Berlingo XUD9TE project (Y THO?)

Binning the DW8 was on and sometimes off the agenda anyway, but I'm pretty skint just now.

Oh, FFS. Is there one in that spares van you could have?

I looked into it previously and it's mostly bolt on.

Assuming the engine is out of a 306, the timing belt side engine mount may need some bodging or replacing for one off an early XUD Berlingo as the Blingo is a tad wider than the 306.

The exhaust may need to be custom, or one off a 306 estate or HDi Berlingo may work.

Electronics may be an issue - on newer Berlingos everything is interfaced somehow and you may have no clocks etc.

Getting the engine in and working should be pretty simple though cos about 4 wires and a throttle cable, and I guess you can always fit earlier instruments or whatever to get things working with cables and simple senders.

Worth checking, mine is a 2002 and is semi-multiplexed, which means that the throttle pedal operates a cable, which operates a throttle potentiometer in the engine bay somewhere.

Ultimately though, full 306/ZX/etc +  Berlingo + hammers = WIN.

The engine I want to buy is from a 1994 306, TD with Bosch pump, £200 plus courier.

I don't mind keeping the short ratio NA gearbox, I think it'll be quite fun and I'm not worried majorly about fuel consumption, will it all go together okay?

I'm a bit confused about push/pull clutches but surely if I keep my 'box it doesn't matter.

That option would be my choice if the dw8 shat itself in the c15. The thing is it has maf, crank sensor and an ecu but doubt it does much. Cable operated speedo, no immobiliser or rev counter either so I'd go with the be3 box on an early xud9 with no cat or Egr and no electronics

The clutch mechanism is attached to the engine though, even though the operating lever is on the gearbox. I believe the thrust bearing will be different depending on whether it is push or pull.

The berlingo forum thread suggested the DW8 clutch won't last long under XUD POwAAArr.

You will need to match box with clutch and possibly flywheel.

I would really suggest trying to get a full car if possible, but I know that's probably not easy when you're 100 miles north of John O'Groats.

Pretty sure overall it will be a lot cheaper to get a full car, even if it means saving for a few weeks, plus you get a ton of spares and even get to test the engine fully before swapping out.

Also BECAUSE PERRRJOOO most likely not rotten and still with some ticket on it, could then use it until the mot runs out, iron out any issues and do the conversion when the weather gets better*.

I agree too but logistically it's easier to get an engine delivered to my work.

If I buy this near mythical car it's going to be a long way from home, lots of hassle, public transport fares, a day or more of my time and energy and stress.

I'm also worried that if I buy too good a car I'll just sideline my amusing boosted veg burning Berlingo project and scrap it.

Brother has a first generation berlingo diesel breaking in glasgow. Not an hdi but will check for defo what engine is in it and get back asap

If not Hdi, it'll be a DW8.

Depends how early, I had an S plate Blingo van which was an XUD, 1769cc version.

Obvs LP won't want the engine but it could yield some useful bits?

I don't know if there were any 1905cc XUD n/a Berlingos but if it shows up as 1868cc on a reg checker it's definitely DW8.

Possibly, I've put feelers out on FB groups and I'm going to wander down to the well stocked scrapyard on the industrial estate a couple of miles away to have a look.

1992-1995 306/ZX/405 XUD9TE with a Bosch pump is quite specific. If it's cheap enough I'll buy a Lucas pumped engine and sort out the pump later. I still think buying the engine I want from the get go will save hassle and money in the long term.

Hey you seem to know your onions on this so whatever suits you best go for it.

I suppose with scrap being worthless nowadays getting rid of the bits you don't want off a shell is unwanted legwork too?
