Engine oil at Lidls £11.99

Just been to Lidls and seen some 15w40 engine oil at £11.99 for 5 litres.

Should I get some for general use or do you think it will end in tears?

Is there really much difference between oils?

Fine if you have an older car, out of your list of cars I'm not sure what 15w40 would be suitable for, the Beetle? I buy 4.5l of 10w40 at Home Bargains for £9.99.

I used this in my 406. Will change at 6k miles. As long as it conforms to the required standards I can't see any problem with using cheap oil in an older car as long as you don't leave it in forever.

I try to change the oil in the daily every 6 months so it wont be staying in there for to long.

Is 15w40 fairly thick oil?

15W40 is probably okay for some older 2 valve engines like your Audi but maybe not for the multivalve Celica or your new millenium cars.

I use it in old 90's Di turbodiesels and as it says it exceeds the spec. required I see no point in worrying. Maybe Lidl are lying and its just 5 litres of rat piss, but the same could be said for oil from the big name brands. If a company as big as VW can lie how can you tell? At least all the beer I've drunk from Lidl seemed to have the correct lubricating qualities.

I got 5 litres of 10w/40 semi for the Nissan last weekend, it usually takes 3.5 litres to the max mark and the rest will go in mowers. Cheapest stuff I can find elsewhere is £12 for 4 litres at Halfords so I thought why not.

I got 12 5 litre cans of shell Rimula rt4 15w40 for 70 quid off gumtree ! I asked no questions 😄

I've been using that Morrisons Savers tenner for 4 litre stuff for years without issue.

I see B+M have 4l of summert similarly oily for £9.99.

I had a sumpful of fresh Valvoline leak out suddenly a while ago, fixed the leak and poured in Lidl lube and the engine was far smoother on it. Maybe some flat tappet lickers might comment as to if it has a ZDDP content.

In case anyone still cares...

I slopped 3l of a 5l container of Lidl's finest 10w/40 semi into the Nissan last weekend, along with a new oil and air filter and have done 500 miles this week to and fro a networking course in Suffolk and the Nissan has been happy as can be. No more or less noisy than it is on ECP's QX3 Oil that it usually gets, and at 2/3rds the cost of ECPs cheapest we seem to be onto a winner.

5/5 - will buy again. Shame they have such a limited range of grades but there.

If you get through 10W40 semi at a decent rate, ask your local ECP counter how much they charge for 20L containers of TripleQX

I paid £19.99 plus VAT the other day and £21.99 plus for 5w30 semi.

They used to do 20w50 in big tubs but haven't seen it for a while now :-(

I think when I was in there picking up the filters they were chopping it out at about £40 for 20 litres - substantially cheaper than 4x 5l containers I grant you, but since the Nissan only does about 4k a year now, and the Saab requires fancy-pants 5w-30 fully synth or bad thingstm happen. I tend to just buy 5l of each at a time.

Yeah that definitely wasn't on the price list I saw - I'm assuming there's a lot less demand for it from the trade these days but garages that specialise in older cars must get it in bulk from somewhere!

GM spec 5w30 fully synth was less than 40 plus VAT

Granted I'm a trade buyer but I by no means have access to proper low level pricing, very smal operation!

I did a double take at your post - I thought it said primula.

I've never put cheese in an engine.

I think it is worth a little extra to get a '10' rather than a '15' but I am sure it'll be ok anyway.

As above, I buy 20 litres at a time from ECP, I think the 10w40 is about £32 and the synthetic 5w40 a bit more but still very cheap per change.  Those of us who are local to each other could club together but it amazes me how fast it goes.

ECP have a BOGOF on oil now and again. I suppose the trick is to keep an eye out for the offers and stockpile some when they come up.

They had an offer through the week and I ordered some oil, only to get an email telling me off for not buying a filter.
