What WBoD ?

Think I need something with a little bit more comfort than the Colt to waft around in over winter / for long journeys

Leather (preferably heated)
Automatic gearbox

Not going to break down every 5 minutes

Sub £1000, preferably sub £500

What do you have, Autoshite?

E38, naturally, although that's more a sub £1000 rather than £500 motor.

I've wanted an E38 for a while but a ropey cheap one won't fit in well with my reliability concern!

Sub -£1000 should be fine - Herman was bang on a grand and touch wood, I have had no FTP beyond a loose battery connection, but as always it's a lottery.

Given the budget, I'd probably say SAAB 9-5.

From my personal experience the older and less electronic a car is the better chance you stand of it being reliable.

From my own cars both our 1999 V70 T5 and 2001 V70 XC have had big bills. Our 740 problems seem less and cheaper to fix.

Our Rover 75 is a pain, while our W124 200TE has been pretty good and I would say that they are better than average.

Leather, no

Automatic, no

No breakdowns, no

Price yes and no.

I have the perfect car that meets none of your criteria,

My alfa 166 was much missed, unusual but well specc'd £500 WBOD-

Heated seats, Fwd, busso v6 ( a great source of warmth in the winter months) and quite rust resistant. Mine was reliable too ( never put a Latin loafer wrong) Best bought with a wad of recent bills for the consumables ( suspension arms especially) The question is do ya feel lucky?

The next car to be raffled is always the correct answer.

I'm sure SiC will be fed up with how knackered his is shortly....

Volvo 940 petrol with LPT should fit the bill as long as it doesn't snow again this winter. The 4 cylinder petrol engines were reckoned to be the longest lasting and there are usually one or two giffer owned minters going cheap.

I know of an out of mot but recent exhaust and tyres 2.0 manual crv for £200 that someone at work is flogging?

Just checked the Lexicon. Jeez that's a cryptic one, but I now get it.

WBOD -- Winter Beater Of Distinction. Often a rusty car which is slightly* past its best, driven only during the harsh British winter, to preserve another car which is only slightly* less rusty. (See: OMGSNOKAOS)
