Junior Jag- how Wank are X types?

Hi Shitists,

Soz for all the "how bad are" type threads I've been posting recently, I promose I'll do a write up on something proper crap soon.. in the mean time the wife is still set on getting a new family motor. I've spied a cheapish 05 plate 2.0 diesel estate that seems to be in good shape. It's proper pov spec though. Cloth seats, wind up windows in the back, no climate control etc. Lovely.

Any opinions on these? Is it true that thyou rust issues were fixed by 2004 or so?

I don't know but would like to as I keep thinking about buying one.  Did sit in an early petrol model a while back though and couldn't believe how cheap it was inside, a contemporary Mondeo felt better.

They like to rust!!

Rear subframe and sills hidden behind plastic covers.

Diesel engines are rattly and suffer from egr problems, usually sorted with a blank kit.

Petrols are thirsty.

Other than that you really need toys and leather to appreciate the jag "feel".

Oh, and they only have 20% mondeo dna so don't let that put you off.

Standard Mondeo TDCi issues exist, egr parts are specific to the Jag.

If it's rattly or DMF is suspect it will cost you.

That said the ones I've known have been fairly good. Pov spec really is misery, for not much more money you can buy more to go wrong.

Mrs 95 Quid had one as a company car, shes always done 30-50k miles a year for last couple of decades, plus all the shite and classic car stuff for last 30 years, and the X-Type was by far the biggest heap of Cack we've ever had..

3 Clutches and DMF's  (we've never had to change a clutch on a car..Ever)

Headlights like Toc H lanterns ...after first speck of dirt on them...always wet wipes in glove box.

i found front seats painfully small in fat arse dept, had to remove covers and trim some of the foam base away.

Good points , reasonably economical

The 2.2 diesels are bit more robust aren't they it seems to be these 2.0tdci ones that are shite?

Yes, having read that thread I definitely wouldn't. I did have one for a couple of weeks that I won on ebay by mistake but I never dug deep enough to see how rotten it probably was. Would not do again, probably.

Are the S-Types less rot-prone because they've been designed properly?

Thread Hi Jack ALert.

What the actual fuckity fuck is Toc H?

Design teacher back at school had a Triumph 1300 FWD the number plate was TOC xxx H

On some idiotic trip out to Leicester with her one day she exclaimed, 'Oooh Look, TOC H, that's the same as my number plate'.

It haunts me to this day.

Bit more than 20% . engine and box is ford to start with !

Think mk3 mondeo only more complicated and with added rust.

As mentioned before, I had a 2.2d X Type auto saloon 08 reg as a loan car when my XJ was being repaired after a woman using her Range Rover as an office rammed my stationary car on the A42.

The car I had prior to the XJ was a manual 2.2d Mondeo.

In my humble opinion, the Mondeo was superior in every possible way.

The lights are crap, even the factory HIDs - my Mondy had the factory HIDs and they were loads better.

There was no improvement in ride or handling from the Jag over the Mondy and despite the not looking as flash, the leather seats in the Mondy were better than the Jag ones for comfort.

The Jag wasn't quieter, faster, more refined - or anything that made it better than an equivalent Mondeo in my book.

As for how much Mondeo content they have - I couldn't give a flip about that, but the 20% content obviously depends how you do the sums.  When I changed the front spring on my Mondeo , the strut was stamped with a Jag logo.

BTW while we're on this "it's really another car" the initial S-Type was slated for handling - because it was essentially a Lincoln (i.e. Ford) LS.  They properly "Jagised" it with the facelift.

They were built with steel from the Ka factory reject section, rear callipers last a year, electrics make a lagonda look like a JD power top ten candidate, they smell like a 70's Sprite caravan and they drive like an uber mondeo with 400k on the clock. A friends brother has one and when he's in the area ,I hide. There is always something wrong with it and it's been pampered since new. Hateful thing.

The V6 2.5 and 3.0 are great.

The diesels aren't.

They like to rust.

Whilst the V6's are a nice engine, the transfer box behind them likes to spit all it's oil out (they only hold 600ml so it doesn't take long) and then shit itself. And they're a 'sealed for life' unit with no filler plug. And the seal that leaks is the first thing that goes in the box on assembly...

Most X Type Diesels I've taken in PX at 90k plus have had a rattily DMF. Seems to be a good time for people to get rid.

They drive a million times nicer than the diseasel ones. The x type 4x4 has possibly the best steering I've ever experienced on a standard road car.

I have so say, I think these things are 'uber-wank' - loads of problems which you might put up with if you got something good in return, what you get is a mondeo with extra rust and a god-awful fisher price interior.

Urrrrgh!!! What a nightmare! I'm starting to think a DCI LAGUNA is going to be a better long term prospect.

In all seriousness the phase 2 Laguna II 2.0 dci is a solid Nissan sourced engine and by that point Renault had fixed the electrics.

The Laguna III are getting exceptionally good value. Tarred by Laguna II & I reputation and not the prettiest of things, their value is pretty low. However on the plus side, the interior is a big step up from the II and at this age Renault realised they couldn't get away with electrical nightmares. The current reports seem to say they're very hardy and reliable in the electrical domain.

Avoid the 1.5dci. You get excellent fuel economy and by this time Renault had fixed most of the major issues. However they still have a habit of exploding badly and they also are very noisy and agricultural.

The 2.0DCi and 2.0 petrol in the Laguna III are both Nissan sourced engines again and seem to be reliable lumps.

The Ford heritage being D reg escort in that pic.

Really? I thought it was dire!

Like steering a barge.

You must have driven some bloody good barges.

Posted

Nope, it's just the steering is numb and overassisted. Not anywhere close to most older Pugs, MX-5's, etc.

There seems to be a pretty unanimous opinion on this, so what is the best alternative? Ideally she'd like a V70 but they all seem expensive and leggy, MK3 Mondeos all seem clapped out, the later Mondeos are getting cheap but could be trouble. Late Lagunas are looking interesting..

I also think the V6 ones drive well. Not very Jag-like, but I thought it handled well and I was impressed by the steering on the one I drove.
