After three years... 216SLi - 25/2 - behaving itself

Dont worry about the cambelt, One job at a time.

I would think the water pump is OK, but if it's been changed maybe the fault was there then.

I have tools, a compression tester and a little know how.

Compression test is not conclusive however as bad valves could cause the same reading.

Stalybridge is it? I could come if it helps, check comp, flush the rad, check the flow etc.

Don't want to tread on the old mans toes though I'm probably much older than him.

pm  me your address if you want me to come. Can do tomorrow (Wed) or Thurs morning.

Dont take the water pump off if its still on.

Would leave system empty overnight in case it freezes. or throw something over the bonnet.

Stalybridge indeed - if 3VOM doesn't reply to my PM or can't make it over I'll let you know. I need to go out shortly before 12 on Thursday though.

Old Man is in his late 60s!

The car's in one piece for now...

The parents have been discussing something, and it seems like if I get HGF diagnosed, then it seems I'm going to need some help. Old Man's had three hernias, and the most recent one was only sorted last month. Water pump, not sure, but if the head's coming off, then a spannering session is happening at chez Ghosty.

It'll have its day.

ETA: Do you not have a Haynes? I think I have one at home if not.

Just noticed this - no, I don't have a Haynes yet. Working off what odds and sods I know of the D series from Civics.

I have got the same engine and auto box fitted to my wifes old CRX and when i first got it it had been standing about and when it started getting some use the coolant was being pressurised and getting blown out of the rad overflow pipe on long runs which then led to low coolant and hot running.

20170117_153315_zpsazomecm2.jpg

I tracked my problem down to a clogged up cold start / idle speed control valve (metal dome shaped thing below throttle flap) and its pipes which sit under the throttle body and draw coolant off the inlet manifold.

The pipes to it were luke warm at best but after removing and cleaning the valve and pipes it all got nice and hot and sorted the poor circulation/pressurising problems.

It may be worth cutting the middle out of the original stat and refitting it then trying again to see how it goes that way you are less likely to have to chase out trapped air caused by the stat taking an age to open.

I guess being negative the car is 20 plus years old and the head gasket may just be degraded thru age and needs replacing which is a pleasant enough job.

If i wasn't down in Kent i would gladly pop around and have a look.

P.S the orange cam cover is not my doing honest..

Apologies to Ghosty for the thread hijack, but I may be taking ownership of a Civic with a 1.6 that looks very similar to that. Not sure when the cambelt was last done so I may want to do that at some point. How bad is it as a DIY job?

That's okay. They're certainly doable - a bit involved but not completely awful. Old Man's done at least one.

You need a specific cam locking tool though.

Yes I thought I recognised the photo.  In fact all those photo's are of Dugongs motors?

Try draining the system out, remove the radiator and back flush it with a hosepipe. Then do the same with the engine block. Just fire the water through everywhere you can in the opposite flow direction to what the coolant normally circulates.

If there's any silt or crud in it, it should start to dislodge it and wash it out.

Also, don't forget to set the heater to hot when your trying to bleed air out. If you don't you run the risk of getting an air lock in the heater matrix.

Flush the heater too if you do this, no point leaving shite in there that'll just go back into the system as soon as it runs.

Just spent 5 minutes looking for it before I remembered I gave it to phil_lihp when he got the dope head cast off.

He's got shot of that now so maybe worth a PM and see if he's done with the Haynes.

He is indeed. PM me your address Ghostman and I'll get it in the post to you.

Although I'm late to the game, here is my steaming eggsorst photo.

All Rovers do that, sir.

I can't help it, but OMGHGF on a Honda engined Rover makes me a tad PMSL.

Yo gang, listen up!

The Chompy_Rover is 90 mins from Manc, it's near Malham, so it's gonna be a four hour round trip minimum with spanner time but you're welcome to go up and raid it free of charge. Make a full day of it if you can.

It now looks like this:

I am in several thousand miles away just now, but please strip it for all you need (and more), pick it dry.

Under the bonnet, it's the same SOHC lump and auto box as yours, and completely undisturbed, other than me having the dizzy out for the (often troublesome) ignition module. BUT I bought a new replacement and put it back in place so I knew where it would be when I needed it. Take that and keep it in your glove box with a screwdriver, they fail without warning for a sudden FTP.

Here's the only under-bonnet pic I can find:

The car was running just fine and dandy 'til it ran out of juice in the field.

Feel free to nab the head, the whole lump, or take a sawn-off half-cut like the one I did for Bollox:

The rest will be going to frag shortly.

Nothing seems to be missing or broken ... mirror glasses aside.

I'm sure there's some mirrors inside, take the whole units, whatever you need.

In happier times:

My bro Will (explosive_cabbage) may be on hand to help, tractor available, I'll send you his number Ghosty, and I'll warn the family that I've invited you and the lads to do as you wish with it.

If you fancy taking the whole car to strip at your leisure, borrow my big trailer for a week or two, Will can help you lift it on.

All I ask is that you don't drop anything in the field that animals could injure themselves on (broken glass, shrapnel etc).

Fill yer boots!

 bloody hell, thanks Joe. PM received.

I'll have a look over the car today and work out if there's anything I need. I don't have any storage space for more than parts unfortunately so that might have an effect on what I can do.

Time to apply for a council lock up?

That's a fine offer indeed. I'd be having engine, box, driveshafts and rear light glasses as a minimum.

Only an hour and a half from me Malham, but I've got a tranny van to take for MOT on Friday, needs welding up for retest next week that I know about plus whatever else he finds, and I'm off to Spain soon.

See what today brings.

There's plenty of bits inside it too, lights, mirrors etc. It has helped out loads of Autoshite R8's over the years so many of the oft-failing items have gone, but there's a lot left. From memory, one or both of the CV joints are jiggered, but the driveshafts may be worth nabbing, they rust inside the rubber doughnut thing, on my white 216 I sheared one clean in half! New CV's can be found cheap enough.

There's no immediate rush to grab any bits you want, the red car will be there for at least another month, maybe two.

Mason the LS400 spent his first two mins every morning at 1800rpm. In November, he used to generate his own weather over the street.

Anyone know anything about the cooling system on D series? We're loooking at the heater/matrix for now.

Compression is fine, removed some silicone that was blocking the radiator overflow to the expansion tank. It's ??? for now.
