That's a good idea, use the R20 to lure people in like some sort of rusty 70's mermaid

Is there enough potential loving owners on here to justify a "Sierra base" style purchase and restoration?

As it was born on the wrong side of the alps for my taste my only involvement would be to chuck a few euro in the pot to see it kept in the fold - unless you could hammer a FIAT badge over the current one.

Don't panic, something will work out, unless you already owe the garage, in which case I would recommend a payday loan from Autoshite financial services*.

All the best with it.

*10000%APR Variable, term and conditions apply.  Your bollocks may be at risk if you do not keep up repayments.  Regulated by the Financial Goons Authority.  Complaints dealt with by "Big Dave".

Yeah thanks for the advice - love the payday loan joke, but both my balls are already in pawn! Lets see how it goes. May get offered a job, who knows?

I could potentially offer it an off-road parking space as a stay of execution if you can get it up to Middlesbrough.  I can't promise more than that but I feel I ought to pay-it-forward now I can, given how long the Renault was similarly stored for me by Kes when life dealt me a duff hand for a bit.

Have you got an image of the starter motor? I have a Renault starter motor lurking in the garage, but cannot remember what it came from.

Hi, it's one of these: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=12&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj59724mdLOAhWnD8AKHZZ3CmUQFghFMAs&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fitm%2FRenault-18-20-21-25-Fuego-Master-Trafic-Starter-motor-Lucas-LRS310-%2F271692597958&usg=AFQjCNH4_HmvXw6_fzP8Tw8QOC8-IOj9Uw

It would seem that it fits a number of different engines and cars

Pleasantly surprised to see another one going back on the road. Looks like there's some rust on the tailgate, and the car's obviously just been washed - mine looks lovely when wet too! That's not to detract from the fact it's clearly a smashing 1978/79 series 1 TS!

Check out carandclassic: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C779971

It's manual, not automatic - I feel that these cars are far better suited to an auto box, but that said, I get the feeling manual examples are rarer in the UK! Hats off to the seller for putting this back on the road - I say they fully deserve their full asking price for this, as believe me, recomissioning these can very easily cost more than £2200 all told!

I've just spotted that someone on Facebook is breaking this one, It's going through the crusher tomorrow, He's rolled it over and the screens gone and the tank has been punchered.

That reinforces all my prejudices about people on Facebook (apart from Trigger).

TBF I think he's been offering it on the Renault pages for £150 and no one was interested so is now scrapping it, he looks like a banger racer and he's sold the alloys.

That one just looked rotten beyond saving to be fair - You can't save them all  :common070: I'd have been tempted otherwise, to buy this as a donor car - even if only for the alloys! Having said that, tyres for those are TRX Michelins, very reasonable nowadays at just £220 a corner! Never mind, there may yet be more Renault 20s sleeping quietly in garages, undisturbed since the 1980s - every time one of these pops up for sale, it's invariably a "barn find", and I think "Surely there can't be any more sitting dormant in people's garages", but they keep on cropping up!

Fair enough I suppose if he's given it a go and stripped off any useful bits.

Does this now mean that you have to be on bloody Facebook to get parts for obscure cars these days? Nobody on Facebook wants it = nobody on the planet wants it? That's a bit shit if so.

Sorry, possible thread drift here.

I posted that one on a thread a few days back. Name and fuckbook group in my post. Sounds like it's possibly too late for parts...

Facebook seems to be the place for cars these days, It's where i found my Dolomite. Sadly you have to filter out a lot of wankers in the progress though.

There's a 20 in Calais in the middle of a roundabout stripped to the shell, painted white, and a flowerbed planted in the engine bay and interior - that would have been a happier end for this rotten pear!

Facebook book is how i shifted my cortinas. I'm not on it myself, but my mate put them on one of those abandoned old shit pages and they were gone pretty quick.

Well, such is life. You can only try so hard to sell something. If I had a Twenty, I'd gladly pay £150 and strip it of everything useful, but I don't.

So somebody mentioned the hanging seat backs to be found in renault 16s and early 20s. Pleased to find out today that mine has them:

And look what I found behind the seat back:

When you said hanging seat backs, I assumed they'd be a minging mess. Now I see what you mean. What's the purpose though? Is it for access into the rear seat area from the boot?

Just carrying flat loads, when you need more space basically. In less safety conscious times, people used to put small children to bed in the back of Renault 16s by this arrangement. Most reviews at the time these cars were new called the folding arrangements "baffling" - nowadays it looks quirky and different, and I love it!

What a sod of a job! - famously terribly difficult to work on, many R20s went off the road simply due to high garage labour quotes for routine jobs. Having spent an extremely frustrating four and a half hours changing the starter motor, I can sympathise with the mechanics who tell me that these cars are now rare for a reason!

Have a photo! I thought £40 was a reasonable price for this unit, the chap was very pleased to see the back of it, having had it on his shelves since 1991!

Bunk beds while you wait for the AA.

Now the engine is running, I thought I'd try making a video. Don't worry, it runs 10 x better now it's had a good run and fresh fuel - this is just her getting started back up after 26 years!

Thanks, I nearly killed it just before this though! I picked up the wrong can of stuff to free off the passenger door lock - I sprayed a load of brake fluid in, instead of white grease, and ended up with a healthy little blaze inside the door! Thankfully it burned itself out, with the total damage being a paint blister under the door handle, and considering all the paintwork is pretty crap, it makes little difference overall!
