I'm getting old. Too cold. Sense of deja vu though, this time last year I was fitting a clutch in the escort. I'm staying away from bmw's and bypasses for a while.

Iirc one of the bell housing bolts is an 8mm Allen bolt facing the wrong way ( threads into the box ) at the back

It's cold, it's icy and I'm stuck. Awaiting the Glossop massive to arrive for joint effort of swearing and knuckle damage.

Driveshaft won't budge no more, gearbox dropped and stuck and tre fucked. Marvellous

Ahhhh OK. Gotcha. Looking like angle grinder through driveshaft, remove box and replace tre, driveshaft etc. Van going to be off road a while. Pushbike coming out.

Surely it be cheaper to actually get a garage who knows what they are doing to fix it rather than have it off the road for ages along with your loss of earnings?.

I know what's what, just things are seized and stuck and the weather doesn't help at all. Hopefully it will be nearly sorted tomorrow

Done that little job yet ?  :-D

Would calling you every hour despite you saying that you will call when its done help ?

Also can I ask on every call how much its going to cost ?

Just to give a little insight into running one of those rip off garages  :-D

The time of year doesnt help, I am stuck at the mother in laws until Sunday. Cold, damp, wrestling with a gearbox or sat here watching some crappy daytime tv and trying to be sociable. I know where I would rather be and it doesn't involve that gormless gob willoughby and her grey haired moron has been co presenter (other shite tv also exists as I am sure I will find out). I sense a six hour dog walk coming on.

Good luck Bub.

Bub hasn't had the luck this last two years to have the money to take it to a garage. He has worked his nuts off to get another job after a thoroughly shit year. I am sure if funds allowed he would be sat with feet up eating Ferraro rocher but it's not an option for him at the moment.

I understand mate. Been in garage trade myself. I am very weary of garages I don't know. My old manager wanted us to find faults so he could charge more. I disagreed with it and that's why I come out. The honest business like yourself I have a lot of respect for especially with customers who for example ring up and say because you changed engine oil, my handbrake cable snapped and it's all your fault type as you know what I mean. Couldn't work in a garage anymore. And having a disability and being out in this weather isn't helping!

Rather be eating bacon and watching Jeremy kyle! Anyway I'm going to crawl downstairs and take painkillers. Munch on brekky then try and fuck things up some more. Who's idea was it to put that bloody bearing on the driveshaft?

So would I rather be indoors rather than changing a shogun heater matrix today

I haven't. I toyed with towing it to a garage. Until I realised I spent last of money on clutch anyway.

Undo the right hand hub nut, split the bottom balljoint and pull the short shaft out of the hub. Then remove the whole intermediate bearing carrier from the back of the engine....4 bolts and its on locating studs so needs to be levered off. The intermediate shaft will then pull out of the gearbox and you can drop the whole shaft.

This is also the lower engine steady. Removing this helps with box removal as you can tip the end of the engine down further with the steady removed.

Refitting the bearing carrier can be a complete knobber - last one I had to grind off the locating studs on the engine block as I couldnt get it to slide over them for some reason.

Remember to remove the flywheel coverplate at the bottom of the gearbox...Three 8 or 10mm bolts hold it to the gearbox. The main bellhousing bolts are a mixture of normal and allen keys. The starter bolts are allen keys, and there is one more at the bottom at the back. The rest are normal iirc.

Alternatively, leave the intermediate shaft and undo just the engine steady so you can tip the engine right down low. You should then be able to slide the box off the clutch splines and driveshaft at the same time. HOWEVER....this requires you to remove the big stud from the gearbox mount so it clears the chassis rail and these are often impossibly tight. Its not fun doing it this way as while it might come apart ok, refitting the box will require you to line up the clutch splines AND the driveshaft splines into the diff at the same time. Whenever I try it this way I usually end up on the point of burning the garage down and hanging myself, then give up in a huff and take the intermediate driveshaft off anyway.
