i currently drive a subaru legacy r reg 1997 and am looking to get a toyota hilux surf now i need a bit of advice about surfs as i no feck all apart they are 4x4 s lol

I think they will all be grey imports as they were never officially sold by Toyota UK. They are also getting on a bit as they stopped making them more than 10 years ago.

This would be enough be put me off instantly since with grey imports you can't get any proper history - why do you want one and would you consider anything else similar such as a Land Cruiser Colorado or a Shogun?

I would always plump for a UK market car with proper history.

shogun sounds good never give a thought to the land cruiser route may even go as afr as a landy or rangey

I love Shoguns, They are great cars, Drive very good on road and are mean't to be just as good off road.Nice and roomy as well, Much better than a Disco IMHO.

They were sold briefly in the mid-90s, they look very restrained compared to the imports with no garish colours or graphics and steel wheels. Can't find any proof of its existence, but I remember an elderly man in the village owning one from new.

All these 'grey import' jobbies seem to be unfeasably expensive for old cars with dubious histories and, coming from Japanese domestic market presumably less than adequate rust protection. Plus they scream 'not registered for VAT block paved driveway specialist'.

I think the UK model was badged a 4runner rather than a surf. I kinda like them, but I take it they're not that durable then?

Hilux Serfs crack cylinder heads for fun.

I believe that it's only the 2.4 that does this. Think the 3.0 is far better. They all rust though and who really knows what you're getting with a grey import? As a fellow Legacy owner, I'd say stick with it!

That was a normal Hilux pickup as opposed to the Surf SUV but it must be pretty hard wearing on that basis

Oh yeah, that was it. 4 runner. Different rear light units on the UK spec ones. Don't think they sold that many.Having seen the frankly lunatic things that someone on Retro Rides has got up to in his Mitsubishi Delica (early, boxy one) I think even I'd be tempted by one of those instead.
