Cheers man. Thats heading in the right direction but still miles short of my ideal destination. I.e. the village of Thirty Punds, in Bargainshire.

Hey! Folding mirrors? Don't think my higher spec 316i SE ("Special Equipment") doesn't have folding mirrors. What button do you press for that in case I've been a bit dim?

Posted

Mine has 2 of those but not the folder button so I guess I miserably miss out on that. I wonder how easy it is to retrofit?

May be cheaper to buy a used lock/ecu set with 2 keys rather than shell out for a new key, modern cars = meh!

I was looking into getting a car key cut from a code, on t'internet the other night, as the car has 'no key at all'/ 'lost the keys' status, n I stumbled upon this local locksmiths outfit, that talk a good game on their website;

"Many Car dealers will tell you that you can only get new or additional transponder keys from your main dealer. Truth is, you can get transponder keys from M.D. LOCK & KEY much faster than from a car dealer. Using the latest in computerized key equipment we create transponder vehicle keys in our specialist drive in facilities at our premises in Clonmel. Many car dealers get us to make new keys for their customers so they don't have hassle of ordering and having to wait for them to arrive from overseas"

I found their website through 'master guild of locksmith Ireland' or something...anyways, must be a company, or indeed many companies,  that does the equivalent in UK??

The thing is that there are definitely auto locksmiths around that can do it, but they tend to pitch their prices at not much less than the dealer. I bet it is possible but you probably wouldn't see much change from £100.

Yeah theres someone in boro offering a key cut and coded for £100.

I have alternative fish to fry at the moment. The car started revving by itself today along with a flashing eml. Bouncing from 500 up to 2500 constantly at idle and while driving.

Could be ccv and associated pipework, maf, tps, various air leak possibilities etc.

I managed one 20 mile commute before first issue.

German cars. They have folding electric mirrors but are still shit.

Google E46 revving itself and you get about a million results, and a boatload of causes. Very common apparently.

Try unplugging the maf. If it is at fault unpluging it should stop it doing all the weird shit.

I have/had a  shit load of  genuine BMW boxed up genuine brand new  genuine BMW part no' MAF's, vance units, seat belt tensioners, n random switches, 'in longterm stock', that I haven't managed to sell - all from an ex-BMW 'technician' who owed me a lotta favours, n paid up with these bits; I cant remember what 'all' I have;  a lot of it is bmw diesel gear from memory; some petrol bits there-im not sure if the 'load' goes as far back as e46 generation, but I can  have a check - cheap naturally to a fellow shitter...

Cheers fella. Have a look if you can be arsed, that would be grand.

Cheers Cort. Cackhanded diagnostics are planned for the morning.

As discussed, if MAF stuff makes no difference, remember I have the Launch scan tool.

My goona did that due to a failed connection between the ECU n throttle body.

They quoted me £295. Local dealer did anyway.

Unplugging the maf stopped the fluctuation in revs so I guess thats the culprit. Maf out at 6 secs, back in at 15 secs.

I had a 316 with the old 8v engine that had a MAF fail exactly like this but also had the effect of making the auto gearbox act like a total mental case. It had been sitting for a few months too.

I think the maf cost me £20 and it ran great until the oil pressure light came on.
