I took the dog to the beach in the summer, she loved paddling about in the seaweed on the shore but it didn't half make the car stink.  I left the window open a crack for weeks and it seemed to get stronger.

It was only when I was loading some spares into the boot I found a doggie bag of poo...

I reckon I'm well nose blind to me and the dog smells so has to be "uptown top ranking" to register these days.

I also find that the permanent slight smell of coolant in the Rover is reassuring.

I quite like some of the oils you buy in the Body Shop. Couple of drips of mandarin flavour on a rag makes the car smell like mulled wine. Probably not a good idea if pulled over by Plod mind.

 

Coffee granules in a small pot or bag work quite well too

Do you mean those plastic baskets that people used to attach to the bowl of the toilet? As some sort of disinfectant? I just used to aim straight at it. A bit like Red Adair putting a fire out.

Stuck on the wall near the urinals, they periodically emit a spray of noxious carcinogens because apparently some people prefer the stink of piss with added chemical pine-alike

Really pungent air fresheners remind me of my grandfather's 309 GLD which I was sick in. A lot. Probably down to the PUNGENCY. I don't like strong chemical scents in general, like chlorine, bleach, and cheap body sprays.

Just use that old style castrol oil in your car. I think it can still be found (probably at a price).

Im happy enough using my old snotters as i like the some of the smells they have 18, 525e, stanza. The exception is the bluebird it honks and god forbid you turn the heaters on, you can actually taste the foul stench of death, need to get that sorted no amount of febreeze will hide that.

Comma air con bomb might help clean up the ventilation. Probably too old for a pollen filter but if it does have one get that changed too. Can't make it any worse!

I am with MercC on this one BMC musk is the best smell evar ..... I love the smell of pachouli oil but cannot use it as it always makes me feel a bit stoned... no idea why ...

I like natural car smells, especially diesels! It's funny how some makes have their own smell. I remember the company Orion diesels dad borrowed in the 80's they had a smell of their own. When I bought one in the mid 90s it smelt the same. My M reg Maestro smells similar to the M reg Rover 825 diesel I had 12 years ago. I assume it's the plastics or fabrics they use.

 

However some cars I have bought smelt awful and I find an air freshener much more pleasant. The leaky Horizon didn't smell pleasant in the summer and the 309 smelt of dog when I bought it and still did a year later when I sold it despite much cleaning.

 

I think if the car smells like a car then it can stay that way but give me a nice air freshener over many odours my nose has been assaulted with over the years!

This is partly because it's filled with the stuff,

Partly because I keep treating it with that liquid leather to make it softer and to exaggerate the smell,

& partly due to keeping the bottle in the map pocket on the back of the seat with the cap off.

I get in my 75s and they all smell the same ie nice leather smell.

The vitesse I have smells as I recollect the others smelling. The same with the p6 I used to own that had a distinctive smell.

This. Certain cars have certain smells. 1980's Skodas absolutely reek - I'm pretty sure someone reckoned its the adhesive they used in the headlining, or something. Like fish, but worse.

Due to a diet with a high chilli and lager content I find it necessary to perfume my car interiors to hide the stench of my weapons grade farts.

 

Car Scents Coronado Cherry seem to do the trick. Every other one I have tried has been useless.

This is defiantly a Rover thing, I love the smell of Rover R8s and they all seem to still have the smell 20/25 years on.

 

I'm another one who dislikes air freshers apart from Fue Orange which my Dad brought us up on.

I'm ashamed to say that my car pongs due to lack of cleaning, hasn't been done for months.

I would have it valeted but the stuff they use would mean I couldn't use the car for a month or so.

I have bought some Orange Oil and Bergamot oil that is acceptable used sparingly - no aldehydes in them.

 

It isn't the smell.  I grow lots of roses, sweet peas and lilies, all of which have quite pronounced aromas but they don't affect me at all, it is just synthetic fragrances - that actually smell both sickly and bitter at the same time.

 

The only laundry products I can use are washing soda, not terribly effective on it's own, and Aldi washing tablets - non-bio and even then have to have extended rinses to clear the slight pong away.  Bought a different one as they had no non-bio last time and it is a problem while the clothes are drying.

 

My garden is frequently out of bounds due to the next door neighbour's washing on the line, drenched in fabric conditioner, and coming home is generally a sprint from the car to house due to tumble drier exhausts into the street from other neighbours.  Bloody good job we never lock the door.

Seriously, it smells of piss. Always has, bit is noticeably worse in damp weather.

 

The C8 has a sort of old lady perfume smell about it.

I like that London Underground brakes / cooked clutch smell. If there was an odoriser of that smell I'd dangle it from my mirror.
