Car bought from garage - problems arisen - NOW RESOLVED

Cash refund issued this afternoon.

To be fair to EAST CLEVELAND CARS of LINGDALE it was perfectly hassle free.

To those local, I gather it's recently been taken over as its what I know as the old East Cleveland Motors but no longer owned by John Alderson & Peter List (who's a pal of mine and now has a garage in Middlesbrough), but with the same staff.

An unexpectedly easy but fair outcome I reckon.

In other news the refund was spent straight away buying the Passat from me so happy days all round !

Does that mean it was clocked?

Funny you should say that - it was one of those instances (which I'm sure hoping others have experienced) where the car magically gained around 400 miles between me putting down the deposit and picking it up 48hrs later.

Dealers who do it from home who don't have a personal vehicle so use the shit out of whatever they have "in". Just don't.

shame that! They are nice motors! I was after a 530d not so long ago or even a 525d touring but I couldnt find much for the £1200 budget I had at the time.

I just spent 2 months looking for 525/530d touring for the son in about £2000 range, it was bleak. We bought a 2006 Honda 2.2 tdci estate in the end and the cast off 247k 530d estate has sunk down to me. It's a nice old thing, welcoming in it's own shabby way.

A very decent outcome! What did they have to say?

Shame as it looked bloody tidy.

FFS it's a £1300 car what does he expect?

I was a bit pissed when I posted this last night hence being quite so direct but having seen what the car is my point is thus:

It's an ageing premium car bought for less than 4% of its original value yet people are extremely quick to want to burn the seller at the stake which I think is rather unrealistic

The dealer manned up. I like it. Kudos to him. I have only sold what I have had confidence in,but that is dodgy as you havent a crystal ball.

Giving a full refund is sign of a man standing on. Good for him.

Whilst I understand your point to a degree, unless buying a spares/repair or a known project I would expect a £1300 to be 'usable' which this one wasn't. I've bought cars for less than £100 which have covered 10k+ without issue, for example. Equally he's bought my Passat this afternoon for £1300 and it's covered more than 30 miles and lasted longer than a couple of hours. That's an aging car at a fraction of its value too with similar mileage too.

Sounds like he got a good result in the end.

You can spend a grand or two on a car and get stuffed and spend £100 and get something that does you 6-12 months. You pays your money and takes the chance. Anything can be trouble at that money. I often preach the virtues of Mk3 Mondeos, you could get a tidy 1.8 petrol and find out it burns oil like no tomorrow, on the other hand you could get a diesel TDCI that's supposedly known for trouble and it go on for thousands. Conventional wisdom says the petrol is the better buy on the face of it but as ever at this sort of money you buy on condition irrespective of the engines reputation.

For that sort of money and age, I'd expect the vehicle to be able to safely get an occupant from A to B (which I believed this example struggled to do) - unless it was sold as unable to. However for that sort of money, age and type of vehicle, for £1300, I would expect stuff like not all the electric heated seats working, central locking may be occasionally temperamental or the AC not working, etc.

Glad to hear that the dealer pulled thru ok. I suspect the Sold with no warranties is either something he's done for years, and/or to scare off people from doing so in the first instance.

I could never do the second-hand car business at this sort of price point. So much of a high risk of selling duds, little margin in the cars and then being bartered down even lower. After rent/taxes/business rates/faulty vehicles/employees/etc there is sweat feck all going to be left.

And if you did sell dodgy tat, your customers wouldn't be feeling blue for very long due to the sheer number of times you would pay them their refund....

Quite correct. I once sold a Punto with about 60 quid profit in it. Week or so later, power steering went. Money had been spent,so cost me 170 quid to fix. Thats life. Taught me not to think of a car as "gone" for a couple of weeks. Saying that, back in the day, there wasnt much to go wrong. I stopped buying and selling when management lights started lighting up whenever they felt like. Bring back the early 90's, the worst things wrong with cars were rusty arches etc. Car game=mugs game now

Spoke to the daughter of one of the folk near to my garage. Lovely girl, now works for a large car sales group. The dodgy tricks of the trade are alive and well, such as parking a slightly dinged car damaged side against the wall, customer drives off, not our problem. She said that she hates it when that happens and refuses to behave that way herself. She said that they make about 60 quid on a new car and about 300 to 400 quid on a used car. Not huge money in the scheme of things.

£1000+ cars are fucking shit full stop.  ALL sub £400 cars are excellent in comparison.  This is my finding from my experience.
