Anybody want to play cars with me this weekend - This is what Shitefest 2016 should have been like!

Front discs, when it came out of winter storage the brakes stuck on a bit and the garage who took it for MOT said they had to free them off but they were not bad. After that when I had not used the car for a week or more the brakes would drag for the 1st mile or so and then everything was fine. 2CV register day I drove 5 miles and stopped for petrol and then the brake pedal had gone to the floor and smelt hot. I limped it home and the first person who said they would sort them never turned up and the next person, there was a mix up with an email address and they did not get my details so assumed I no longer wanted the job done and now he is on holiday.

Odd, could be the master cylinder. The only trouble I've ever had with 2cv brakes is the rear drums- the lining fell off and jammed. The fronts are usually very reliable- there's very little to them. In about 150,000 miles of 2cving I've only needed to change the pads. ( and one set of discs). Are the handbrake pads fully clear?

I've known some 2cvs from the mid-late 80s have seizing caliper pistons which couldn't be sorted by the usual methods, it's always a combo of lower grade materials, chassis without undertrays and well-worn pads left in for ages allowing the elements to attack the pistons along with a lightly used car which doesn't cover many miles.

Best replaced in pairs, dragging brakes on a 2cv can't be sorted with a heavy right foot and definitely remove the cardboard heater tubes which run close to the calipers until the prob is sorted - otherwise fire hazard.

Would like to have been there this weekend, unfortunately family and other stuff in the way - it only takes about 30 mins to replace both front calipers when you've done it a few times before (usually for disc replacement). I've even got a couple of new ones in a box. Definitely worth checking the brake pedal to master cylinder free play, but if the m/cyl and pedal box haven't been touched then it's highly unlikely to have adjusted itself.

What a fantastic afternoon playing with Mr and Mrs Cylinder's collection of dangerous old agricultural equipment :) My dad got the Allen Scythe running and it really is a terrifying beast! Going back tomorrow for more fun.

/\ /\ What's that contraption you are playing with there? I like the hats guys, you need more pipes though to finish the look. 8)

That's the Allen Scythe. Bloody lethal contraption with a Briggs & Stratton engine connected to a great big blade that runs all the time the engine is on. It has a tendency to run away from its operator...

Well that was epic. Both dumpers now work and I have video proof. Thanks again to Chris and Claire for such a fantastic weekend of tinkering and to Mark and Anthony for coming along too. Will sort out some more photos tomorrow but here's some crazy guys on farm machines to give you a flavour of the shenanigans we got up to .

Shock news from today is the silver Rover 114 GSi that spat water out after doing the head gasket is fine today, round the field, we left it idling and the fan cuts in and out and the temp gauge sits steady below a half. Hairnet even tried it backwards round the field and it was still fine.

So now what does it need for an MOT?

That looks like an episode of Midsomer Murders, where the village committee are trying to get the alternative cricket pitch sorted out after the local big-wig has banned them from using the usual one on his land. The next thing to happen will be that when mowing they will suddenly find his dead body in the long grass.

Having off roaded an old Range Rover for some years I bought a twin cylinder 12v air pump that draws too much current for a cigar lighter, today it coped with the digger tyre.

When driving a 2 Ton 4WD dumper it is important to lean into the corners.

Presumably it also works backwards, and you can let the digger tyre down to jump start the car?

By all means tow start a small dumper with a small tractor but a large dumper with a non working decompression lever needs a 7 1/2 ton pull!

That looks like some fantastic antics. Sorry we couldn't be there. Maybe the next Shitefest needs to be a week long.

You should have been here guys, we have had so much fun getting things working this weekend, you could have been on the end of a heavy chain been dragged alone by an unstoppable digger with no brakes while wrestling with no power steering on a ram steering dumper, at the same time trying to work out what gear you need for a tow start and where it is and how does the decompression lever work. If only the Shitefest 2016 weather had been like this we could have played with all this broken and worn equipment!

Mrs Cyl is very grateful for all the help we received this weekend getting our stuff going, thanks to you all.

I'm really sad I can't come!

Me too!

Curse my work-filled weekends.

The field's looking a world away from June's quagmire.

Glad to see a successful and fun time was had by all. Sorry to have not made an appearance - as usual I had underestimated the enormity of the decorating task I'd undertaken this weekend. The Christ! Le-Voyager did also receive attention that stopped the exhaust heat shields' bid for freedom though, and another chapter was started in the presidential Renner's parking brake fixerating saga, plus quite a lot of skirting board got gloss paint applied to it, which kept Mrs CW happy.
