Junior Jag- how Wank are X types?

If my (4x4) Golf steered as well as an X type 4x4 I'd be very happy indeed.

To be honest, with the exception of my Integrales, I've not driven much that steers as well as a 4x4 X type.

There ain't many messages from the steering because the thing is going exactly where it's pointed. The steering will be quiet, it's not fighting bump or torque steer, just quietly getting on with the job of being very accurate and precise.

Understeers like a pig compared to my Pug, and way over assisted, the 406 is bad enough for that.

Posted

Understeers? Mine certainly wouldn't do that. It'd oversteer occasionally.

There seems to be a pretty unanimous opinion on this, so what is the best alternative? Ideally she'd like a V70 but they all seem expensive and leggy, MK3 Mondeos all seem clapped out, the later Mondeos are getting cheap but could be trouble. Late Lagunas are looking interesting..

Mk4 is less trouble as it goes. PSA unit in it. Can do some immense miles they can. Needless to say the 1.6 diesel though is fucking shit. Most 1.8/2.0 though.

It will if you throw it in, but it still understeers on turn in. It's not a bad steer, but up there with the best on the road? Not even close.

It has pretty much new everything front to rear so it's not worn components either.

Not that any more personal experiences are needed, but I moved swiftly on from a 2005 X-Type which had surface rust AND had required welding for the MOT. The dealer had only got the rust that needed sorting via welding actually sorted - the surface rust under the door was appalling and I ran bravely like the magnificent male specimen I'm not.

Pretty much every single ten year old diesel will have potential for ££££ repair bills unless you find one with a documented history where every failure has been rectified prior to the car being P/Xed or whatever.

If diesel is a must, the 2.0d in the S40 is meant to be pretty good (or not that bad). If you want to avoid diesel-expense but want to recoup the economy, I would seriously suggest checking out an S40 or V50 with the 1.8 engine.

It's around 130hp, maybe a smidgen less, but it feels very eager, revs freely and makes a surprisingly nice noise for a four pot. I got one as a courtesy car while my old V70 was being MOTed and on the journey to work from the garage and back to the garage from work it easily hit 40mpg driven normally on windy stuff as well as dual carriageways. Get an SE spec for cowskin and heated seats etc.

A 2.4 V50 in 170hp flavour is on my radar as a possible 'sensible' replacement next year - they are incredibly rare with a manual box and a decent spec though. The 170hp is just sufficient in the V70 but apparently in the V50 it's a great unit, wafty, torquey and sufficient shove to make one grin at the five pot warble.

There is only one way to do an X Type and that's petrol V6, manual, 4 wheel drive, leather and well under 500 quid. At least it was a fairly okay car when new and you can cruise around at 23 mpg in your leather cocoon, not giving a shit about sill rust or any of the other X Type nonsense - the V6 manual is probably the most reliable.

Diesels are fucking hateful - you might grow to like the V6 by the time you weigh it in. The V6 engine is a lovely thing.

I have so say, I think these things are 'uber-wank' - loads of problems which you might put up with if you got something good in return, what you get is a mondeo with extra rust and a god-awful fisher price interior.

A rattly interior at that, if the '09 played one I (briefly) had as a daily driver is typical of the breed.

Mine was an estate, and quality* control at the factory obviously only applied to saloons. Mine had a rusty tailgate that was so bad once the chrome trim was teased off that the whole panel was replaced under warranty, and a boot floor with only a few flecks of primer in the spare wheel well.

I also had several electrical FTPs, which resulted in great swathes of under bonnet wiring being replaced.

I baled out after 14 expensive months. On a make of car I'd always wanted.

Can't unreccomend enough.

I had a Mondeo before and after that Jag and they were better in every respect other than how flash the interior looked.

Yeah, I've had to replace a lot of wiring, the loom to the fuse box that then runs behind the dash is laughable, I was half expecting it to have 'Lucas' tags.

You are right, it's one of those cars you have for the shit and giggles. Don't spend silly money.

The X Shytes were built at Halewood, the Ford plant well known for quality products. Mondeos were built in Ghent, Belgium and were much better. I think the X Shyte was based on the Mondeo Mark 1/2 floorpan....?

Posted

Possibly the 4x4 might have had floorpan in common with the Mk1 4x4. Had a bulge in the drivers side trans tunnel plus reinforced boot floor. I know this as there was one in Deatons about 5 years ago - had some unique looking recaro seats fitted. Probably a demo or preproduction

I drove one once when fairly new, 2.2 diesel, it wasn't terrible and I remember thinking the pleather interior was much nicer than my car.

My car was a clapped out M reg Combo van.

Every diesel one I've seen sounds exactly like a clapped out Transit

Currently doing an engine swap on an 05 3.0 v6 4wd estate . Not a pleasant job and I've got the backs of both sills to look forward to afterwards .

Apparently the v6 isn't the best motor and the transfer box is very fragile on the 3.0 .

I don't rate them to be honest and I don't like the mk3 mondeo either

Saab 9-5 is a better quality car but not such a good drive .

I had a new diesel se in 2007......it was nice while I had it. Nicer than the succession of mk3 Mondeos before it.

Mind you the power/refinement of the m3 Mondeo was revelation when they first came out......especially the TDCi

Wouldn't want either now mind......they don't seem to age well!

What have I learnt from this thread - either buy an old jag and screw fuel economy, or buy a mondeo...

Interesting. See, one of hte other cars on my radar - the 'silly' option - is a facelift S-Type with the 2.5 V6 engine. I'd like a manual 'box, and indeed most reviews of this particular spec are glowing, but out of curiousity would you know how grenedey the autoboxes on these cars are?

And are they more reliable than one would assume based upon the badge?

I had a 2.0d estate for 2 years and 28,000 miles. It was an odd car, never really bonded with it but didn't have any bother other than leaky alloys. Sounded like a sickly Transit mind, and I felt like a bellend driving it......

Oh and they have the worst wheel nuts in history!

Father V6 has a 2.5 petrol and it has eaten coil packs. Apart from that it seems to have been reasonably reliable.

Whenever I an early diesel drives past in audible range I hear the whining from some engine ancillary and it sounds to me just like a Transit van.

Posted

I mustard mitt that I covertly had the odd 3.0 4x4 added to my watchlist, since WBoD potential was assumed.

Then I saw PhillipM's thread. That scared me enough to buy a Range Rover HSE instead.

Telling me! Had to swap 4 out of the 20 recently when the ally cover on them chewed up from the corrosion.

IMO the x type is like building a kit car jaguar replica using a mondeo as a donor car.

Are the S type not a rebodied Lincoln?

I'd definitely have a cheap 3.0 . The basic diesel ones they sold are truly fucking miserable inside .

I was never a huge fan of the styling either.

Around that time they seemed to think everything needed to look like a poor 70s xj6 spin off .

Yeah all cars rust etc etc especially oop norf...  Just buy one from down south, it really can make a difference on a 10+ year car

Its no coincidence this corner of Essex is still full of tat.
