Top-flight stuff as always Rab. I love the way the colour of rust always seems to "pop" in your photos.

(PS, your Sad Skodas are Sorry SEATs, but they're all the same really.)

What's the story with the plant machinery at the mine? It's a crying shame seeing it deteriorate like that, especially the borked Fergie.

Posted

I think some of it is still in use, the Haulamatic certainly moves around.

Is that mine tunnel the one beside the buildings or the one in the hole? The last time I was there it looked as if the underground workings were in use again.

Posted

If I lived locally I'd ask them if I could buy that Fergie for its scrap value (i.e. half a licked Twix). I'd love to restore one of those.

I love the highlands

The mines is a funny place...partly organised old dump ground..part tractor restoration workshop..heavy machinery plant..cows and goats...its a great 20-21st C. fuck up croft...the older mines have to be accessed by Ariundle...their flooded and are extraordinary colors due to the mineral content...and deer routinely commit suicide down them..ah..A fence..ill jump that...

Was this picture taken at Balmoral? The Princes Royal must have applied for SORN whilst waiting for the points to be removed from her licence.

It was sad to travel all the way to strontian mine to find all the cars either gone or buried under earth/rocks

Posted

Is it safe in the Strontian mines? After all it had a radioactive element named after it.

All good, but that Leyland Roadtrain is the winner for me.

Fantastic, always enjoy these posts both for the content and the image quality....That Granny needs to come with me.

Yes..yes..and i think it is naturally radioactive...but i think its more kinda Superman V. Kryptonite factor...you would need a big lump to be in danger

What like the sort of big lump you could dig up in say a mine? ;)

Strontium-88 is (from memory) the isotope you find naturally occurring on Earth (I.e. here), strontium-90 is the radioactive one from nuclear fission. ;)

Just caught up with this. Excellent spots!

Words can not describe my want for the Princess, a bucket list car for me. The mk2 Granny looks pretty good too.

Posted

Is it just me or does the snow track look like the offspring of a Land Rover that's shagged a DS?

Back in 1991..on a visit home from Germany...theres a cool old shed in Strontian...which has a great history.Peering through the window..i could make out an Austin.I never forgot it..and always remained convinced it was still there..so yesterday and I went round to the croft where old Mr Millin lives to speak to him.His croft house is so cool..like a timewarp..60s wallpaper...50s carpet..and he has a slight mobility problem.Sure enough..the Austin is still there..must be nrly a record in storage years,,it was his fathers..when he died in the 70s..it was put in there..and left. He'l allow me proper access once we can get him down the hill..but when i left..i noticed that the window was broken..so snuck a photo. It seems to be in still pretty good condition..and have ascertained its a Mk3 1300.-1970.

IMG_4034_zpstmqsso4n.jpg

and in another one of his sheds..on the verge of collapse is a Chevette.

Another extended member of the family collects me at Port Askaig..whereby Im delivered to Heather House..to become Rab The Butler for my Uncle Sir John..duties entail catering..polishing silver...hand washing porcelain and grilling sausages.I can only walk as far as Port to collect The Telegraph..so the other side of the island wont be inspected until July on my return.
