Xantia of Desires - Farewell xantia!

I had a lovely drive into work this morning, its so smooth and comfortable.

I have a drive to do at lunchtime to collect some stuff, looking forward to it!

Sit rep of 'issues' so far:

The radio doesn't turn on and off with the ignition, I have to turn it 'off' when I park up

The buttons on the steering wheel don't work. Bub said that Moog mentioned something about a circuit board, does this ring a bell with any of the many previous owners?

The wheel shake (meh, leaving that for now)

Central Locking (meh, leaving that for now)

Can one get cubby holes to replace the (not working) keypad? Also, is the car ever likely to need the keypad ever again (if I have the battery out or anything?)

Back doors are a bit stiff, some lubricant needed I think!

Front seats are a bit torn, will think about replacements at some point in the future, no rush yet though

Do not under any circumstances plug in the keypad! I changed battery with no Ill effects. The central locking wasn't so much an issue to me as I was usually the only one in it so never investigated. I also never had stereo out to see why it didn't turn off. It does get thirsty if you boot it though!

No, I was going to bin the keypad off completely, but didn't know if I should keep it in the shed 'just in case'. and what those 'just in case' issues might be. Is the code even known to us anymore?

I agree about the central locking, I've solved that by just not locking it... Will have a look, in case somethings come adrift, so the system thinks it cant lock hence the bouncing, but for now its not a problem. Need to tape the fob key back together, using the other key for now as it fits on my keyring.

I think it's central locking module in passenger door. Keep keypad in shed if needs be. I don't know code either

Cubby holes exist to replace the keypad, they pop up on eBay sometimes.

The steering wheel buttons didn't work when Chompy or I owned it, Chompy did investigate but couldn't get anything out of them.  I can't remember what the problem was, but I remember he couldn't fix it.

The radio issue rings a bell, but not from my ownership.  Chompy might know better on that one.

If you don't use the back doors very often they do get a bit stiff.  They were always better in Chompy's ownership than mine because he used them daily and I used them maybe monthly.

When I had it, the central locking was a bit funny but did work.  From memory, the passenger door didn't work properly, you had to unlock that separately to the rest but the other three would work on the fob.  That's possibly related to the missing lock button on the passenger front door (which has been missing since at least when Moog had it) and I suspect in its past someone had tried to break in because that passenger door has a slightly bent window frame.

On the seats front, I did hand-sew the seam back together on the driver's seat but ideally it needs the cover removing and resewing properly.  I expect the passenger one has gone the same, it seems to be a bit of a weak point on the cover design.

Oh, and the code for the keypad is scratched into the handle on the tailgate.

Posted

Cool, I'll find the code then and write it on the keypad and lob it in the shed, and try to find a cubbyhole (or see if I can make one out of card or summat.

Yes, the passenger seat cover is proper ripped, the drivers is just starting. I might have a crack at sewing it, or find some xantia seats if I find a breaker local to me, or just buy seat covers. It doesn't bother me too much as I can slide my phone into the hole on the passenger seat and it doesn't slide about! When Eva goes back to school it'll have a car seat on it anyway so will be hidden!

Posted

It was like that when I got it from Moog.

Random place to write it! "OK, shout them out, I have the compass ready'...

Or 'Shit, I've backed up proper close to a wall, but need the keycode...'

I'd leave the keypad in until you've got a cubby to replace it.  It's not that pretty without it there which is part of the reason I left it in, unplugged.

Echo everything above -

Steering wheel buttons. I had a look and tried plugging in the ribbon. It didn't work so ignored it.

Radio probably just need perm feed changing

The seats were from a 250k 405 so survived well.

Code is on rear handle - Ruff or someone else did that.

Central locking. From memory, If you left the passenger one down then it would work from the key. If the passenger one had been opened then it would just lock/unlock.

I mostly left it unlocked, so wasn't an issue.

Other thing to note is that the fuel filter is a diesel BMW one. Remember that if you need to change it.

Not sure if its the Xantia I'm remembering or another motor I've had in the past. But I remember one car you could change the fuse position to make the radio and cigarette lighter wiring permanently live. Steering wheel controls will only work with the original radio plus I seem to remember they had a problem with the wires in the slip ring behind the steering wheel. Think theres a few xantia's being broken on french car forum.

Mmmm ok, will ask about that on the FCF. The steering wheel buttons were one of the things I was most looking forward to on the car!

Will have that out at some point then and see if it's blatent which wire is which

405, that's a good point, will see if any are being broken locally to me

That's what it's doing. I just leave it unlocked now, I may keep the fob in the glovebox incase I need to lock it when out and about for any reason, it sits either at home or at work 97% of the time, so no massive issue

Bub did say that. I don't think it needs changing yet, when it does I'll ask what specific one I need! Not planning on running it on veg for a while anyway, although I do need to grab the 20l left at chris's after SF16, but that's only 20l

Lock/unlock is one of two things. Either a sticky actuator in the door, or frayed wiring in the joint between door and body. Doubt it's a locking module issue.

If the stereo works without the ignition, I'd consider that a massive bonus!

It works fine without the ignition on, but also doesn't turn off with the ignition turned off, so I need to remember to physically push the off button when I get out, something I've never done before in a car!

Ooooh will have a look at that, thanks!! Of course, I could do that and it looses its memory every time, which would possibly be more annoying...

I'll chime in on the whole switching the permanent and switched live feeds around.

I've noticed this is quite a common thing on PSA group cars.

Posted

I like the radio to work without the keys in :)

I'd be inclined to leave the unplugged keypad in place as a deterrent.

Also, it will be insured as having its original factory immoboliser fitted, unless you've told them otherwise.

I ain't told no one nuffink...

Actually, I had reason to drive to Ruislip earlier for off topic reasons, and a pound coin in the top coin slot wedges my phone nicely up against the centre console. So it might stay!

I grabbed 5 minutes earlier whilst it was raining. First, I slid the blade back into the wiper at this end, so it now contacts the screen

I then found my new, still sealed bottle of glass polish, and cleaned the inside of the windscreen, rear view mirror and inside of the drivers window

and peeled off the faded, bubbling sticker

This left some sticky residue, but luckily I put my zippo fluid back in yesterday

Residue gone!

There was some in the top corner too

Bye!

The glass buffed off nicely, so now I will be able to see when the sun is low hopefully. It has highlighted the scratches on the outside of the glass though...

I then cleaned the wiper blades, and they dont smear now, however I did find that, somewhere in the 97 miles I've driven today, I;ve lost a bloody hubcap

post-5612-0-69237700-1470688356_thumb.jpg

Which annoyed me alot as I quite liked them. Fucksticks.

Papped a couple of shots of her in her new home, it's a tad trickier parking it than the ZX was

Then went to Asda to collect the shopping as they wanted a bastard fiver to deliver, no £1 slots left. So I popped to fetch it

Then took an updated fleet shot once home

That's all the excitement for tonight! Need to start saving some pennies for wheel balancing now, it ruins the epic ride!

My Xantia feels amazing with the alignment and wheel balancing properly sorted.

I'd love to find some properly retro wheel trims for mine too. I've been driving around on bare steelies for ages as I can't find any I really like (well, I've found a fair few on ebay but I'm not paying £40+ for a set of fecking wheel trims!)

Ok. You will need a lhf door mechanism as it was moody in my ownership. I reckon I might have a non keypad centre console too, buttons on the wheel I think we're the clock spring but since the airbag was OK I elected not to fuck about it it. From memory if they were plugged back in it used to change the station when you turned the wheel.

Ace info Ruffgeezer! Is the lock mechanism easy to change? I might try and have the doorcard off one day and see if anythings come adrift, then soak it in spray grease and see if that kicks it into life. It's not urgent though.

Yes please to the non keypad console if you have one!

I've been reading about clock springs on the french car forum today, and it seems that working ones are getting rare, stories of people fucking about for ages getting ones out of scrapyard cars to find it's more fucked than the one they were replacing. Reckon a good clock spring would sort it then? I'm not far from CitroJim (took the XM to see him), so may make a thread on FCF and see if he's up for another visit for a look, he would possibly have some as well. He pulled a turbo sensor out of nowhere for the XM when he found out it had died! He lives 8 miles from Amys dad so it shouldnt be too hard, and I can get a Lexia run over the old girl to see whats what!
