Modern shonky diesel citroens..

Anything horrific with these at all?

Driving the Fronterrorvision daily is going to destroy my wallet in pez, and driving the new beetle every day will destroy my spine, so I'm naturally gravitating toward something mid sized garlic flavored and wafty.

A C5 HDI would fit the bill... one's come on my radar relatively locally for banger money.

How terrible are they, what goes wrong?

On my ramps today is a 63 plate relay that has rubbed a hole in the coolant pipe at 61k and last week it was a Berlingo with a knackered DPF but other than that our fleet has been pretty reliable (said while clutching a wooden desk).

rang the chap up, to be told that someone came to look yesterday, and that he's not driven it for 8 months, but has found out its developed a suspension fault...

I'm out.

I'd avoid. Suspension is usually bagged out, go for the equivalent diesel in a 406. There's one for sale near me in Sheffield if that's any good. £495 I think he wants, tested for a year. At a garage like but it is what it is.

my uncle is still bombin about in his, tho he fit a fox last week, n that busted off the bottom hose; he got a replacement hose, but it keeps burstin out of the rad connection (on a wire C type clip that holds this in).... he boiled it dry both times, but replenished the coolant, n all seems well - I couldn't see any evidence of HGF....

his is much abused, at this stage n everything bar the engine seems to give some degree of jip; rear calipers regularly seizing up, an appetite for the usual ARB links, and all door handles- both inner n outer seem to be made of kinder toy grade plastic... it also has an appetite for batteries, n the onboard 'traffic' woman droid never seems to shut up...

For future reference, early 2.0HDis (8v) are pretty much bombproof, I've got one in my Berlingo on 170k, never needed anything except servicing and a cambelt.

The 1.6HDi is the NO NO NO HORROR WHY AVOID one, same as Ford 1.6TDCi and has a serious turbo munching habit amongst other problems.

my uncle's is indeed, the 2.0 HDi; and as you say, they are a very hard engine to kill, n seem to soldier on, whatever is thrown at them - my brother had a silver 206 van with one in it; it was an ex builder's formans steed n much abused - every oil seal n gasket was blown, n the engine was also burning quite a bit of oil; the whole back end of the van was black with oil, n it was well down on power...

...I drove up 'in tandem' with him, to an auction in the midlands as he didn't have the heart to sell it privately - it was very clean body wise, so sold quickly...

...low n behold, a year later it turned up local'ish with a young lad driving it; again it was oil black at the back end n was slowin down traffic behind to a crawl, I was amazed to see it still ploddin away...

I liked my c5 comfy as fuck good on derv reliable enough.. But i much prefer the audi ive got now, If its cheap take a punt why not!

110BHP ones go well enough dont need more power than that realistically ;) C5's handle better than you would imagine..

Also they've got a fuck off amount of load space.. Most have a shit radio reception by now though and/or a shagged CD player, So gr8 if you like the gentle thrum of the HDI engine.

Good heaters too.

I had an 03 c5 hdi for three years. Was very reliable, fairly rapid (was the 110) had no dpf (fap) and supped diesel. If it's been sitting for a while, I'd hazard that the battery is just a little tired and has caused the suspension fault. Of course, it could be any number of other issues...

Supposedly the 1.6 PSA unit has been extensively revised since it was fitted to the current gen Focus, not so prone to turbot failure, but time will tell!

It's a good engine if people would just change the fucking oil every 10k !

But its on long life oil mate, full of magic potion that keeps it clag-free for 30k miles.

I don't like modern cars as a rule, but I flipping hate C5s. Too big, wallowy, slow, hideous to look at, uncomfortable, horrid static-inducing velour seats. The suspension makes me feel a bit sick, and the electrics seem to be marginal at best.

My top tip: avoid
