Hoew the hell is an MGB 'interesting' compared to a Rancho?

What I suspect the chap means is that he likes working on MGBs as you can get everything new off the shelf

You weld up half a dozen MGBs and all the rest are a doodle.

He probably hasn't even seen a Rancho in 30 years so has no idea what to expect.

What a knobjockey. That's like telling punters, "You're welcome into my establishment, but your fat, ginger friend can fuck off." Is he outright refusing, or is he testing the water? Would it be worth trying a bit of reverse psychology and explaining how it'll be good experience fo him to take on a new type of challenge.

If not, hopefully you'll find another decent welder/fabricator locally.

Also he probably thinks if he welds up a MG shell and the customer doesn't pay up he can sell the shell quite easily.

Rancho has been fighting me somewhat. Petrol stubbornly refuses to get to the carb.

 

Petrol as far as the lift pump but beyond that nothing. 

 

So I bought a priming bulb connected it to the end of the pipe on the carb and pumped..... all that happened was that the bulb stayed flat!.

 

OK there's a blockage, try the bulb on the tank side of the lift pump... squish, squish...petrol. All good.

 

The lift pump it seems is completely blocked, more than that seized.

 

So one NOS lift pump from ebay later and I have petrol.

 

Talbot fun currently curtailed due to it pissing down here so probably no start attempt today.

In fact, when the rain stopped I did exactly that. and whilst it didn't start, it definitely tried.

Sadly the battery went flat shortly after so it was game over for Friday.

 

 

This morning I chucked the freshly charged battery back on, turned the key and it burst into life!

 

It is however running like a pig so there is still work to do.

Talbot update.

 

As I mentioned earlier, I got it to start. After a another clean up of the plugs, It would start and run nicely as seen in the clip Mr 83C posted (sorry I couldn't embed it directly - because I am a fool. If you are more compooter savvy than me feel free).

 

Anyway, I ran it up and got it properly warm however the fan doesn't seem to be cutting in so I'll check that out.

 

As I was feeling cocky I tried moving and it would shunt backwards and forwards on the drive quite happily.

 

For every triumph, there must be a reckoning and mine is that when my wife came home I showed off my now running Rancho, and the begger wouldn't play.

 

Nothing, cranking but not a sign of life. Further check reveals no spark.

Sounds to me like the electronic ignition module situated on the inner wing has taken exception to its sudden burst of electrical activity I had to replace quite a few of these on my own Talbots back in the day.

This is the ignition unit which may be up the creek, anyone know how to diagnose it, or where I could get another?

Diagnostics is as follows, remove unit, place in bin, go to shop, open wallet and start crying........

Found an old school motor factors in my travels today. As I'm a masochist I went in and asked the bloke of he had an ignition control module for a rancho. I think I made his day, but all he could do was shake his head and lament what he'd chucked in the skip when he took the shop over.

Check that you have the ignition type that is using a hall sensor, the cable to the distributor has 3 wires.

There is also a version with a magnetic sensor, cable has two wires, let me know if this is what you need.

Tried to send Ruff a PM, but not able to.

 

Anyway, if the Ruff module is as per the pic, I don't think it's the right one as mine has a 'D' shaped 5 pin connector.
