COLLECTED: Rover 75 (Dealer 'Launch' Spec)

Same scenario here.. belts were done 40k ago, but over 6 years. It'll now do 2 k a year maybe so I really could leave them for years. There seems to be a whole scaremongering culture about KV6s and cambelts and I don't really get it. They aren't that complex to do, plenty access and if you follow a few guidelines then no real issues, even without the tools, but the first thing said when mentioning a KV6 is " ooh, it needs belts, it's worthless". Just like a k series..". Has the head gasket been done?" Er, no because it hasn't gone. " Ooh, don't want it mate, these things do head gaskets every 30 miles unless it's had the land rover upgrade"

PISH.

I paid decent money for my 75, in 75 terms, cos it's the one I wanted. Servicing and upkeep is part and parcel of any car and if it needs done in my ownership, it'll get done. Then if it gets done, I know it's been done and not just written in the book and it'll be done with parts and fluids of my choosing. If it's not a keeper, and you are buying with a view to resale then understood, if it's a smoker, play cambelt roulette, If it is a keeper, at the prices these cars go for, buy the exact spec you want, bring it up to the standard you want and keep it there.

My tuppence worth.

It's a keeper. This is about as close to perfect spec. The only thing I'd really have loved is an OEW one with all the trimmings. But this will suit me just perfectly.

Time to try a deal.

The seller of the one with Y spokes is well known and respected in Rover circles. He should be able to do a deal on  getting belts done.

He doesn't seem so keen. I've pushed him on that already.

Bottom line is I want one and he has one. That puts him in the driving seat.

The belts as said are ok for 150000 miles in reality but lately including mine needed doing at the 6 year interval due to the waterpump and tensioner giving up. The actual belts are normally fine it's the tensioner and waterpump that can fail before

Is it possible to inspect the belts at all or are they very well hidden?

As I said on the previous page the belts having done only 39k would be the least of my worries.  (Did you see my reply, post #86 )

I would be more concerned about the cooling fan working and checking for any water leaks inside the car.

Can we ask how much his asking?

When I first got mine I took it down the local Rover friendly garage (British Legends) run by Steve Tyler well known in MGF and Rover cirlcles. I told him my W reg was on original belts expecting him to go into some kind of frenzy telling me not to drive the car until they are done, in fact he was very relaxed and didn't seem concerned, although I did have them done eventually for piece of mind.

Ah yes. Sorry.

£650. I think if I was there tonight with £600 then maybe. But who knows.

I don't mind the price. It's not making me uncomfortable. But the work will need to be done for my peace of mind, and be done well after "The Great Grenading 190e of 2016" incident.

Hopefully I can get this sewn up soon. And I can find someone to drag it up for me.

That 'launch spec' does look at good one, but those Y spoke alloys look like horrid Wilko wheel trims.

Well he's gone quiet on me. Furthermore, whilst we were chatting about coin earlier he was busily listing it for sale on a FB group. The last message I sent was 'please give me details for a deposit', and that was 5 hours ago.

So I think the search continues.

Probably just busy or away from his laptop/device on a Saturday evening.  Â£650 seems a very good price, there are many 75's out there for that money and more that have never had the belt change. And if its really a launch spec then I call bargain.

Here are 5x 15" crown alloys with tyres for £80  (centre caps are easily obtainable and probably a couple of quid each)

That's class. Everything i want in a 75, i guess it has power rear sunscreen, and personal line. Not only that but rare Y spokes. Good luck with it hope you get it.

Edit I see i'm the only one with love for the Y spokes

The Y spokes looked better in the brochure. In fact that's the first time I've ever seen them fitted to a car, thought they didn't actually exist in the wild.

An early, high spec, large engined 75 sure is a fine machine. Hope you get sorted, Borne!

Just spoken to the owner.  He is a very well respected Rover specialist, and was offered the car by a local gentleman who has had the car since late 1999.

It's definitely a launch car. Apparently, these were all Wedgewood

This car seems to be very well spec'd, even featuring the 'TV' and rear electric blind.

Unfortunately, the cigarette lighter and interior light don't work - so I'm out.

I might need some help to collect it from Worthing.  Anyone?

Great news. The cigar lighter might be a fuse.

As said the launch cars are a strange spec.

Both mine have parking sensors that were done at the dealerships.

My dads launch car doesn't have rear parking sensors.

I love the blind I call it the annoyance blind as if someone drives right up behind me I just press the button and it winds them up even more.

If they want to overtake be my guest.

That looks lovely!! Absolute bargain to find a launch in that condition.  Slightly jealous....  If I had room for another one it would be this!

Its a Chicken Dinner mate.

Ooh that's nice, it even has the television and electric blind.

I know he had an 800, but it just feels appropriate to saypost-20228-0-21112500-1483886158_thumb.jpg

Please can we have more pictures, especially of the interior?

Us radio anoraks have always felt that the natural progression for Partridge was a nice R75.  "The thinking man's BMW" etc.  In fact, the more you think about it - the more the casting of the Lexus seems strange.  The Insignia is almost perf....

and I've just bored myself.

Well bought, they really are a classy motor these things.

I tried to get a set off a scrapper recently but they had been sold. Love them.

Result that's lovely. Looks to be on dealer plates, hope you can get a dealer smiley for the back.

Wasn't it an i40 or Optima in Alpha Papa ?

Maybe a Rover 75, sponsored by a prestigious alternative classic car website would be good for the profile of someone in the great AP' s profession.

I think the Lexus coincided with Alan's mini midlife crisis when he 'III've gotta Girlfriend' and trying to impress other oiks at the BBC

Insurance sorted.  Limited miles with Peter Best comes in at £165.  That's a relief because Footman James wouldn't entertain it, and standard policies were coming in at £550.

Still can't sort out getting it.  Next day off is 29th January which is, frankly, not acceptable.  Currently getting quotes from Shiply, but if anyone fancies earning some cash moving it from Brighton to Watford please speak up.
