OMGFTP? MG ZR update.

Personally I can't see problem when used in the right circumstances. Wouldn't use it for a simple fix, but would use it to cure a difficult to seal housing or a duff pump seal on a beater.

There's a highly recommended specialist who's mobile and does them for about £300. He is an absolute unapologetic Rover licker too. Of the highest order.

That's worth knowing, I'll let her know about this if the other place doesn't work out. Not too far away either (bonus!)

Takes it away n comes back later?

When we had ours done in the Mgf he had a fresh head skimmed and ready to go so he just charges for a skim to the head he takes off you.

K seal should be a class A substance. 15 years in the clink for dealing in it.

OK, new update on this. Daughter's partner's mother (?) has contacted the seller (MG specialist) who told her the car had a new HG fitted 7 Months ago. He said she could drop the car off and borrow a Bubble while he had a look at it. Sounds pretty fair to me. Unfortunately when she went take the car over it failed to start (I have no details) so she has contacted him again and is awaiting a response.

Is it likely for the HG to fail again, have I diagnosed this in correctly? I understand that some muck would be left in the cooling system even after a HG change as it's so hard to clear out, but when I looked at it it really was like Chocolate milkshake in the header tank.

I'm afraid everything is delayed on this as I'm not a friend of hers so I'm waiting for updates by text from her. I've only met her the once.

Oh bum, so far but so near,  shame the blooming thing wouldn't start on the day.  It almost certainly wouldn't be losing lots of water and have these symptoms if done properly 7 months ago.

So do we  still think I'm right and it DOES have OMGHGF?

It could have gone again if it wasn't done properly.

If it was mine I'd start by draining the coolant, refilling with water and a brief drive (if it can be started), I'm not familiar with Kettles but it may just be a slow weep of oil into the coolant.

Many cars will go on for years doing that.

I suppose I'd go along with this if it was just a bit of oil in the coolant, but it was really full on emusified ol and water. Either way I'm not in a position to try to fix it for her really.

When you pulled your fingers out were they actually greasy with oil? (Ooo er)

I've overheated a couple of (albeit) much older, iron blocked cars and on both occasions they've spewed coolant back into the overflow and out of the pressure cap; afterwards I've found the overflow tanks to be full of brown sludge.

Now you're asking. Yes pretty gungy stuff that took a bit of wiping on a cloth to get off my hand. As I said not just some oil in the coolant.

I really want to help her, but I'm struggling.

Update and I'm wishing I hadn't got involved with this! The dealer didn't turn up to look at the car so Daughter's Partner's mother (why are things always so confusing these days?) went with a friend to get the loan car, but she didn't take it for the following reasons; not enough petrol and she didn't have any money with her. It was a 2004 Rover 25 with the same engine as her MG so likely to be less reliable as older. It was dirty with animal hair in the interior. She texted me for advice and I should have said you really want someone to give you a new car, but told her that I would have taken the loan car as it is just that, a loan while hers is looked at or fixed. Her other options are the same as before to let the seller fix it, bridge it, k seal it, or get a quote from someone else.

As regards the non start, not sure on that. She said it made a terrible noise then went quiet, so could be anything really. I may try to look at it tomorrow evening if she wants me to as I am a glutton for punishment.

Flush your sim card down the toilet and have a beer.

Had one (or 3!) already

I'd wash your hands of it, she's had options, and cba taking the loan car/too tight to put petrol in it. I've had some right snotter loan cars from garages over the years, but it's wheels. She sounds a right mardy cow, so if I was in your boots, I'd walk away. It sounds like a bodged HG job, happened to a mate with a bubble 25, blew again a few months after being done.

Diagnostics from a distant armchair is never straightforward.   K Series have a reputation for popping headgaskets.  The 'mild pop' results in oil getting into the cooling system ONLY

This is due to a failure of the gasket by the oil feed to the cyl head and will result in a horrible 'hot chocolate / horlicks' in the expansion tank.  A K series will run fine like this,  for many years if you clean the expansion tank out every 1000 miles or so  - I know, I'm 3 years with one like it.

If the HG Failure has got as far as water in the oil leaving you a sump full of  'hot chocolate / horlicks' then it is game over and HG replacement is needed.

The 'full pop' is when you start pressuring the cooling system and it boils up in a few miles, then it is game over and HG replacement is needed..

The trouble is, even if you have the 'mild pop' you still need to look after it, make sure it doesn't get hot, clean out the expansion tank regularly and generally keep an eye on levels, daily would be good if you have any hope of nursing it.

This is very interesting as the dipstick and oil filler cap didn't look too bad. However it does lose lots of coolant on any short drive and of course it now won't start. Oh well!

Thanks for that info.

K-seal, and when that fails - James Brown. Then suggest that she buys something that doesn't have a grenade for an engine.

Sorry if this sounds flippant, but that car really isn't worth the effort or expense. It might be to a shiter, but it sounds like the owner is in the market for reliable transportation rather than a kettle.

Reliable is what she is after and keeps saying!

What I don't understand with K seal is, after you've put it in how do you sort out the coolant which is now chocolate milkshake with added chocolate milkshake?

Don't get me started on people not happy about loan cars !

I run a little diesel saxo as a loaner . No charge for the use but I request that the fuel used is replaced. I reckon half don't bother ( only going home and back ) and 25% say I didn't have time and give me the cash so I have to make time to fuel it up .

Now I insure , mot , tax and service my loan car but people still moan about it because the central locking is a bit French etc etc .

Told one lady she can walk next time when she came back and said " that's bloody horrible "

I'm beginning to wish I didn't . Will be interesting to see how much of my insurance policy is due to having loan vehicles .

The advantage of having loaners is that it can take the pressure off you when you are very busy
