Don't be silly, P6 owners don't shout about their conveyances!

One of the worst offenders was a giffer on my aunt's road in Beckenham who'd adorned his other car, a Fiesta Titanium, with Rover-badged carbon fibre effect plates reading 'P6 0WNR'.

Sounds like a right W4NKR

I spent a few hours on this again this evening, no photos as there isn't anything that interesting, i removed the old radio which is a Austin Rover aftermarket one dated 1987 to fit my new stereo but i couldn't finish as i need an inline fuse and a aerial adapter for the new radio, gave the car a good hoover which as helped although the carpets could do with being changed, it came with a slighter better set so at some point I'll removed the front seats and swap them round.

I also managed to win a set of good Uniroyals on ebay for £30 which are only up the road!.

I'm really pleased with this so I've cancelled the order for the new pair and will fit this matching set for cheaper!

I have only just caught up with this thread now and can only say well done. The car looks superb and all of the period extras are a real bonus. I reckon I will have to make a few excuses to head up towards Ipswich, just so that I have the chance of seeing it somewhere around the town.

Anyway, even though the raised lettered number plates look pretty nice, I would personally stick with the ones that are on it, as I feel that they are a part of that particular car's history, which has done pretty well to survive this long (if they are really the ones from 1982).

Thank you! The beauty of this car is the amazing history with it, the plates were fitted as part of it's £784 respray back in 1982.

When you think about it, that's like doing a shell-up restoration on a 2 litre KV6 R75 today.

...good brakes...

Until you have to fix them. Then they are the single biggest misery you have ever experienced in your life and not by a narrow margin.

The thought of having to rebuild the rear brakes makes me lose my will to live.

To put this into perspective, having to fix the front ones merely makes me want to smash my knees with a sledgehammer.

True. Rover P6 owners wear the furry side of the coat inwardly.

I'd heard they were a faff, but _that_ bad? I'm going to go research. Few things are _that_ bad.

Is it rude to ask how much hold out yer aaaaand is required for P6 ownership?

How about this: If you want to change the front discs, you have to move the calipers out of the way. So far nothing unusual, is it?

But on a P6, in order to move the calipers, you have to undo the brake pipes!

Hence having to replace the discs = having to bleed the braking system afterwards, which is a bloody nightmare on these.

If you need a new brake servo for a V8, jump out of a cellar window straight away. Or throw yourself behind a moving train.

I mean, I now got a spare one from the haunted car. Needless to say the studs holding it in snapped when I tried to remove it.

4 cylinder cars have a smoothness that the V8 does'nt. I aleays thought the P6 would be yhe next big thing but they are still cheap. It looks a very good buy.

If you have to ask, etc etc.

But seriously, for 1970s exec saloons, they still are downright bargains.

Still, I said, because the prices are rapidly going northbound.

A tatty but driveable four banger can be had for as little as a bag and some, add another for twice the cylinder count.

But those won't keep you happy in the long run.

Good V8s are now solidly in the 5-6 grand bracket, with exceptional ones having passed the five figure mark, especially Series 1s.

Add at least 25% condition for condition for manual V8s, or best ignore them, like I do.

My 'new' V8 currently leaves me little change out of 3 grand and considering what it is, I think I was seriously lucky.

I bet I could sell it for 4k among friends any day.

The secret to smart P6 buyage is the ability to totally ignore the condition of the panels. They are irrelevant.

What is underneath them is important and there are specific areas that require careful checking.

If in doubt, the Granadaland Greenhouse Gassers are happy to assist.

To be honest i don't know what they are are worth, when i looked around this one it was a bit of a spur of the moment thing as i wasn't expecting to be buying a car, condition wise the body panels are very good expect for a couple of small blisters, the paint finish is perfect although it needs a hand polish again, from what i can see there's no rust behind any panels, floor or under the rear seats although this is whats bothering me still the most, can it really be that clean still?. There's plenty of mud stuck behind the panels so its clearly been used, I'll get the wheels off and wire brush and undersill behind all there though to be sure.

As for price, the seller wanted £3000 with the spares, i had £2500 in my head and we agreed on £2550 in the end. I think thats fair but I'm really not sure, I think I'd be happier if someone who knew about these gave me the thumbs up about it to be honest.

Excellent motor Trig. I'd love one one day. Slightly sad at the previous opportunities I turned down.

Still, cracking motor.

It's a fair deal.

Until you take the sill covers off...

In theory I've got an 8th share of a house coming if the bloody thing ever sells and lawyers don't steal all of the profit. I'd like something nice with a v6 or v8 to use occasionally. I'd really like a capri injection again, but a) going out of price range and b ) it's never the same second time round. A P6 would be fun to burble around in.

I think they are a real bargain - they have the look of an expensive car. I'm forever amazed how little they sell for - though prices are rising.

They are just so fucking cool. And a reminder of how innovate Rover were - the real Rover.

Great buy Trig and just love all the history.

If it's as tidy as it looks, I think Herr Trigger you may have got yourself a bargain

Thank you! My dad came over this evening to help me with a few jobs in it, he only left at midnight!, he brought the ebay tyres round for me which are perfect, for £30 I'm well chuffed.

The first, and longest job was sorting the stereo out, we finished wiring it all up, connected the stereo only for it to keep turning on and off repeatedly, odd, so i tried another stereo and the same, and the same again on a 3rd stereo...

It was drawing up 12.1v volt but if i connected the radio straight to the battery it worked perfect so it had to be a power issue, after a lot of faffing about it turned out the previous owner had wired the power source from the interior light wire which wasn't man enough, after rewiring it to the cigarette socket instead we then had tunes!

Ok it looks shit but it did cost me £4, the red wire was meant to be for the aux input but i now don't think it has it.

By now it was 11pm and we was tired so we thought we would have a quick look at how the rear belts fit as they arrived today... 45mins and much swearing later we had a belt!

Personally i think it look crap but with a 8 month old daughter I'd sooner it look crap than her getting hurt in a accident.

Tomorrow/todays plans are to change the oil and filter, change tyres and polish.

Either way it THE LAW.

No belt = no carry children under 36 months.

Once you start polishing your tyres, you really have turned into me.

Yeah, but sometimes one just has to flout stupid laws.

I'm not saying children shouldn't be safe in a car, but laws should only be obeyed if they make sense.

In the P6's case, it's easy to do, so it should be done. In a P4, for example, I wouldn't give a toss.

Normally she's in the front of the old cars with this seat base which clips in with the seat belt and where her car seat then clips into but i want her in the back of this Rover so this way is much better.

Currently having the front tires changed, the old ones were tubed.
