Where has that puddle come from then?

Ben

Ahhh yes that was my fault, I had a bit of a spill when I checked the coolant after parking up

Left work at four, small spot of LHM under the car. Not a puddle just a stain. Levels seemed good so off we go

Later on I parked beside another thrusting executive

I do like this car. It's fantastically relaxed on the motorway and my mundane commute felt like an event. I imagine the V6 with an auto box is excellent.

I'm finding the turbo boost on mine to be addictive too. I can poddle along on the motorway, just moving with the other traffic in lanes 1 and 2, for only a limited period. Then I get bored and take to lane 3 and hoof it for a bit, safe* in the knowledge that it's not really costing me any more in diesel, while putting an enormous smile on my face. And causing everything in the mirror to get a lot smaller. Then I find a quieter section of motorway and settle back to poddling along.

I too have a sluggish window to sort, a rear door that is reluctant to lock, courtesy lights that go OUT when I open the door, a slight leak into the boot, a squeaky heater fan that is slacking at its post again, a pipe that likes a good old clank when pumping from a full sink and, and..

I couldn't be happier. Lots of minor things to fix...

Out on family duty today, so a trip down to the wife's nan.

Parked beside a gorgeous 205gti but didn't get a pic as the owner looked like he wouldn't appreciate it. Awk well.

Stupid question but as it's a sinker I'm OK parking on a kerb like this?

It would have to be a lot bigger kerb than that for it to be problem. Now, if you were parked end-on to the kerb and had hung the nose or the mud flaps over it, that would be different...

XUD turbo boost really "kicks", something missing from refined modern turbo diesels.

Love this car.

I'm going to have a fiddle with the pump. It's got a xantia pump in place of the standard one, and Jonathan has got it running very well. But I think a bit of a fiddle wouldn't do any harm

I'm still blown away by how a frugal 2.something diesel has so much heave to give when it's already doing 70* mph

PO told me that the turbo is on maximum boost ATM and that, if abused, could be damaging. He sent me the natty boost controller he never got around to fitting, but it remains in its packaging...

Your tow bar will help... I was at a mates fitting an exhaust today, and upon leaving started the car and pulled away... Crunch! Bloody back had sunk, I'd gone down a kerb and the tow bar hit the edging stone...

Could be a quick way to change a rear wheel, to wear over a kerb, into low and the rear wheels will lift...

I'm sure as standard it's dead on, but the original pump on mine died and Jonathan fitted a xantia pump, and from memory done a bit of tweaking to the off boost fueling to get it running right but nothing to the on boost fueling.

He seemed to think it was a bit stronger on boost on the original pump so really I'm just trying to get it to where it maybe should be, not chasing OMG monster torque or power.

It goes well as it is but I'm intending on having the caravan on the back at some point

So let's get a fix list drawn up, in no particular order:

1) Sort the high pressure pump. I'm intending rebuilding one of the spares...

2) sort the locks. Not bothered about the central locking being temperamental but sometimes the drivers door won't lock at all from the key.

3) fix the height adjuster lever. It's snapped at the top (they all do that Sir?) they seem to change hands for silly money especially in mk1 guise so I'm just going to bodge mine. Initial thoughts are to sink pins into the two halves and glue them together.

4) sort the lacquer peel on the spoiler and grill. This can wait till the better weather as I'm working outside. Itll never be concourse but those two bits will neaten it up no end.

5) tune the fuel pump a wee bit for more on boost naughtiness

6) clutch lever is a bit stiff / jerky in use. Tbh I've got used to it and think it's got better with use. But it's still not right. There's a bit of grindy transmission noise in some gears but hey 280,000 miles.

Amazingly that's about it really. I might remove the interior in spring for some steamy vax action. And the slight oil and LHM leaks needs an eye kept on them.

Cheers dude as I'm stepping into unknown territory here!

There's a natty little boost gauge built into the instrument cluster.....but it doesn't work lol. Might bodge in a temporary one for tuning purposes

The boost gauge did used to work albeit lazily; might you have knocked the pipe off the pressure transducer when you were working on it?

More than likely! I'll have a gander

And the winner is......

Pipe that joins the inlet manifold was floating around. Normal service resumed!

Does it have a factory fitted boost gauge? I would like to see that.

It should go faster now the boost isn't leaking away...

Was the turbo always very audible in the car? On boost there's a loud whooshing noise. Not a whistle, definitely a rushing of air. If it wasn't always like that then I've probably not refitted one of the hoses properly.......

Even so just back from an airport run and it performs like a car half its weight both in terms of acceleration and handling. It's very composed and you can cover ground quite quickly without feeling it....

It always did make a whooshing noise, but in a good way. The rubber seals that go betwixt the plenum chamber and the inlet manifold might not be as good as they perhaps should be...

I shall make a video at some point for our mutual enjoyment.

It fairly piles on the speed so I do think most of the boost from the turbo is going where it should!

There was a goodly amount of whistle whenever the turbo woke up on mine, which I traced to a collapsed section of the plastic intake pipe - it had gone from circular to roughly heart shaped and so there was always a good proportion of the air sucked in to the turbo that was not coming through the air filter at all, but from the gap in the pipework. Bearing in mind that the turbo is almost brand new, I'd rather not lunch it with unfiltered air, so I ummd and ahhd about how to resolve the leak, and ended up doing this:

I know it looks like a recipe for disaster, but I'm satisfied that this type of jubilee clip can't self destruct into parts that would end up in the turbo. It holds the pipe in shape, allowing sufficient tightening of the rubber pipe that goes over it, with another jubilee clip. And it's banished the whistle, so I'm happy that all the air is coming in through the filter.

There's still a satisfying whoosh whenever it's required

You lot keep going on about how fun your XMs feel with XUDs in them, and here's me thinking my remapped Xantia HDi feels a bit... flat.

Perhaps I'm still subconsciously getting over the Lexus LS400 and the Vauxhall Omega though, as the Xantia isn't really terribly slow. The HDi just doesn't have the same kick as an XUD.

I keep umming and ahhing about getting rid of the Xantia, then I drive it and it's comfy like an old pair of boots (and it looks like an old pair of boots too). It keeps growing on me, and it can carry frankly silly speeds round corners, and it seemingly runs on thin air. :D

Update time. Ever since the 307 failed it's MOT I've been using the XM as my daily driver, and really quite enjoying it.

£20 diesel is getting me roughly 190 miles which is insane for such a large car. To be fair that's almost exclusively longer runs but even so I'm pretty impressed.

I traced the turbo WHOOSH to the output pipe on top of the turbo. In my rush to press it into service id forgotten to put this one tiny bolt back on:

4548eb872e2f7c434d75d365a6253a6e.jpg

This holds the plastic pipe from the turbo in place. Without it under boost the pipe was lifting up off the turbo and most of the boost was going nowhere. I've no idea if it's properly fixed as I haven't taken it for a run yet

Whilst I was in the shed I noticed the pile of cheap amazon parts I have stacked up and thought I may as well change the air filter. The old one wasn't too bad but its given me some shelf space back

I also have a fuel filter from Amazon. However I also have one Jonathan left in the glove box which is completely different (his on the left)

Assuming the one I've bought is wrong it's free to whoever wants it

After all that it was time to soap myself senseless with this handsome beast

e6a0f5357164a49e6f0d05a3847879a0.jpg

I've now two spare pumps, I'll soon strip one and try and make a decent one out of the bits. The one on the left is Jonathan's old pump, and I think the only issue with it is a leak from the input shaft, the one on the right is an unknown quantity from ebay

I need to go and check that bolt is in place on mine now!

Question - what holds the cap with the overflow pipe on the LHM reservoir on yours? On mine it sits rather unconvincingly on top with no seal and seems to lead to a bit of a mess on top.
