Did that not happen a few years before the poll tax came in? I believe he was actually quite popular when I was there. The man of the farmhouse we stayed in had died recently and Schellenburg had taken steps to get him back to the island so he could die at home, I think he actually flew him home. Soon after that things turned a bit sour though.

your probably right...we did a group trip over there in the late 70s from Strontian..it was my Mums birthday outing and i was the only kid..and when we were walking past the Lords manor my Mums boyfriend went and knocked on Schellenburgs door..and asked him could we borrow the Bentley to drive around the island..of which John was unceremoniously told to fack awf..!

Wow! They've got some mega rust bugs up there!

This photo could only be bettered if the name VAL was conveniently spelled out on the rear bumper.

Oh, and as no-ones had a go at the tarp challange I call Humber Hawk/Super Snipe estate.

Another thought. This is what, a '74? Its a ready made race car transporter. Maybe a bit late for the Goodwood Revival but how cool with some sort of seventies single seater (or hairy super-saloon) on ramps on the back and living quarters in the cab. 8)

That converted coach is a "wrecker" type recovery vehicle. It would have had a crane on the back to lift stranded coaches/lorries by their front axle and tow them home. Looks like the crane has been removed though.

This is the obligatory Alexander Y type Leyland Leopard. It started life with Western Scottish, probably fitted out as a coach.

Loads of them were converted as above and they survive in very good numbers, with several examples residing at the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust and the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum. Its sister vehicles from the SCS-M batch are also fairly well represented in the preservation movement.

I converted an EFE model of a Y-type into one of these I liked them so much!

I wondered what it was, I didn't investigate the back-end as some curtain twitchers were eyeing me up.I think it would make a great race car transporter, I can picture it with a Morris Marina rally car on the back.

These are some great shots, I like how this Mazda is immaculate compared to all the newer stuff that has rotted half into the ground... can't have been there that long then :)

Not many spots recently, but here's a few

This 405 GLD saloon has been donating parts to my estate, hardly see any saloons anymore, especially non-turbos. It's now been scrapped.

Great graphic design on the front of this AA handbook, shame the content is so dull

That Hustler really needs to be rescued! Kit shite of the highest order!

If the Hustler wasnt so rare it probably would have been - I am sure all those windows etc would be in demand if there was an owners club or something.

..It should be saved admittedly. Now that the SVA is here there wont be any new pieces of boxy kit car shite :(

A few northern Scottish spots - I haven't seen much recently

Old Fiat Ducato in autoshite colouring, don't often see the Fiat version of these vans

Subaru 1800, Volvo 340 and Transit going to meet their maker

Battered Toyota Hiace pick-up

I went on a trip to Ireland last week, I was expecting the place to be rammed with shite, sadly not. Most cars there are pretty new. They love Toyotas, especially the Corolla. Hatchbacks are seen as a bit avantgarde, anything with a saloon option is chosen over an opening rear door - this includes tiny stuff like Hyundai Accent saloons with useless little letter slot boots.

welded rear doors awesome, wonder what the story is with the hearses :?

Posted

It was mentioned earlier about the lack of older stuff in Eire.

I too was surprised by the lack of the older stuff over there when I was there last Sept and this was the reason that one of the locals told me.

That is because in 2000 they brought in an MOT scheme and I think an incentive scheme to buy newer stuff.

During their first year of operation over 80% failed the test and that didn't include lighting defects because they let them away with them for a while.

Posted

That's a shame, I can see why a lot of old British-registered tin ends up over there then - they have nothing left to buy.

Posted

Being Irish of course I spent half my life there, up to the mid 90's the abandoned tat was breathtaking, I have seen Bentley's, Jag's all manner of reasonalbly exotic tat. The Jags and big fords were usually ex Garda (old bill) but you would not believe the amount of dead hearses and limos. That Yank hearse is a 1948 Dodge I believe, made in the UK or Canada, I have seen loads of them mostly around Leitrim, Donegal and Sligo. Yanks in general were popular with the wealthy and as Taxis and Funeral cars, The hearses I've seen were mostly Mk 3 & 4 Zephyrs and Zodiacs, Mk 1 & 2 Grandads but on the exotic side I've spotted Mk 1 Humber Hawks, 1955 Chevrolet Air (not Bel Air), 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, Dodges, Ford Galaxie 500's, Rolls Royces etc, I will do my research later but I believe Duffys were the big hearse builders and were pretty much respected worldwide.

Posted

The Dodge is really nicely appointed, I wouldn't mind shuffling off the mortal coil in the back of it. It is indeed in Donegal.Speaking of the old bill, Northern Irish police seem to have relatively shitey cars. I saw an early MG ZT-T, and several pre-2002 Vectras, one unmarked. Great stuff! Much more down to earth than the police here who get new BMWs and Range Rovers every couple of years. And of luxury taxis - I saw a post-Bangle BMW 7-series taxi in Ennis.

Posted

The old bill here in NI have some seriously tasty stuff - my best mate is a sergeant and he's been driving (among others)Evo XRange Rover SportGolf R32VW Phat-one W12Some rally-prepped Subaru thingsAudi RS4The ZT and ZT-T models mentioned are nearly all V8 (the Mustang jobbies). Contrary to popular belief, MT do "breathe" on them.King of the hill, mind you, is still the Tangi.Believe it or not, the demise of the Sierra Cosworth, the Capri 2.8i and the MG Montego Turbo is still a source of much head shaking and "ah, what a shame"

Posted

Great spots, the hearses are extremely spooky. The bakers van is a MK1 or 2 Transit.

Heres a pic of a Scottish one :)

We used to get taken to school on some right rough old crocks, (some of which were ex-Lothian Craig, as they were burgandy and had maps of edinburgh stuck inside them)

Most were Leyland Atlantean. Ocassionally got the odd Bristol Double Decker, which seemed a bit pokier lol.

Posted Image

lol this is almost identical in everyway.

Posted Image

And this type of Bristol

bloody hell that brings back memories - these were THE bus of my childhood decked out in Edinburgh city colours (maroon - like the Heart of Midlothian FC) they even had maroon vinyl seats

Are they big on tax and MOT etc. there? I visited Eigg in 1978 and all their vehicles magically moved off-road when there was a policeman on the ferry. There were numerous cars that had clearly been left where they expired, and a Mk2 Cortina joined that group during my stay.

hebridees are great for kit and shite.MOT/Tax etc is dependent on whether the island is private or not and whether or not the roads are public. If so then MOT, tax etc but on the smaller islands (like Eigg) most if not all roads are private (although this might not be the case on Eigg anymore since the island was bought by the crofters form that mad german artist (the one whou bought it off Schellenberg)) - what is it about Germans and islands?anyway, I wander.....as many of the smaller islands like Rum and Eigg have no car ferry service if you want a car on them you have to ship it in at some expense hence most cars are bough as kit and then driven to destruciton before bering abandoned in fields, bogs, barns etc usually with an old tarp in them. They make good wind breaks for rolling a ciggy in the usual gale you get up there so they do provide a public service of sorts!

Here's some more rubbish for you

Don't see many of these any more, which is a shame as I think they look pretty sharp, especially high spec ones like this

Posted Image

It's nice to see a bog standard Beetle, it looks un-restored and quite scabby, but seems to be in daily use. Heroic

Hey could this been the latest scene mod? To set off your roof rack nicely, just add an old Action Man* vehicle (DUKW stylee in this case).

(*Other action figures are also available)

Okay - I know it's been left on end under a roost, but I'd love to think the whole car looked like this after driving through some sort of bird-shit storm - perhaps it belonged to an official from the pigeon fanciers association and ended up this way after the start of every race?
