It's a newish car so nothing can be wrong with it.

Parked next to a 2014 BMW 1 Series today (nasty things) and spotted this almost bald front tyre and the other side was just as bad. Still, the owner probably thinks that as it's a BMW and starts every morning it must all be okay so need to worry, not even for the sake of the two small children that are transported in it. I doubt the owner will do anything about it until it goes in for a service or worse, until it's submitted for its first MoT in 2017.

I think it's fair to say us shite drivers are far more diligent on this kind of thing.

With those 17/18 inch wheels and low profile run flats it probably costs more than one of their monthly payments per tyre!!

OEM tires only seem to last 40K miles anymore. Two years into the loan and you're looking at a whole new set. I prefer 15's and 16's with some section height and much* less cost.

One of our neighbours has a brand new M3, and it sounds like a fucking tractor. Wakes us all up when he goes off to work at 6:50am every morning.

Which is weird as every other M car I see is pretty much silent at idle.

I thought they'd be stupid prices too, 17" runflats on my lads 325 estate, £80 (still dear enough) gets you mid range non Chinese stuff like Firestone.

I was quite surprised at the prices really, you can see why someone who might feel a bit vulnerable if a puncture stopped them might prefer runflats to at least be able in most cases to continue a journey to somewhere public lit and safe.

I went into my local friendly tyre place a couple of years back and the owner was outside in tears. I asked what was up and he said he had to come outside as he was pissing himself laughing so much it was hurting. This guy had come in and told them all how amazing his negotiation skills were because he had managed to get £500 off the asking price of an x5 as it needed a new set of tyres, apparently his face was interesting to see when he was told it would be getting on for a grand for a full set.

People like that are the reason why an mot is so important - they would only do tyres when they are forced to .

Modern generic eurobox with pretty average build / reliability but with a thin veneer of quality to fool gullible badge driven people on lease deals

Why are they nasty. Are you in possession of information I should be aware of?

The 1 Series has no redeeming features in my view, but that's just my humble onion. Particularly owners who buy 10 year old shagged out ones and think they're still a premium buy.

The footwell on them seems to be sloping away down to the pedals to me .

Calm down! It's the Internet.......we make sweeping generalisations because it keeps things simple. Doesn't need to be true or even based on fact.

Mind you......not nice thems 1s are they........a bit 'I wanted a proper BMW but my boss would only get me this cos the lease is less then a focus'

They'll be runflats at about £150 a corner.

I can get four Goodyears (probably Michelin, Continentals etc too) fitted for A TENNER more for the Swift. Modern cars are just madness sometimes.

To be fair, I took a 2014 135i out for a blast yesterday and it's flipping mega. 3.0 engine with about 310-ish bhp in a little 1 Series! It's a proper weapon. Unsurprisingly quite a few Cat D examples on Autotrader.

When was the last time anyone saw the police pulling random motorists for tyre checks?

I'm in the process of changing all my tyres for new decent makes onto refurbished alloys.  They'll probably never wear out with the mileage I do but after two motorway blow-outs on old tyres (the scary bit was being at the roadside with mental traffic/drivers not the fails) I'm not taking tyre safety lightly.

Local lad who gets the wheels done at £20ish a corner, then tyres 40-50 fitted depending on size fitted and balanced, so nice shiny rims properly shod for less than £300 a set is okay by me, specially as the rims are all period Fiat/Lancia too.

Here is the latest set, have to arse about getting right length new bolts though before I can fit them to some lucky car!

Black circles were the cheapest for run flats for the wife's 2011 1 series daily at £180 a corner. Kwik fit wanted £220. Fair enough it's an m sport with 245/35 18 y rated tyres. Quick call to the insurance company and khumos were fitted for £400 all in. I did warn her about running costs when she bought it. Service due, so will see how much the parts cost! Luckily I will do it myself so as I don't give a shit about resale as all of our cars are run until they die, so don't care about stamps in the book. Most of my cars have post it notes stuck all over the engine with all that has been done to remind myself.

40k miles!

I killed the OEM front tyres on a brand new Kia Picanto in 8k miles and the MoT history shows the rears followed at 21k

There are notes stuck on notes. As an IT person I should create some complicated database, but can't be arsed. Tippex pens are for highlighting timing marks.

BTW it's a 120d m sport with the BMW performance pack so puts out 225 horses. It's a fuckin laugh to drive. Luckily it's not my daily or my license would be long gone. I'll stick to the grand voyager and megane 1.5 dci.

/exit piston heads mode.

Is it wrong that I quite like the 1 Series saloon?

Wife's is the cabby version

Not at all although I disagree - IMHO the 1 coupe is the only current BMW that is decently proportioned.

The only others I've ever liked were the original 6 series and the 8 series - everything else is either pig ugly (most of 'em) or just really boring (3s and 5s)

I see a lot of late model BMWs with bald front tyres - I noticed one in ASDA the other day.  They seem really heavy on the outside edges of their tyres - I assume this is all down to BMW's fantastic suspension engineering (and the owners not noticing/not caring about illegal tyres).
