PSA Super-mini Shootout + surprise sell off

The 1.4 petrols are surprisingly rapid as they weigh nothing, the ex gf used to have a 1.4 Furio Saxo and I used to have no problem keeping up with bigger engined stuff, they had a decent lump of torque, I found the diesel 106 my brother had not that great in comparison, the heavy lump spoiled the handling and it had no pas either, was definately miserly on fuel though.

I used to have a 106 1.4 petrol and it was a hoot, nice and nippy and handled well. If I drove sensibly I could get 40mpg on my commute, doesn't sound that much I s'pose but it was a mix of town and A roads. It did shed its rear brake shoes at one point tho, I arrived at (i think) Barrett's house with smoke coming off the rear wheels...

I've driven a couple of 1.5 diesels as well, and while they perform adequately I'd take the petrol (for the laughs) over the extra 15-20 mpg every day.

Insurance want £31/month for the rest of the policy to swap to this wee beastie, the profiteering bastards.  Even as a new policy they want 4 times the price I paid for the petrol Escapade to insure it for the year...

I need to take out the recycling now

Anyway Cameron, this 106 will go on a cla$$ic policy you know...

Even if you need to take out a new policy with Footman James, it should be about £100pa for you I reckon.

Hear Hear.

Mine is now £225/year for the 106 with Footman James, and I'm a bone-fide idiot, and a young one at that.

Posted

Is that with a limited mileage?  Peter James won't let you have more than 3000 miles, and the last time I spoke to FJ they wanted mucho ££££ (Remember I don't live in a rural setting!)

Posted

They did change many of their rules earlier this year, it's gotta be worth 15 mins on the phone to them.

I now have a multi-car fleet policy for all mine that are on the road. £300-and-something for me andt' Mrs, who is a new driver. They allow a "modern" (or two?) in the fleet too, and no mileage limit.

Sorry for the thread highjack M_Flakes! We should have started our own thread for this red thing.

How are your 106/Saxo investigations going?

"Underpowered"? It's all in the mind really. I can still scare people in mine :D

The red one's a TUD5, my blue one's the 1360cc.

Have a go next time you're up...

Maybe not underpowered then, just badly geared between 1st and 2nd - there would be hills (like the one up to the tarn where it finally cooked its head gasket, but the one in particular I remember was heading out of a hairpin esses on the way to Beckwithshaw) where the TUD3 in the Metro wouldn't have the torque to cope with going from 1st to 2nd, so you'd spend all of the steep bit in 1st on the governor, holding other people up.  I suspect the TUD5 has enough torque to deal with that.

I do know exactly what you mean, my TUD3 seems to have quite widely spaced gears, and/or be generally very highly geared for what it is. 90% of the time, coming home up our hill, I need to change down to first after the last steep bend (where Will had his first A-frame miss-hap). Some of you will know it well. Most cars can manage it in second if you plan ahead and keep your toe down; the Seicento was the opposite, it could sometimes be persuaded all the way home in third! Quite remarkable for a 1.1, but it weighed less than a wet fart and was proper under-geared. Great fun.

This blue 106 of mine seems to built as a hyper-miler's wet dream because of the above.

All three of the 1.5's I have driven (early and late ones) do seem to have more normal gearing, giving the impression they have more grunt. I haven't driven one at speed back-to-back with mine, and I haven't been above 65 in mine, but I bet it would cruise very happily at motorway speeds.

No worries - I added the for sale tag - hope that's ok?

I phoned a seller to go and see an early 1.4 Saxo just outside Manchester but they're not around this weekend. I might have gone off the idea a bit (for now at least) as I took the Justy out for a blast around the Dales and it was absolutely fab! It just doesn't seem fair to push it on the long motorway journeys I occasionally have to make (70mph@4000rpm).

Of course, yes, thank you! (on Will's behalf.)

4k rmp at 70 is frantic - crikey! I see what you mean. The Japs though, they love it, it's just not a relaxing experience.

The Saxo (or 106) 1.4 I imagine would be pretty much like a slightly less hard-core AX GT. So pretty perky. The last one I saw was this one...

...which was laying down some respectable times at Crail :D

4k @ 70 is what the 1.1 engined 106 does too, IIRC, and I was doing 2,400 miles a month in one at the start of the year...!

That's a bit revvy! TUD5 has a 'long' gearbox, 70mph is 3000rpm. In fact it's the most highly geared 106/ Saxo 'box,  apart from the Saxo VTR, inexplicably..

1.5D is an excellent all rounder imo. I never find mine that slow, infact they're faster mid range than thd 1.1 petrol!
