Oil filters

OE or pattern?

I am going to service the vectra soon. However, a bosch oil filter, even from autovaux, is a whopping £34.

For that price I can get a service kit from ebay - however they appear of unknown origin.

I know £34 is much cheaper than a new engine but how can that price be justified for a paper element?

I will see what my local factor can do.

Holy Moly.

I'd see what respected garages in the area would use.

I'm not tight when it comes to cars, but I got oil for £12, filter for £4, air filter for £6 and plugs for £10. Same price!

What engine is the vectra? I serviced a TiD saab the other day and the oil filter was less than a tenner.

No - just a paper element. My motor factor stocks mann stuff.

send me the reg number and I'll see what the trade club price is

I get the genuine part numbers, then visit a cross reference site, then have a poke nose round the usual places, ebay etc (also check ECP/CP4L) with the part numbers of makes i am happy with, if i find some on sale i'll often buy several if the car is a keeper.

Still have a couple of K&N's in stock for the Subaru (oddly enough Mann's don't fit very well, only a couple of threads before tight, nope), and picked up half a dozen Wix filters for the Landcruiser cos they was half price, big oil filter on the LC getting on for £20 for a genuine and around £14/16 for a good aftermarket.

Mann are good.

Jesus. Mann or Mahle are both top notch and should be a lot cheaper than that!

Spend what you save on more frequent oil changes and better oil.

I've had bad experiences with Crosland fuel filters, it's possible all their filters are of similar quality.

Definitely don't buy the full price dealer OE thing.

MANN are good, as others have said.

Yup, Reel Toyota ones cost me less than a tenner.

Just avoid Fram crap.

no problem not using genune  , but make sure its a good brand, have a search theres plenty of google posts showing how poor the really cheap ones can be

I bought a cheap oil filter for the Rav on ebay. It clearly had no non-return valve. I'm a bit wary of cheap shit now.

Carparts4less - Mann filter - £23, + 10% discount (WINTER10)

GSF - Bosch - £28, but they have 50% off everything (JAN50)

Id go with the Bosch from GSF, or sell the car because paying over £5 for an oil filter is ridiculous.

Thanks for that. Just nabbed a full set of filters and oil for the ZX from GSF for £20! A mixture of Mann and Purflux filters. Nice.

They normally have 50% off at weekends, if there is no 50% code GSF are very expensive.

Are Bosch filters made by Bosch?

Recently changed a Blue print filter for a Bosch one, the Bosch had more holes so more flow but that's as far as my investigation went. I have another Bosch filter in my garage so I can check where its come from if your that bothered.

I got a Crosland oil filter for the 850 because there wasn't a Mann one in stock. I had to wait ages for the oil light to go out in the mornings. On the plus side there was no spillage at all when I changed it because all the oil had drained back into the sump.

Lesson learned, but I can't help wondering how many of my old car's engines were actually ok and just had shit oil filters.
