.

The premise is simple - get from point A to point B within the speed limit.

The hurdles are that you get penalised for being too early, penalised for being late and penalised for approaching the checkpoint from the wrong direction.

Along the way there are signs with numbers or codes on them.  Miss these and guess what - you are penalised.

It's mostly B roads, in the dark and being Scotland it is flooded/rutted throughout.

The other cars were pretty much rally prepped with massive front lights

PXL_20240406_183656931.jpg.3df24a7dcbb853b7f4f237af58e52c2b.jpg

We took part in beginners category that got us a marked map

IMG_20240407_110751_860.jpg.ba806671c2baf38dd80daa31b57f12cc.jpgIMG_20240407_110751_882.jpg.a6b055d1a8b4d65227e09b3dce087ef7.jpg

If you go for Novice (next level up) these are the type of instructions you get

IMG_20240407_110751_782.jpg.5e8af7ddd6cb05178363b8eb55ee0571.jpgIMG_20240407_110751_811.jpg.6da2471110d659970bca0d01e734e80d.jpg

These have to be deciphered and plotted on the move.

Some of the rules

Screenshot_20240407-1411182.png.d70b832d3935718175b219a4e3c84f3e.pngScreenshot_20240407-1412222.png.a151d395934b560c47ac4f277b7dff61.pngScreenshot_20240407-141109.png.563933f9363f806d85570f0e989ad295.png

It's incredibly difficult to convey the fun that is had.  The first half took about 2 hours, in which time it is unrelenting. Navigator has by far the hardest job, being chucked about, trying to read a map, keep eyes open for signs and then watching the clock.

We finished back at HQ around midnight to a feast of rolls and cakes.

Managed to finish without breaking the Merc and still speaking!

My major issue this morning is that I fancy doing more in future but don't think the turbo Mx5 will cut it.  Might need to upgrade to more of a rally car.

The SDMC (Stonehaven and District Motor Club) put on 2 navigation rallies each year which I often do the PR work for or sometimes marshall. We always welcome people from other clubs or indeed anyone who wants to give it a go. Last autumn the club put on a training course for this, as a result we had 12 new people doing the Gropers Rally last weekend. We will probably put on another course this autumn if anyone in the area is interested in giving it a go. Post here or by PM if you want more info.

I was aware of this rally but was on a night out on Saturday so couldn't attend. A friend of mine is an ex driver/navigator so we plan on taking part at some point this year.

I used to do this in the late 90s and can agree how much of a buzz you get. Yes, the event is planned around an average speed of 30 mph but if you have 10 miles to do in 20 minutes that's all well and good. If you spend 15 minutes working out the clues then progress has to be made 👀

Weapons of choice back in the day were a MK2 Golf, my 205 1.9  GTi and my mates Puma. All absolutely perfect for the task of hustling down country lanes.

I was a much better driver than navigator but I was a very average driver at best.

The Kangoo would be perfect for this but I'd probably do the first event in the Focus with some driver aids to give myself a chance 👀🫣

I would probably be up for that - I think my club did a nav training last year and nothing is scheduled for this year.

Results are in ... Not troubling the podium any time soon

We missed a few boards which let us down.  Will know better for next time!

Not bad company to be in then !

One of the chaps I was chatting to after the event was saying he was on a run of weekends doing the rallies, his C2 was fully setup for targa.

That will be Dez Campbell he's a hard one to beat although Sundays autotest he was just pushed into second place,  you want to see him in his rally car christ can he pedal that little pug.

Like ive said before you should have a go at the berwick classic,  it's like autotesting on steriods  2 days dozens of tests and a loads of miles inbetween.  https://berwickmotorclub.co.uk/berwick-classic-rally/
