Peugeot 407 HDi, is ignorance bliss?

This is clearly a job for a Rover 75 - you'll probably get change from your £1000 too.

I would second the 406 over 407 argument, haven't driven a 407 but apparently the ride is much inferior to the superb 406, and comfort is important to you.  Cruise available on GTX and Exec, auto available although it is the relatively fragile AL4 French gearbox.  This look nice but is about £5/600 overpriced unfortunately

Have you considered the 607? Likely to be more comfy and have more extras and still be quite cheap

Any car at your budget will be a gamble though. At least if it's cheap it's one worth taking. Also, don't be afraid of big miles. In my experience it has little relation to reliability. My 406 is on 199k now and you wouldn't know it as it drives fine. It's the 90hp hdi engine. I get less than 40mpg though but this is mostly shorter journeys.

If you've got any teenage girls in your family who have no interest cars give them your money and tell them to buy you a Peugeot 407. This way it'll be 100% fine and give you years of happy service.

If you go out and buy one, check it out properly and look for all the usual faults it will blow up within 3 days.

HOLD THE FREAKIN PHONE, I have just had a mishap looking at this. Stretch your budget a little and be THE BOSS!!!!

Edit: forget that ^^ we've seen this vandalised one before.

The 3.6 V6 Engines alone are selling for £2500.

OH REALLY? CALL ME.

This is very true, it will last longer if they don't service it as well

Any more info on the earths?

Rear lights melt their earth pin and cause the lights to either not work or make the check control go mental telling you all of the rear bulbs are out one by one when you indicate, brake etc. Chopping the wiring loom and running a new earth from the chassis direct to the board inside the light sorts it 100%. Mine would quick flash the indicators like a bulb was out even though all 3 on each side were fine, for example.

Interior fan can completely pack up because of a broken earth wire - similar fix.

Had the same problem in my Punto and did the same fix!

I did look at 607s and I prefer them to the 407. However there seems to be a better choice of 407s available to buy.

Also most of them have the 2.2 HDi which I've heard is not as reliable as the 2.0. I won't even mention the 1.6's reputation

Is the 2.2 really much worse than the 2.0?

I've got a V70 Phase 1Tdi which I've put about 20,000 miles on over the last year and a bit, now on 155,000.  I've seen quite a few at 200,000 so figure there's still a few years left in it.

Mine has the manual gearbox and does a very repeatable 52mpg.  As for reliability, it seems to pass the MoT without much bother but last weekend I had to replace a headlight bulb.  Comfy too.

The 407 suffers from a 'reputation' but not much else. It's a decently built, comfy car that's generally reliable. Plan of action:

1. Buy a clean, well maintained 407 that drives well.

2. Maintain it, fix it when it needs it.

3. Don't fret, you could own an N47 2.0d engined BMW that WILL* go bang when** the chain snaps. They are not £1000 cars.

* There's no 'if' about it.

** See above ^

Oh, a mate of mine in Yorkshire (North-ish) has a 2003 ish 75 diesel Estate, silver, black leather, very clean and well maintained, £650.

No I haven't any pics but you know what they look like.

my v70 phase 1 tdi has just cleared 207,000 miles and feels fit for a good few more.

However, last night I bought a 406 hdi for a mate. I did lots of looking for it. There are a metric shitton of 406 hdi's with over 200K on out there. I drove the 184K one home last night and it felt like a new car compared to the volvo, and was soooooooo much comfier.

VAG 1.9 not reliable? There's on in the carpark right behind me with 180K on the clock.

My PD 100 is quite shit. Goes into limp mode at completely random intervals, probably a clogged turbo or some wank. Done an average of 11k a year in its life so far so it's not like it's been driven about town either. Only manages 55 MPG average and I do 450-600 miles a week, bit crap really as some others manage 60+.

90 BHP HDi engine is the best of the PSI direct injection bunch - no DMF no DPF on the RHY engines.

Oh, and they dont seem to suffer OMG HGF like the XU9D either.

Tsk... youngsters today. I was amazed that my XM managed over 30mpg on a long run as in many many years of driving I have probably averaged less than 24mpg. Never had a diesel mind you.

Be thankful for what you have got and don't go trying to save a few bob by buying an unknown quantity. Read a good book on how to drive economically and see if changing your driving style saves you any money before letting go of a car you know is good.

I think that's an urban legend, I've never had an XUD pop a head gasket.

The second half of this is very true. There is a saying that the most economical car to run is the one you already own. It's a known quantity, any new car is a gamble but I'm sure you know this, you just fancy a new car!

The first half of the above statement is also true in my case. I'd love 30mpg but I also love the sound of a V6.

I'm off now to go and fill it up again.

It's not an urban myth; my 306 TD was showing imminent signs of HGF when I traded it in. I've also seen an XUD Xantia with a cracked head.
