Importing from the USA

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have seen a car that I am considering purchasing in the USA but the guy who is selling it wants paying in silver coins and will not take cash.

Anyone see any problems with this if I could get hold of the coins or do you think its just some kind of scam?

Silver coins? The fuck?

Is this a poorly designed troll post?

If it's a guy called Judas Iscariot make sure you're all legal before you set off in the motor as he'll likely grass you up.

He will probably insist the test drive starts in Mexico and dont worry the boot locks fucked, rear suspension lowered.

He'll ship it for free as long as you promise to deliver the package he's leaving in the boot. To soho at 3am.

There are people who believe bullion is a better way to make substantial sales and purchases than cash.  The reasoning is that the bullion holds its value and you can't be taxed on it.  My work involves a lot of American weirdoes (I'm sorry guys, but if any of you are reading this you really are weirdoes, you've seen what you've asked me to draw) and I have encountered this opinion, some because they are attempting a very convoluted scam and some because they really believe it's a way to avoid tax and get the best value for money.

Obviously don't do it because of ALL THE REASONS.  It is a thing that people think is a reasonable request.  It's not, partly because it's no longer 1928 but mostly because it's stupid.

I have looked in all the dark recesses of paypal and cannot find the "pay seller in silver coins" option......

I would never consider paying for anything from abroad by any other means...unless I was there and handing over the cash myself or I could pay by credit card....

Having imported a car from th US myself and had problems in doing so, this sounds really stupid to me! If it were me, I'd definitely pass on this car and look for another with a normal seller who wants normal money.

What car is it?

Think Vulg has it although bullion value changes every day and you certainly can be taxed on it, it's just harder to track for the IRS.   Clearly a mentalist.

If you are looking at US cars the most important thing is a clear title, without this you are entering a whole world of pain.   Anything with 'salvage' or liens on the title will involve lining up at the county courthouse, not something that's easy to do if you live in England.

WHS.

Don't even look at cars without clear titles, and definitely don't do what I did and buy a car that has no title at all! Trust me, it's a right pain in the arse to fix this problem. I got lucky as the seller of my car was a decent guy and had 'contacts' shall we say in the DMV to overcome the problem.

Really I shouldn't have bought the car I did but I'm a bloody minded twat and liked it and from that point on nothing was going to get in my way! I should have done more research before spending money too...

What about bronze coins? Less risky, right?

Not a scam, more likely he is a Sovereign Citizen type nutter. Problem is that if he doesn't believe in the big bad government the chances that he's registered it, insured it, etc. tend towards zero.

Seems that Nigerian general's doing well for himself selling used cars these days.

Sounds like a weirdo.

P.S. I've got an extra hood that could use being drawed on... (sic)

Not a troll. Only been in contact via email and seems like a difficult customer and will give up little info on the car. I have seen, read, contacted loads of scammers and can usually spot them easily but this feels genuine. I have asked for his number to give him a ring so lets see if he gives it up. I will update accordingly.
